your right if it was a rave, we would have to pay 100000$ to get in. |
i didn't know that admission costs influenced whether an event was defined as a rave or not. |

My point is that the only thing that some people still refer to as a rave in Montreal is the bell centre produkt events |

gotcha, but that's just in montreal.
the word 'rave' does't mean what it used to i guess...the definition has evolved over time... |

people call things progno even if it does not exist.
rave is a buzz word used to market now, raves like before are dead. sure you will have junglist candy kids from rave.ca throwing parties with a similar context, but it still is a lame attempt at recapturing a spirit that is essentially impossible because of how much people, society, and trends have changed so much since the 90's.
I can open up a club, call it studio 54, get Nicky siano to do the music, make it super exclusive and filled with stars and hedonism, but it still won't be studio 54 no matter how hard I would try and sell it that way. |

Yes and no. You have to live there to understand. Doesn't compare to montreal. It's not because they book good names and have some festivals that they are catching up. Considering the amount of people in those city, it's not happening all that much. Montreal as a unique configuration that makes it very alive. |

I think she means by the music coming out of there. the lee foss, droog, culprit, hot natured, Jamie jones and so on stuff. crosstown rebels has been the fad trend label of 2011, and if I'm not mistaken Damien Lazarus is based in la now.
it also helps that Montreal is much smaller and concentrated, because in LA it can be hard to hit 2 parties in 1 night without having to drive forever. I personally would like to check the daytime parties at the standard hotel. they look like a blast. |

| While we're on the subject of techno, don't forget the Droid crew out of LA... Raiz, Truncate, Silent Servant, Drumcell. They throw some big time parties as well... there's stuff going on in LA, but yea I've never been so no first hand accounts here |

Montreal gets a good share of techno bookings. I sure wish I was close to attend the blackout nights. Some wicked bookings (Alex Bau, Sanhaji, tommy four seven).
Stereo is venturing a bit now. They had Klock, now liebing. Cassy, while not really techno was there last week.
Toronto gets a lot of techno with Platform, Equaria, Breakandenter as promoters. TO also has quite a few techno locals. |

The Blkmrkt Membership parties & the Verboten parties (only 2 examples) in NYC are way more professionally run and way more consistent in quality and attendance #s than any party in Montreal.
Ppl go out to their parties because they've established themselves, regardless of the booking in question. They hear "Verboten" and automatically think quality.
I feel the opposite can be said about parties in MTL (excluding events such as BeB, BnB, and festivals like Piknic and Igloofest...these events have established themselves regardless of the bookings they have; ie: their attendance #s are consistent regardless who they book, to a certain extent).
Not as many ppl go out to Stereo simply because it's Stereo anymore. Their attendance #s depend on the booking...I believe this is the general rule, and it can be applied to not only Stereo, but Circus, and even Red-Lite I'm sure...
Maybe I'm missing something here, but it's the way I feel given the current state of the scene in MTL, and what I know from the Verboten organizers in NYC... |

greater ny has about 18 million people.
Montreal has what? 3 million?
those promoters have stellar reputations, but even if they weren't as well run attendance would still be higher than here because of the bigger demographic in which to appeal to patrons.
not to mention that new York is a much more attractive tourist destination than here for people from all over. We are essentially comparing the most important city in the free world vs one that isn't even the most important in it's own country. |
