In otherwords, does anyone know how to convert DVD videos onto my computer with 3 easy steps? I've been dying to learn.

Do you have any experience with the aforementioned soundwave amplification systems? Be it tangible, or mere frivolous. If so, please chime in. If not, stfu. I'm talking to you jay el.

So I went to the music store today. Had a listen to both sets of monitors. The Yamahas had a more transparent sound with more pronounced mids, I'd imagine I'd get pretty tired listening to them for 4+ hours a day. The Mackies had a much fuller and nicer sound, somewhat softer, so I ended up leaving the store with them. :) Thanks for the help guy(s).

my view not withstanding a horrid system that actually distorts output in a nonlinear way, you can achieve a great mix with pretty much anything. People don't know their speakers and saying that it is an axiom is not true at least here. if you know how it should sound, then you know how it shouldn't sound. And your ears and brain can translate.

How are you liking your Mackie's Alfi? Send me over a mix :)

Breaking them in still, so the bass is a little bit floppy still, but they have a very nice sound to them. Can't wait to get my desk though, as they're just on top of another set of speakers now, or the hillbilly stands, as i have come to refer them as. something is wrong with the last part of that sentence but i can't figure out what..
mix is on the way. what kind do you want? -tape or -down, or a combo? :o

I could have sworn you were using Genelec's.

Yeah, I have been, but they're too tiny so they lack some bass, and honestly it's like producing on like a ing dentist chair. The sound is too clinical if you get me. The Mackies are for idea->mixdown, then the lec's for referencing.:gsmile:

All that counts is that you're happy with them, but.....

........Unfortunately, listening to the Yama's in a store is less than Ideal. Unless you got really lucky and they had them set up in a good sized room, away from all the walls and ceiling, properly mounted, etc, then some other speakers (especially mackies IMO) may sound better better due to their hifi-like coloration of mid and lower mid frequencies.

Yes, you can do a mix on most speakers, but whet everyone seems to be missing are several points:

1, understand the concept that if you can't hear detail, you brain cannot "infer it". You can only guess with that limitation and that will result in mistakes or inaccuracies in your finished product.

2, While any good engineer can work and use their skill to make translation fluid, it's still a translation and obviously therefore not a direct assimilation of what you;re hearing and trying to create.

For instance, why do you think mix (1st) engineers have mix assistants? Because 1st engineers are meant to primarily do creative part of it, not the technical details as it takes away from the creative process. Having to translate, while not really difficult and there's always a tiny bit of consideration depending on the finished medium, should not be something you have to do constantly or a lot of on every mix because your speakers are just not up to it.

3, The point is to have speakers that accurately represent what you;re hearing and allow you to mix to the point it will sound good across multiple platforms as effortlessly as possible.

While I truly appreciate the "learn your speakers" adage, all other being equal, your speakers should offer you the most efficient route to do that, and that means getting the best speakers you can for the job (and not KRK's :p )

Why are you telling me this now and not two days ago, before I went to the store? :P

That's not even remotely relevant to any caricature that could be made of him. If anything, you could have chosen something vaguely related to a know it all (when in fact it's really just knowledge).

Your trolling skills suck.

Here's one of you.
