| I think the vast majority of people using Soundcloud realize it's a place for producers to listen to other producers, it doesn't have much of an audience of just casual listeners. If that's what you want, then it does its job very well, but people bitching about not making sales through it are obviously in it for the wrong reasons. |

while i agree that you do need to use all those sites to funnel people to where they can buy music, i disagree that soundcloud has 0 social marketing potential. tons of my friends are used to soundcloud now. a lot of bands, singers etc. are using it and i've even had people mention they prefer to see a mix on facebook with a soundcloud player than anything else
|
you just proved my point. Your friends, and other people using it to push their own is not social marketing capital. You can't put soundcloud on an Ipod. And people don't like to download. Even if itunes does it. They want it simple. They want 1 place. It really is that simple. |

club go-er's who want to check out the dj thats on the bill will check out their soundcloud page, even people who are not djs and producers. ive seen it time and time again, they have a good sense of the internet though... and, it usually works for higher tier djs.
derailing this thread even further i would like to see more Street level stuff being done(other than small gigs), it seems to work well with hip-hop. i dont have any good ideas regarding this. |

your boy rory james is always handing out mix cd's at events, while i don't recommend this for people who play generally crappy music - it works for him because his cd's are genuinely enjoyable. it's really not a bad idea if you have the time and money to burn cd's and slip some networking information inside. a little old school, but meh.
so L4C, what is your all in one no work required by anyone magically buys and downloads music for them application? because to my knowledge there has to be a medium to bridge the gap from my PC to the listeners regardless of if it's soundcloud/youtube/itunes and even if they do buy through iTunes, there's a few steps involved |

thats the least any dj could do, thats a must in my eyes. maybe he could expand on this idea, but ofcourse cd duplication/sleeves/printing does cost money, depends how far you take it. |

but why ? use facebook -> itunes. Soundcloud is pointless. Host your own music on your own site. If you actually have people to sell to that will buy, do it right.
And again, you are restricting your audience once more to club goers. people that like dance span from kids to old farts.
Soundcloud is just foreign. use what people expect. Soundcloud is not one of them. Fine if you use it to stream music but thats as far as it goes in terms of marketing. Use it but if you are only using it, you are wasting your time. |

Soundcloud is definitely a community for producers and DJs.
I like the Bandcamp model a lot but it's not exactly suited for producers
not sure if you NEED to use paypal with bandcamp, but if you are that serious you're better off just creating your own label |

its not difficult to see what the proper way of doing this internet is, just take a look at how other big guys do it, its rather simple.
but moving on, does anyone have any street-level ideas? maybe i could start selling meth and include a mix tape with the purchase of every second rock. |

Right on, exactly, got hookup with some interesting and talented DJ and producers from all around the World and I'm really glad that I spent 60 US dollars on my latest upgrade.
As far as spamming, hmmm, not a problem at the moment, I do have some 3~5 requests per week for track review but you can always ignore that kind of stuff lol.
Remember you can always follow this ideology/concept "use what you can to your advantage" ether this is SoundCoud, Facebook, Youtube, KVR or anything else, it is win~win situation, you will be surprise who you can connect to.
Cheers,
Darek |

cheap digital printing? 4x6 fliers for whatever show you are playing, put small stacks in any place that will allow it (coffee shops, record stores ect)
or put posters up for the show anywhere that will allow it
have a stack of nicely made cds to give out when you play (at the very least printed labels no CDRs with black sharpie, (make sure there's a tracklist so people know what tunes are your own productions) and also hand out the cds and flier to people as they are leaving other shows (similar in sound to what you do)
do this in the right neighborhood near the venue you'll be playing at, these are all tried and true techniques, traditionally for bands but promoting any show is no different |

protip, i find business card sized flyers tend to work better as people will pocket them rather than 4x6 flyers which a lot of people will toss |
