Messing around with Reaper tonight...

Installation was a 3 minute affair, you can't really say that with any other DAW. There's no ty onboard synth/instruments...

I'm just trying to get my head around the basic functions I'll need so nothing particular sticks out to me at the moment. But considering what Ableton doesn't have there's a lot of "new" stuff like adjustable windows and customizable key commands.

The one thing that bugged me is that there is no duplicate command, but otherwise the audio editing is more feature rich than ableton.

The crossfading feature works like a charm, so splicing two kicks together is really easy.

The one unique feature was being able to drag a parameter with alt, and then once you let go of the mouse it goes back to its original position. That's pretty cool to A/B two settings really quickly.

Maybe none of this is new...

logic has some pretty bad shortcommings, In particular midi. Which i think is ironic because everyone things midi is logic's forte. And yes, i know how to use the environment better than you. You can't actually generate a midi signal with tools that work rather well with other daws. For example, CableGuys have this great midi generator tool and it is a bitch to use in logic because of how logic treats midi as like this being that can only be generated from outside or what you have told it to do explicitly. But to do time based midi manipulation in logic is a nightmare. And this is why EDM people use ableton,

Say i wanted a midi signal that is a sine wave with a certain frequency, well with logic, you have to draw it out. What a pain in the ass.

With Ableton you could duplicate samples instead of having to control drag samples over the space you want them.
meriter
yo dawg what about Digital Performer?

Looney4Clooney
only people that use it are guys for film/tv. The features that might make it attractive don't translate to EDM.

That's pretty surprising. I've been using it regularly for months now and it's only crashed on me a few times, each of which occurred when inserting dodgy plugins (e.g., bridged plugins, heavy CPU users) into projects with pretty heavy track/plugin counts. Based on the infrequent number of crash reports on their forum and my own experience, stability is generally not an issue for S1v2.
