Yamaha HS80M or Mackie MR8mk2?

Same price. The mackies are on sale, about $200 less than normal. Which one is the best? lol

I owned a pair of Mackie MR5 for a year, and then I owned a pair of Yamaha HS80ms for a year. I currently own a pair of Rokit KRK R6s.

Out of the three of the speakers I've owned, by far the worst pair was the Mackies. They just never sounded right, and I swear some bass notes where an entire half semi-tone off.

The Yamaha HS80ms are great speakers. However, you really need to listen to them before you buy. I bought them because everyone seems to love them, but I found I personally didn't love them at all. I would say they are very flat across 250-20,000hz. They've got the same amount of detail as loud speakers and give you a great idea of what the audio will sound like on any system. On the negative side, and the reason I sold them, 20-250hz is pretty much inaudible. You will not hear sub bass. Also, my main issue with them is transient response. While they have the same transient response as other loud speakers, I found it wasn't accurate enough for producing. Like, even after having owned them for an entire year, every kick drum sounds almost exactly the same in the monitors from my experience.

I personally like the KRK R6s best. On the positive side, they have a great transient response, more detail than the yamahas, and you can actually hear sub bass very well. On the negative side, you just downright can't trust them in terms of balancing your mix. You will always be second guessing yourself as to whether or not you actually mixed the sub bass, bass, mid range and treble correctly.

EDIT: also, I found yamahas sound great when filling the room with sound. Like you don't really need to position the yamahas perfectly in order to get a good reproduction of the audio. On the other hand, the KRKs seem much more picky. They will fill a room with sound, but there are definitely sweet spots. For example, if your ear is below the tweeter, it almost sounds as if a piece of paper is over your ears. Above the tweeter/at the level of the tweeter (at level is correct position fyi), and it sounds prefect though

Anyways, choice is yours. I strongly suggest staying away from mackie though. They just don't sound right at all to my ears.

that guy owned crappy mackies, but i have a friend with releases on bedrock who owns the mr5s so..... it always depends on the listener

as for them being a half tone off on the bass.... well... you must have had a defective pair or your room is very wonky

i have the 824 mk2s and they are great for where im at now. they sound great for mixing at low ish volume (where they shine really) but can still boom whith a lot of clarity which is fun for jamming

eventually ill want the 4000$ adams but thats just not possible right now

i am very happy with mine.. i upgraded from the event tr5 and it was like night and day. from what ive heard with my own ears id never by a krk rokit product. maybe their other lines are better but I'm not a fan of the rockit series for production.

i think yamahas have a decent sound but i have no experience on them nor have i read anything. i have a couple of mates with them tho and they do ok so they can't be bad

i doubt i had a defective pair. i'm just very sensitive to my speakers

agree with you though. i would ideally want to buy a $3,000-$6,000 pair of speakers.

if your monitor of choice is the rockit i highly doubt that as they are some of the tinniest fatiguing monitors ive used in recent memory, the highs are intolerable after a while

theres just no way a speaker like that would change the bass a semitone

Whatever kids.

Whine all you want.

you built them up just to destroy them

why on earth would anyone want speakers they can't trust at all?

sorry that i'm the only person here who's realistic. no speakers under $1,000.00 are great.
