Tip was a hoax

Media rules the world. They show it and we jump.

that percentage bull! I tip whether or not the person waiting on me did a good job or not. I'll be damned if I leave a tip just because you're supposed to leave 20%.

It's like arguing with someone in a wheelchair. Oh don't do that he's in a wheelchair! I don't give a ! If he's an , I'm going to tell him he's a ing and wheel the out of here! Same for tips, bitch. You suck at your job, you don't get more money! me If I'm going to give some slob my hard earned cash for being a lazy bum with terrible work ethic. Take a little pride in your work and you get moneys.

The moment I have to conjure a server is the second their tip disappears! Only bathroom sex gets tips back. If it's a male well they're out of luck!

It's very rare that I get "bad" service, especially at nicer restaurants, in the US.

You can't compare the lower end restaurants with the higher end restaurants. Places like PF Changs and Olive Garden, make service look like a formality, one where you know they are just doing it to ensure that you tip well. Seriously, it almost always seems as if the only training that the staff at such places receives is instructions to "smile, say sir/maam and check once after serving whether the patrons are enjoying their meal."

In contrast, most high end places that I have eaten at make service look like an art form, one where the staff genuinely seem concerned that every single detail of your meal is perfect.

Even though the average tip amounts are considerably higher, I highly doubt that the staff at "$$$" & "$$$$" restaurants are paid minimum wage.

Fake.

Huffington Post, etc.

Indeed, but why would anyone fake that? :conf:

That's got to be one of the most pointless hoaxes I've ever seen...

With so much real stuff to be fixed out there in this regard, someone actually felt the need to spread lies!?

It's the only way to get the media's attention these days.

Sensationalize something and you're golden.

EDIT: And the media blames the consumers for buying it.

Right now, the general consensus towards the rich, especially those in the banking industry, is pretty hostile so it seems perfectly plausible that someone looking to further his or her agenda against this particular segment conjure up such a scheme so that even more animosity is heaped against the banking industry.

I really can't think of any other reason as this stunt could have been pulled against anyone from any background. This part of the article cemented my belief:

quote:
Mention the “99%” in my boss’ presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness. Oh, and he always makes sure to include a “tip” of his own.

A whole lot of servers don't try any harder just because they want a bigger tip. I work in the industry and the vast majority of them *expect* a good tip whether they're any good at their jobs or not.

Obviously there are diamonds in the rough at any place. Also, as you enter more expensive, nicer restaurants, the hiring process is more stringent and service improves. But tipping in and of itself is not a reliable motivator for improved service.

Yep - and this particular phenomena further convulates the "percentage" norm for tipping.

I've eaten at places where my bill came to less than 10 bucks per person where I received far superior service than places where we racked up a bill of over $50 per person with the same number of people.

If you go by the law of percentages, a 10% tip at the later would be greater than a 50% tip at the former, but because we are trained to think in percentages of the bill amount, a $3 tip for the former will be too much while a $5 tip for the latter will be too little. So we are more likely to leave a $2 tip for the cheaper place and a $10 tip for the more expensive place, even though the cheaper place was more deserving of the $10 tip, but then that would be 100% of the bill amount.

tipping right in the arse. i dont know what it is about hospitality but for some reason they think their workers are special when compared to workers from other industries. its not my job to subsidise the wages of employees.

Did you know that you are entirely incorrect? Tip meaning a gratuity is derived from the 17th century use of the word tip meaning to give or to hand, which in turn came from a german word that meant to tap.

Logically "totally impromptu service" makes no sense as the service is being offered regularly and in a wholey expected manner... not the product of spontaneous improvisation as the term impromptu would suggest. Moreover, the term "tip" for a gratuity has been in use since the 1700s whereas the term impromptu didn't exist until 1817 and then was exclusively used to describe music for a hundred or so years.

:stongue: awesome.
