| But I paid $300 for them. That must mean they are the absolute best. |

If you're using the Senn 650s for your computer, then you absolutely must get yourself an amp/DAC combo for those babies to truly come alive. The receiver should work fine as an amp, but the DAC helps eliminate that nasty digital 'flatness' that's always a byproduct of digital sources.
I personally got this - HeadRoom Micro Amp + Micro DAC Package - but you may just want the Micro DAC in that case.
Regarding the e6/11s, as far as a I know, they simply make the volume louder on your source (re: save you a few volume digits on your player). They're adequate if you're just using them for portables and low/mid-priced cans, but if you want to get something for home use, you're gonna have to spring some extra coinage. Hey, no one said being a proper audiophile was ever going to be cheap. :happy2: |
finally, someone who has a clue what they're talking about.
BTW, Woony, if you have the means, get a good amp. I've read you'll want to spend at least $125 for one that is decent. I tested out the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium (250ohm) today at Guitar Center. I was floored by it after testing the DT 770 and the Sennheiser HD380Pro. Granted, it's almost $150 more, but many reviewers have compared it directly to the Sennheiser HD650 which you have. They say they're almost exactly level with each other...with maybe the HD650 edging out the 880. Also, the DT880 is a semi-open back headphone, while the HD650 is a fully open can. All I gotta say, is you're lucky to have those headphones..... I do believe these are ideal for trance (maybe you just happened to pick the HD650 when you bought them). I'll let you know if I find anything better (which I'm sure exists), but the trick for me will be to find something as close to it, but for around the $150 mark. I may end up getting Ultrasones that have similar sound signature to the DT880/HD650.
The DT770s were definitely more for a basshead. The bass overpowered and muddied up the mids and highs a bit--not too badly, however.
Sykonee, thanks for the tip on the fiio e6/e11. I'll only get it if i need more volume. The DT880 (250ohm) definitely needed amplification for my smartphone. It was fine with my iPad. I might just get the 32ohm version when I end up getting it in the future.
Do you know any other cheaper headphones that are comparable to the DT880? Thanks :) |

| the plastic in the beats by dre is actually some advanced stuff, i saw the development of it. they engineered the material so well it actually helps with the acoustics. anyone who talks about beats by dre doesnt have a clue, keep dreaming your head-fi.org fantasies. the people there think they're entitled to some imaginary because they fork over 1000 dollars. |

Actually, I have the 580s. Got 'em 7 years ago when Sennheiser was clearing them out. For the longest time, those were considered the audiophile standard (in the $400-$600 range). Obviously, headphone technology's advanced since then, but I have yet the need to spring for a newer Senn home model, much less try out any other brand for comparison.
(...although, that bass rattle in my left can is getting worse lately.:whip: ) |

Digital to Analog sound? I've never heard of that. What is this sorcery? :p
300$ is pretty steep though, are there any acceptable ones around 150-200$? |

Get the EMU 0404 soundcard (roughly 200€). It's not the best, but it can drive the Sennheiser HD 650 pretty well. That's, at least, what I'm using in conjunction with my 650.
I'm thinking about getting an Audiotailor Jade amp sometime soon, but seriously man, using the 650 with a 50€ soundcard is an abomination.
650 have a pretty large spectrum of usage and can utilize most "pro" equipment before the headphones need an upgrade for the equipment, so to speak. A lot about sound is the perfect balance, which requires a long time to find. There are people spending 600€ for HD 650 cables just because of that minor difference.
My suggestion is to go to a store (taken as you live in Berlin, there should be some) that let you test out different gear. Burn some tracks and see how the different stuff feel.
Quite frankly all this "what is best" is a bit vain. We all have different preferences, for different types of music and so forth. |

OT: The people that suggest the Dre cans can go themselves. |
As I've said I use a decent CD receiver (over 600 bucks with speakers) as amp. For a long time I used an onboard soundcard and I've gotten a dedicated soundcard (50$, but still) with my new computer recently but I don't hear any difference. |

thanks for the input. I tend to keep my equalizer flat. would the 650's still need much better ampflication than something cheap, say 50-150? |
