| you won't ever listen a 90's set in an arena with thousands of people but some famous djs run classic nights and ofcourse locals. The problems at least in my city and other cities in spain is that classic nights are mostly eurodance, spanish hard house and maybe some excesively overplayed trance like AvB - Communication, Gouryella , System F and that kind of happy peak time stuff. |

it seems in a bid to 'stay fresh' i.e. some sort of trend setter, they compromise on quality, wanting to play a record just because it is brand new. you can point to sven vath for this.
there's no shame in mining older tracks - it doesn't have to be 'big tunes' - and there will be many older tracks that the dj himself has missed, and never even heard of - they should be on the look out for good music full stop. the age of it shouldn't even come into question. they can and use bridge gap tunes and the eq to make them fit - that's a dj's job after all.
the attitude is slightly elitist, like they are above old stuff, or they will lose their edge if they play it. bs to that, the best thing about dance music is you could never discover it all. i find it more exciting to find an older track that must have done the rounds, yet i have never heard of it, than to simply pick the best of the current crop... what if the current crop is ?! |

Eh, don't take this the wrong way but I think you're reaching. I can also understand if you don't like Sven's taste or selection in music, for example, but the guy still plays Jaguar, which is about 13 years old at this point. |

Classics sets are pretty common in the UK, even by DJs who still play out, and not just by trance DJs. In recent times I've seen:
808 State
Jon Carter
The Freestylers
CJ Bolland
Quivver
Mick Park (of Tilt)
Man With No Name
Dave Seaman
Justin Robertson
Ian Ossia
Airwave
Oliver Lieb
Gwill Morris
Going to add Hybrid, John 00 Fleming, Paul Bleasdale and Graeme Park to that list in a couple of weeks.
I think the obvious ones would be Sasha and Digweed, but they won't do them. Even at the Renaissance 20th birthday party, Sasha would only play two classics, both from the original Mix Collection. |
What were Oliver Lieb and Quivver like?
Also please let us know what Graeme Park is like. |

http://www.mixcloud.com/OliverLieb/...-no-2012-03-17/ for the set he played here in Bergen last year. The audio quality is since it's a mic recording. Can't say I've heard of many of the tracks he played, but I danced my socks off with no other toxics than alcohol. It might be me being seriously deprived of good clubnights, but this was my top clubbing experience of the year. |

oh wow. this is what i'm talking about. too much caring what the crowd thinks.
it's either a well known classic (for recognition), or brand new tunes (to appear cutting edge)
what about the tons of older tunes of that aren't well known? many of them are far superior to the ones labelled 'classics', but never became 'famous' for whatever reason. |

meh i still hear DJ's drop classics in sets. just depends on the DJ and the evening.
I've heard Lee Burridge play all of the following at different shows.
Katcha - Touched By God (Peace Division Mix)
Daft Punk - Da Funk
Marshall Jefferson - Mushrooms
Charles B - Lack Of Love
etc etc...
it's always very tasteful when he does so and the crowd loves it. |

| OH, also, I wasn't there but I remember seeing a video a few years back of Lee Burridge dropping Age of Love in a small club in Atlanta. |

Lieb was very good. His set was essentially the same as his Cream Reunion mix, except he played for an extra hour and threw in more tracks by other people; '90s techno and Eye Q-era trance. Here's the Cream set:
Quivver was a mixed bag. Played a lot of his classic Quivver remixes from the '90s which was most welcome, but he was trying to cram too many tracks in and cut them down to the most obvious parts. He played Arkham Asylum but only the climax, turning it into a 3 minute pop record. It's easy as a DJ to get addicted to the crowd reaction to a famous melody and just shove as many as possible in there. |

All the djs plays classics, even Armin, Tiesto play classics...i think the aim is to have a 3 hour set of classics regularly...
This must have been studied and the result is that a 90's set isn't profitable at big scale anymore (btw in 1998 only a few djs filled arenas now you have people which are not on the djmag playing massive gigs)
bout the cream reunion set i remember listening to it, was great but is not exactly the stuff i'd like live still would be better than 90% of the club choices i've yearly so i'd be an attendant for sure if it happened in my surroundings. |
