| Depends on what one prefers. There are clean-sounding monitoresque headphones like the higher end Sennheiser, the higher amplified sound from Beyerdynamic DT series...depends on preference. |

| Sennheiser cans are pretty great quality in general. I have a pair of HD280's, for production reasons, and they tend to last for years if you take proper care of them. I would scope out some of their stuff. |

If all you're going to listen to is trance I suppose you might as well go for closed cans with lots of bass. I have open cans and although the sound is more crisp which is fine for me since i mostly listen to ambient and electronica, I will admit trance loses a lot of it's punch on them. It rather depends on your preferences i suppose, just try some of them out rather then trying to get some meaningless audiophile sign of approval to justify your purchase. |
hmm... thanks for the advice... I can relate to the loss of punchiness and this is something I wouldn't have thought of before making the mistake of getting open cans..... I tried out my friend's Panasonic rp htf-890's which are $40 open cans that have impressed several people at head-fi.org but I now recall how little punch the they had to them....
i'm not looking for an audiophile approval for justifying my purchase but rather a specific model recommendation from someone who is more keen than I am when it comes to sound and listens to the same genre. |

My Sennheiser 650s are the best purchase I ever made. I think they were close to 400 bucks though. But worth every penny.
By the way I don't get the difference between open and closed. Are these open or closed? |

| I have 6 year old Sony MDRV700s that have been pretty nice for me for a long time. The only thing I've had to replace with them was the ear cups. |

Definitely have read good things about those. If you have the means to get those, then you might want to check out some ultrasones. Like bierheld was saying, open headphones, like the hd650, may lack some punch.
You can tell they are open because they have a grill on the outside and you can hear sounds around you even when youre listening to music, and people can hear what you're listening to, the sound is not isolated, the benefit to this is that the sound waves coming from your phones have somewhere to go, instead of bouncing and resonating inside the ear cup, this allows for much more natural sound reproduction and much wider soundstage...like some instruments are farther away...youre more surrounded b the sound..etc.
The best of both worlds may be the ultrasones with s logic technology which places the sound cones off center and not directly pointing into your ear. I have yet to try it myself but I look forward to buying a pair that's around $150 or 200.
Also, im willing to bet that you arent hearing close to the full potential of your headphones if you aren't using a powerful / good amplifier. Decent amplifiers can be had for like $60.... Check out the fiio e11 or if you want more portable, the e6 is supposed to be a good performer for the price as well. |

Hmm. Just found this thread where someone called the mdr600s the worst ones hes heard..go figure haha.. By the way headphones are known to sound better and better with time and proper burn in

Also I think it's worth mentioning that there is gonna be a maybe small difference between the headphones you want to listen to and enjoy trance all the time and the ones you'd want to record and mix with. It's all about sound signature and level of detail in mid lows and highs |

I'm actually not really shure. I have a decent (50$) soundcard and I think around 200-250$ CD receiver which I use. I'm not shure how much better an headphone amp sounds but I might try one.
Any other recommendations for amps? Is there a difference in sound quality between the e6 and e11? |

That shouldn't be bad. Not sure if those amps will be much of an upgrade if at all. It' would be if you're mainly using an iPod or smartphone as your mp3 player. There isnt that much difference betweethe e6 and 11. But maybe worth the extra $35 for the 11. |

Man, and I thought I was a headphone whore.:p

If you're using the Senn 650s for your computer, then you absolutely must get yourself an amp/DAC combo for those babies to truly come alive. The receiver should work fine as an amp, but the DAC helps eliminate that nasty digital 'flatness' that's always a byproduct of digital sources.
I personally got this - HeadRoom Micro Amp + Micro DAC Package - but you may just want the Micro DAC in that case.
Regarding the e6/11s, as far as a I know, they simply make the volume louder on your source (re: save you a few volume digits on your player). They're adequate if you're just using them for portables and low/mid-priced cans, but if you want to get something for home use, you're gonna have to spring some extra coinage. Hey, no one said being a proper audiophile was ever going to be cheap. :happy2: |

MDR600 is not the same as MDRV700 |

| I don't know if anyone's said it yet, but I will listen to trance only on my Beats. |
