Tobacco companies make about a dollar a pack, and packs now sell for 20 dollars. That's 90% to the government ffs.
There is no way the tax meets the health care expenditure. If you just take cancer for example from diagnosis options are: surgery (costly & most often a lengthy stay), chemotherapy (insanely expensive) & radiotherapy (expensive). Added to that CT scans, PET scans, x-rays. Long hospital admissions, IV antibiotic's, medications ect ect which come's all out of the government's pocket.

It appears to be true though, There are two reports by the Congressional Research Service that indicate he's right:
There's more too but i don't feel like doing anymore tedious C+P'ing.

I have a Limited Edition Aircraft Aluminum made with extra shiny polished finish Sabre Touch e-cig Mod that looks similar to the Jedi weapon and I buy my juices at Juicy Vapor.com Real cigs are a thing of the past for most people, especially internet users. It really is cost efficient too. A 3ml bottle can last days, plus the flavors are f***ing delicious. The rough part is finding what works for you, what voltage for your e-cig mod or do perfer the e-cigs that are thin like a real cig looks like, also many people don't like Juicy Vapor juices. So the trial period can get pricey but once you find what you like, it's all gravy and you have more money in your pocket. I know rolling your own cigs might even be less expensive but I've done that for years and I rather pay a little more for excellent flavors that are sweet but they all seem to still have the tobacco base flavor or you can buy just plain tobacco or menthol flavors. When and rarely do I bum a real smoke, it taste so dry and harsh.
I demand all thee smokers to switch to vaping! :p

Stu - i'm reading a book right now that deals with the kind of thing you're talking about - the absurdity of the government making laws to protect us from ourselves. it is up to the consumer to be informed and know the risks of products or activities they choose for themselves. the moment we make it the job of the government to regulate what we do to ourselves, we lose our liberty, the efficiency of our government, and the natural selection that would have otherwise weeded out people who do stupid things (think the Darwin awards...).
i myself am one of the borderline hypocritical "social smokers" ... i buy maybe 3 packs in a year and other times i feel like smoking i just ask people. i don't smoke often, but i'm not a nonsmoker. whether the packaging is blank, has pictures of a cancerous lung, or ing rainbows and unicorns, people will smoke.
the logic behind the inevitability of people smoking is the same that i believe warrants the end of drug prohibition. consensual crimes (any act that does not harm the person or property of another) are completely absurd in a free society.

But people do know the risk, and mostly (at least the smokers I have known) judge the long term cost-benefit analysis to weigh heavily against continued smoking. Yet most of them do not stop.
So, what does this phenomenon tell us about the model of people as generally rational economic actors capable of making utility-maximizing decisions for themselves without intervention?
