premium soundcloud

been looking at the premium services, are they worth it in your opinion? pros / cons?

110 dollars a year, which will get me 12 hours of upload time, so like 10 sets...

spamming seems like an effective way of people looking at you, but its pretty much a sham. people will leave the most ridiculous comments there, like PHAT TRACK, wow beautiful! on the worst tracks...

going for a website approach seems better? any opinions regarding this? ive been using sharesites for my sets but they're not permanent.

also...

i wouldn't host mixes containing other people's tracks on your own website

most people don't want to download an mp3 without previewing it first

with SC you can skip around easily but depending on how you have your site set up and what browser plugins the user has installed they might have to download the entire thing before listening, nobody goes for that

Spamming will get you followers quickly, but like any community based thing if you don't put the effort in all you'll get back is e.

It's really Facebook and Youtube where you generate a following though, and the numbers there are potentially much larger than Soundcloud imo. Soundcloud is still very much a forum for 10,000 people to pat 10,000 other people on the back.

You won't magically get a huge following on SC just by being awesome though. I know several very good artists on there that get no attention at all because they don't realise you have to shout louder than the other 5 million people on there.

On the other hand take a look at Owsey's numbers on there, all of which happened when he started partaking in mass commenting.

You need to be active to gain a following (if that's what you're after) but you need to be active and ing good to launch into big numbers.

You have to corner as much of the social media you can these days. Its it worth it? Who knows, but it will help you reach a larger base of people because everyone trolls the internet differently. There are certain options that Soundcloud has that makes it a great tool ie. the whole community based concept. A website is also a must eventually, I mean you don't have to do this all at once if you are not able to. A website done well can make you look more professional and that is what you want to strive for right?

I have one but your files can't exceed 100mb so if you have a 2 hour mix you will have to upload it as 192kbps which is quality. Soundcloud you can upload it as a WAV as they only care about total time. I get way more hits on Soundcloud though.

your soundcloud seems pretty desolate :haha:

192 isnt toooooo bad on most systems.

honestly the spamming approach, when genuine people come from out of nowhere commenting on your feels much better.

That is who comments on my I don't spam hence the reason for it being desolate. I get to see what type of traffic we get from release to release. I don't whore myself out, if you like my music then you will follow. I have these things for when people want to enquire more about what I do. That page is my new venture that is just getting off of the ground. This other one is my older stuff from 5-6 years ago.

I would feel dirty if I spammed, not sure if anyone else feels this way.... or merely accepts it

But I guess it's the industry 'norm' nowadays.

I focus more on the quality of my music than on how many "Likes" or "Followers" because at the end of the day if your music is , the followers will stop listening. Quality brings and keeps the ears listening.

Soundcloud is surprisingly devoid of spam tbh, unless you partake in it yourself or happen to tag a track to attract the kind of people who are worrying about what's at the top of the Beatport chart this weekend.

Big numbers on there don't translate to sales though. Soundcloud is simply another 'must have' social media outlet that makes little difference on it's own.

I don't think "spam" has to be taken as a bad thing, though -- if you just make a conscious effort to give good feedback on people's mixes, and follow them at the same time, you'll get the attention of a decent number of people. Along with the smug satisfaction of being active with the community.

If you can't be assed to do that, then I guess you get what you get. I don't have the time personally, which is why my soundcloud is a desolate wasteland. *shrugs*
