Not familiar with SO. Reaper's FX are pretty basic 'looking'. But they are incredibly powerful. Reacomp is easily on par with Waves stuff from what a lot of the Reaper board guys that have both say. Not better, just up there quality wise. The EQ, Gate and other core fx are pretty good too. A lot of the JS fx are specialized but great at their niches.

If you want a loaded DAW with big synths etc, then there are better choices for sure. But if you have a vst library already than it's worth a look. If you strip the FX and just judge it as a DAW, it's just as 'pro' as logic/PT etc.

But no, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Thanks man, nice to have your view on it, will also check OS out to make some form of comparison between three of them, appreciate.

If I'd have had the cash to spare at the time I'd probably have gone with Sonar or Reason, but I don't regret Reaper. Definitely got my $60 worth from the learning experience alone.

But by the sounds of it, you'd be happier with the other one since Reaper can't offer those things yet.

The DAW does look pretty good and cheap too, and it also looks cheap too.

Call me superficial, but I like the look of Studio One more.

The things I like so far about studio one:

EQ is integrated with a very nice spectral analyzer. This is a big plus when Ableton doesn't come with one and I had to put an analyzer on every channel.

Automation works flawlessly

Can edit automation in the piano roll

Can view two midi files in the piano roll at once(god send for writing multitimbral chord progressions)

Things I do not like:

Recording automation, setting up side chains, and a few other things take longer to do

I was thinking versus Reaper.

But speaking of Ableton effects, a lot of them are kind of which is obvious when you consider that the DAW is designed to be run during a live performance where stability and low CPU are important.

Not to mention that a lot of the presets are not usable at all, unless you want some out of the way sound.

The sidechain compression is good because you can filter out the frequencies you don't want from the key.

You put EQ3 on a channel and it'll start changing the sound.

EQ8 has left/right mode plus scaling which is really nice. But its the same generic parametric EQ you'll find in every other DAW.

Ableton really needs an IR reverb, something like what Logic has would be ideal.

Yup.

Well that would be my choice. always thought it had the most automation/midi features of all the DAWs and the audio section is also much better than it used to, Not sure if they allow free routing yet. Haven't used it in a while but i'om pretty sure they do.

The best way I can describe Reaper is that it's an all purpose tool that is best at live recording but great to route bizzarre combos. It does automation well and will get you set for about any general thing you want. But if you want specific things, there may be better choices. Heavy midi is doable but Cubase is said to be superior. If you like tweaking settings/layouts then it's tops.

I'm probably going to get Reason shortly and rewire them, but if I never bought another DAW, that would be OK. It does everything I've needed so far.

But bottom line, for $60 you can't go far wrong.

What do you mean by automation delay? It's crashing Ableton?

There's a problem with the engine that doesn't compensate for automation with 3rd party plug-ins.

So take something like Sylenth1, automate the filter, render it, then look at where the filtering occurs.

Murders?

Have you even sat down with Reaper?

The fact that its free as a trial.. Uncrippled trial, should let you know their perspective on the DAW world, and they really put them to shame.

Pro-tools is a like a pretty b!tch who dont clean, cook, or suck ya dick.
Its really that bad! LOL

While Reeaper just that sexy hood ride or die joint. nah mean!

Man I sat there and waited for Pro-Tools to open up for the last time in a long time 2 nites ago. Just to restricting man.

I have no problem with you loving pro-tools.

It just so happens to be Reaper killed MY pro-tools. I know quick keys, quick edits and all in PT I'll use it when neccessary. But I will never use it in the comfort of my own home.

The fact I can now work on my projects anywhere. anytime. Just nullifies pro-tools in my book.

Why pay 150 for an upgrade. 209 for a m-box micro. who knows how much for an HD rig. and sit there and spend all sorts of money with one company.

When I get most of that with the "FREE" Reaper. I can spend my money on Spectronics, Keyboards, Mics you get the picture?

Funk Pro-Tools it aint the end all be all, and everybody knows it.
