What about someone who's Atheist because all my bohemian peeps influenced me to be an Atheist? I am an Atheist because teen angst music made me one. I wanted to be a rebel when I was a lad, now I listen to music that no one else listens to and dress like no one else does because I am different unlike all you Xtian sheep. How come there is no mark there? This is a great epistemic kill for the theist imo.

There's no graphs for people like me. :(

I'm not trying to knock on your beliefs towards your faith on God if that is what you truly belief or are you just making a joke. I'm an Atheist whos Mom works at a Church so this puts me in a position where I do not judge people on their chosen belief. I rather look at these situations as whatever gets a person through the day. But to me and I very well might be misunderstanding you but not only in this Thread but another one you posted something similar about rich white people being Atheist and it seems to me you look at Religion in a fashion sense. I can't tell if you're taking a piss or not though.

The idea of evidence that "only applies to oneself" sounds like nonsense to me. What is the point of calling something "evidence" if you are unwilling to check it (or claim that it cannot be checked) against some sort of data that originates from outside your own skull?
The point is to validate your intuition. Which is important for growing your ego. Because it's only meant to convince yourself it's not important what outsiders think of it.

"Theism" occurs on its own so rarely that I think it is pointless to discuss it in isolation from broader belief systems. How many people believe in just "God" and in nothing else supernatural? And where do you think they got their ideas about "God" from?

This is simply not true. I have read studies in which they investigated this phenomenon amongst young people here. Less then ten percent thought of themselves as being religious. Yet over forty percent of them stated that they still believe there is "something out there". An omnipresent supernatural deity.

Your problem is that you can't separate the term "deity" from the "god" in abrahamistic religions. Religion is the full package: A single apparition of god and a book with a set of rules on which to live your life that is sanctioned by this same apparition. Theism is only an aspect, used to explain things that cannot be explained to oneself. Or to give purpose to a life which is otherwise perceived as meaningless. Whatever you want basically. This is a concept that is much older then any of the established religions we know today.

Mokay Farmer Joe, if you say so.

Seriously, good discussion. I think I am done with the god business for this fortnight.

I'm not saying that relgion is a fasion sense per se. I am looking at relgion and lack of it in a Bourdieuian way. I am also saying that religion is a symptom of cultural, and socioeconomic background. I do think that whether you quote luke or a french existentialist with an atheist perspective says somethings about where people come from. It's another way people form distinctions in every day life, and it's one way people are jockeying for position.

That's stupid. Going by that, one couldn't possibly be a gnostic theist OR a gnostic atheist, because it's impossible to know whether there is a god or not.

If anything, the problem is that it doesn't go far enough. For example, your post seems to assume a very high standard for what constitutes "knowing" whether x exists. Yet there is no widespread consensus on what constitutes knowledge. The term is simply ambiguous. Depending on how it's being used, it could either be perfectly reasonable to claim knowledge about a great many things while fully aware that the contrary is within the realm of possibility, or quite unreasonable to claim knowledge about nearly anything.

Similarly, what is this ambiguous "god" that someone is supposed to be professing some degree of belief or disbelief in? Is it some particular deity or any deity; and, if it is the latter, then what characteristics are required for something to constitute a deity? It's meaningless to profess belief or disbelief unless you adequately describe what it is that you believe or disbelieve in, and the word "god" doesn't get that job done, or even come remotely close.

That's why I find these discussions so tiresome. You wind up with everyone saying essentially nothing because they aren't expressing themselves with enough precision to effectively communicate what their thoughts actually are. Those who read and respond to posts inevitably impose their own meanings onto words that may have been intended by the writer to express some very different meaning, and the discussion--if you can even call it that--amounts to little more than a bunch of people talking past each other.
