Parenting and Santa Claus

i was recently having a discussion about not wanting to raise my kids believing in santa claus. i would tell them the truth but ask them not to tell their friends about santa not being real.

i was asked why that would matter, and why i would condone other parents lying to their children.

my take is that if someone wants their kids to be raised with santa claus as a part of their christmas tradition, it's not fair for me to ruin that for them.

i know at least some of you have kids, so i would be interested to know: santa claus or no santa claus? why or why not?

Discovering that Santa clause isn't real is a great life lesson. People lie. So yes, I will take part in the conspiracy and when they find outthe truth, I will give them a bag of crystal meth and ask them ithem what else they have beentoldthat isn't true.

If your kids are bright they should figure out early on that Santa isn't real.

I don't think it's about Santa as much as it's about the magic of childhood. I think it's pretty ing cruel to be brutally honest with kids about stuff, like Santa, that is so inconsequential/harmless. Kids aren't dumb, they figure it out on their own and understand the point of it..only truly stupid kids find out the truth and feel "lied to". For 's sake. I mean really? Is nothing sacred?

They're getting presents either way, why the would they care where they came from? I don't remember when I stopped believing in Santa, but that's probably because I didn't care all that much.

That being said, Santa is a fun idea when you're little, so if you're choosing to deprive your kids from that, then you're a miserable cunt.

It's a nice joke too even after you've told them the truth. Sometimes my Dad will still break out his laptop and be like "look kids, NORAD shows Santa being tracked over Minsk right now!"

Santa still leaves a card for me with money in it in the Christmas tree every year!

I made this mistake. When Rowan was 3 she asked me if Santa was real and I told her 'no, but the spirit of Christmas is'. I thought I was doing her a solid but then holiday kid stuff stopped being fun for her. Eli and I realised that we robbed her of that fun part of her childhood, and spent the next two Christmases making it up to her stringing her along with some sort of bull magical lies about Santa and elves etc. she loves it. I'm pretty sure deep down she knows it's not true but she goes along with it and Christmas is her favourite time of the year now. I don't remember when I learned Santa wasn't real so obviously it wasn't that traumatising.
