L4C makes some good points.
Soundcloud is the Cutco/Amway of music production. The ratio of music customer to music seller is like 1:1. It might even be 0:1 haha. Just an MLM.
Hey listen to my mashup track and comment! |

| it does help to have business cards printed out to give to club owners. Like hand them a mix cd and put a card inside with all your info and a douchebaggity promo pic |

i just think people have no clue how things actually are
for one, mixes, ie 1 hour of interrupted music really is not that in demand. People prefer tracks. Radio shows that play tracks do better than one long mix. The whole dance scene is backwards and that is why out of every single genre on the planet, it is the one that sells the least proportionately. Oh but what about the dj intro. Bingo.
first off, this whole producer -> club dj - > consumer doesn't work , hasn't worked for years.
I mean it is backwards. You sell to people, which forces djs to play the tracks which makes you the person in charge, not some asshat dj. You don't need a dj friendly track. If people like it , that dj will play it. Because the djs people listen to are the onces that mc on radio shows they listen on their ipods. That is the main gate which routes people to things they are or might be interested in.
I could go on and on and on about how people in dance just don't know how to market. They are so ing bad at it. A quick glance at most producers names. I mean the fact that producers market themselves as producers and not artists is just ridiculous. You can't market a name that sounds like a ing partner at a lawfirm.
There are so many lost revenue opportunities in the dance scene it is mind boggling. This isn't just me. I was having lunch with a guy that does marketing at sony and he just laughed at the dance scene. He couldn't even put words to how silly it is. I mean there is face palm moments at every corner.
I mean just look at LMFAO. As commercial as any of the on Beatport but they don't even waste their time with beatport. It is a useless medium to sell. Sure you could, but that is how ing small beatport sales vs real sales are. It is not even comparable. Their tracks are tracks normal people can listen to, djs play them, and if you need a club mix, well they get remixed and you still make money. I just don't get it.
Beatport and Soundcloud are pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. |

| I have the 12 hours worth of music package myself, I think it's called Solo or something. Anyways, I think it's worth it. |

Some people choosing to ignore some valid points/info on this issue (not you L4B and MSZ), but everyone have to understand that there is no one silver bullet to this problem and for different people different avenues will/would work.
We here in Seattle have one of the best dance stations (C89.5) in US which support/endorse some very well-known artists/singers/group (in US or even around the World). With some good connections and your good product, they could be playing your stuff all over the air and put your stuff on the internet with thousands of people visiting per day/week.
So that would be my plan and that would/wouldn’t necessarily work for you.
Cheers,

Spamming will get you followers quickly, but like any community based thing if you don't put the effort in all you'll get back is e.
It's really Facebook and Youtube where you generate a following though, and the numbers there are potentially much larger than Soundcloud imo. Soundcloud is still very much a forum for 10,000 people to pat 10,000 other people on the back.
You won't magically get a huge following on SC just by being awesome though. I know several very good artists on there that get no attention at all because they don't realise you have to shout louder than the other 5 million people on there.
On the other hand take a look at Owsey's numbers on there, all of which happened when he started partaking in mass commenting.
You need to be active to gain a following (if that's what you're after) but you need to be active and ing good to launch into big numbers. |
Didnt owsey get featured on some blog or something? I cant imagine going from a couple hundred to thousands just by leaving comments |

So in essence you mean be an Avicii, Deadmau5, Tiesto type 'artist' brand rather than 'I'm Mike Smith and I'm a techno producer' ? |

| Armin van Buuren, David Guetta mmm a name can't be marketed effectively |

| using the exceptions as your standard is what idiots do. The first name last name format is just not as marketable as a typical band type name for so many reasons. I mean look at your screen at the top. Christian Smith with some ing 40+ year old. I mean how does this entice anyone that doesn't know who he is. The point is that marketing a producer is harder than marketing an artist. Regardless of what you do. |

i won't say you are completely wrong but they are definitely not exceptions, the fact that a brand works better, yes. But you can name yourself like you want it's not that important. |
