[REVIEW] Electric Zoo 2012 (pg. 7)

Great great posts guys.

Everybody hit the nail on the head.

I started going "clubbing" in 2002 when i was 18/19 and I was never ever disrespectful like these kids are now. It was always music first, always having a good and responsible time. No bs no drama.

Also, this is not just us saying the exact same things.
I've seen peoples posts on facebook talking about the kids and how they were out of control.

What would be awesome is Ezoo/Sunday School Groove to be 2 separate festivals on the same dates where you could access both with one band, except sunday school would be 21+

A bit redundant considering the only crowd that comes into Sunday School is 21+ anyway haha.. It was like, completely segregated most of the time haha..

Indeed it was until Boys Noize went on.

Perhaps it's time for the "adult experience"... maybe there's a market for aging ravers who want to go to festivals. Back in my day...

I would say that maybe we're the partypoopers, getting old and what not......

But we're not!!!! This generation goes to all these overpriced 3-4 hour parties/concerts, while we're at Blk Market for 10-16 hours. The Avicii show at Radio City, the Swedish House Mafia MEGASPECTACULAR at MSG that lasted all of 3 hours. These aren't "crazy" parties. Unfortunately, their lack of expectations as a collective fanbase is lowering the standards/bar, jacking up the prices tenfold, ting on the quality.

In this type of climate, why WOULD someone like Armin even WANT to go play a 6+ hour set somewhere when he can get paid $150,000 to play for one?? And the kids are eating all this up. Us complaining about a lot of 14 year olds wearing neon is more about all the residual that came with this shift, and less about their neon. It's just the only thing we have to identify them.

<3 u man. here's some paraphrased thoughts i posted in an EDM group on facebook:

personally, i dont understand how anyone WANTS to produce this stuff. it all sounds the same. same sounds, beats, melodic structure. of course, i am overgeneralizing. i made a post further down the page with someone's review of electric zoo. [i posted a screenshot of your comments, StrobeLifeNYC] a lot of people thought it was commentary on the "kids" in the scene, but it was more of a statement in the general lowwww standard of music that's being put out. i don't think anyone would have a problem with this new wave of "ragers" and neon and nu-kandi kids if they were actually listening to at least semi-good music. hell, i'll be the first to admit that when i got into dance music i was listening to some pretty cheesy stuff, but damn son, it was a million times better produced than this cookie cutter supersaw EDM that is at the forefront of all these festivals and big events. i'm sure almost everyone reading this is calling me a hater, but i'm a realist. it's just BAD, guys. come on. i get that a lot of you are relatively new to the scene and like all the high-energy, culture and crowd interaction and whatnot, but there's TONS of quality, thoughtfully produced music in ALL genres that bangs and can make you lose your mind. i think with the last ezoo, a lot of even hardcore EDM fans realized that it's way too similar. been seeing a lot of joke talk in this group about Levels and skrillex and whatnot from people that still like djs that play what is essentially the same stuff. i don't know if it's different somehow because a different dj (different personality, stage setup, marketing theme) is playing it or what, but i don't get it.

Read this. I think it speaks to why a lot of music has become so watered down and crappy. I appreciate Markus' honesty.

Makes sense I guess.

you know all of this disdain that people have been vocalizing, I honestly haven't seen it in the scene I've been in recently, still EDM maybe not trance but it has an awfully familiar feeling to the beginnings of trance from the GBDJ of Miami days, to the Ultra 2001-2005 days.

the obvious thing here is that evolution is happening and as an individual we all need to grow a bit even if it's out of our comfort zone or to listen to something you aren't USED TO listening to or to be in a crowd that is way older then you. Your taste will change, taste in clothes, taste in music, taste in women/men, wouldn't it be quite boring to continue to have the same thing over and over again?

with that being said, FINGER HEARTS!

I ended up reading the entire thread on the MS forum... interesting read straight through if you had the time. There is also apparently another TA thread in regards to that thread...

Anywho, I thought this was another interesting post:

After hearing the album all the way through, out of 23 tracks, I can say that I enjoyed 9 of them. My favorite tracks are definitely Soul Seeking and Nothing Without Me, but Universe is Mine and Love Rain Down are probably my two least favorite tracks. Still not a fan of Adina's voice, and I think Carry On and Scream will have to grow on me as I'm not crazy about them now, but I can see the appeal during a live set I guess, similar to how Caught can be a goosebumps moment when hearing it live, but nowhere close when listening on GDJB.

Meanwhile, Markus' Scream Tour stop in NYC was a mixed bag I think. I blame the majority of the negativity on Made Event/Markus' management for the terrible idea of combining the Scream release event with the after-party from Electric Zoo because the atmosphere was AWFUL! The majority of the crowd were stoned out of their minds and the floor was full of obnoxious bros who pushed and shoved to get around in a crowded dance floor. While standing in line, I heard a number of people ask "Who the is Markus Schulz and who is KhoMha? Do they play Dubstep?" even heard someone say "I don't know, but I've heard some good rappers I haven't heard of before when I'm here, I hope its something like that!" After they spent the day partying with Steve Aoki and DJ BL3ND at EZoo, it didn't surprise me that they didn't seem to receive Markus' set very well. It felt like it never really got going as any time we'd advance towards the rabbit hole, Markus would have to loop back around and play some more big hits to keep them interested. Plus, when he played Love Rain Down and Caught, the vocalists came out on stage and it felt very awkward (especially during Love Rain Down) since the crowd didn't seem to me to be thrilled about them at any point other than when they say "Make some noise NYC! Scream!!" The only time they went nuts was when Markus played a remix of Promises and Porter Robinson's Language...Not to mention after his set there was a group chanting "DUBSTEP! DUBSTEP!" as he came down to meet with the fans. -- Maybe it's just me, and someone else who was there may have had a more positive experience, but I just wanted to get this out there in case Markus gets the chance to see it so hopefully it can be discussed for future events.

With all of that aside, I still managed to enjoy spending the night with some fellow Coldharbour Citizens and seeing familiar faces. Markus was a great sport and it was great to catch up with him and KhoMha again briefly after the show. It was also nice to see Grube & Hovsepian and Arnej hanging around, seemed like the Coldharbour family was in town. I am really hoping the Scream Tour makes a stop here in DC so I can get a proper taste of how it's supposed to be because I heard Miami was a night to remember.

I believe this to be further proof why the EDM scene has outgrown us... not vice versa.

That's very weird, not the experience I had at that event at all. I thought the crowd was fine, lots of familiar faces and I met some cool kids. There were some bros in the crowd for sure but no one particularly offensive that I noticed.

The live vocals were a little awkward, esp because Adina Butar was lip syncing haha.

And yeah, it is a good read. It's very obvious that Markus feels a lot of pressure to keep his place at the top and I hope he is able to find balance and stay true to himself and his sound.
