Sounds messy. They must have edited that scene out of the version I saw. What you've described is also the most obvious way to write a pirate as a good guy, ever, and doesn't really contain the gloriously tipsy essence of Johnny Depp's performance that makes the character so enjoyable.

I clicked post to early as I was going to illustrate further (hence the comma).

Are you ing joking? "gloriously tipsy"?

How about utterly e and annoying?

He inconsistently minces about whole film with a terrible mix of faux english accents lifted his English rock star friends, which si weird as he can pull off specific english accents when he needs to.

Hi "tipsy" performance was abhorrent and one of things that ruined the film for me. I expected more taste from you.

EDIT: I can understand the ire from a fan of something cult-ish that has been turned into something mega-bucks, but my point still stands. You can't gleefully steal from everything and then whine when someone does it back to you. I see it more of a case of typical postmodernist referential dialogue, the way remakes, reboots and sequels of iconic stuff start referencing things that referenced them, creating a framework of knowing in-jokes and winks to the camera.

Not a cult fan thing. I worked on POTC (more than one of them to be exact).

It was known thing to those involved that it was lifted. Not an Homage, not a wink to the camera, not an in joke. It was MI on film. They used the artwork, script and story writers from the game.

I do agree that you'll never make a cult game translate on to the big screen in the form a of a giant big budget blockbuster, and therefore whenever you approach these things there are referential statements that will always be made, intended or not, but with everything I have posted, with all the informaiton out there, the fact you can transpose audio from MI on to POTC video...it's a rip of a previous and well defined work, not an artistic re imagining of a classic story.

I feel MI is based on On Stranger Tides for some of the storylines, which POTC just ran with.

The films are absolute fodder that degenerate into modern Hollywood gigantomania as the iterations rack up, and watching Depp chow down on the scenery throughout is their one redeeming feature.

Actually, well said - that's a fair way to look at it.

I have no idea what Monkey Island or Pirates of the Caribbean have anything to do with Star Wars. Must be more of that studio humor. :conf:

I'm gonna go get the papers get the papers.

Must be. If you can't understand it, just put it down to that. It'l be fine.

WAT?

It's a ing pirate story. You could say there are themes in every genre that have been repeated ad nauseum in modern story telling since the Greek tragedies , but you'd have to be a fool to try to claim POTC was not a direct lift of Monkey Island.

Spielberg was an admitted fan of MI and was going to direct the film until it got canned and he was the one that hired script writer Ted elliot from MI.

http://www.worldofmi.com/comments.p...259&action=read

POTC plot elements are copies of MI: ghost pirates, voodoo ladies, smart-ass main characters, the heroine is the governors daughter, davy jones and lechuck both had tragic romances, set in the carribean.

, there are even direct storyline and character lifts:

The dog with the key in the jail, CMI's intro w/Guybrush floating into the middle of a ship/fort battle, Herman Toothrot is Ben Gunn, Will and Jack make up Guybrush, Barbossa and Davy Jones are LeChuck (One is in control of undead pirates and plunders the Caribbean and abducts a young woman, using a deserted, cursed, and almost impossible to find island as a base of operations, while the other is known as the devil of the seas and kills and destroys due to his own love for another woman). Ghost pirates? Vodoo? The only pirate story to ever have that was the book I mentioned.

I mean, you'd have to be pretty dumb or in complete denial to blatantly avoid the "similarities".

Again, To all of a sudden yell out bloody murder at Pirates of the Caribbean "ripping off" Monkey Island shows an infantile understanding of the genre.

No, it's not. I'm pretty sure I know viking lore better than you, and there are no flying viking ships.

The characters in POTC were ripped, by the same script and storyline writer from MI. There's just too many crossovers. Watch that video I posted - that audio is the opening segment of MI and they've been able to ADR against exact lines in the film, by those same characters.

They synced up ONE line, and it was "I want to be a pirate"
ing look at the video you've posted before claiming it backsup all your statements. It's as relevant to the discussion as any other movie trailer mashup.

You're right about the influences, but I can complain.

Yeah but yur just gonna come across as a butthurt loser. It's not like you had anything to do with the creation of the game, was it?

There are simply some lengths he will never resort to".

They split Guybrush in to two people

No they didnt. It's just in your, and a select few others', head.
