Daft Punk - Da Funk

Thats ing awesome.. I was listening to Daft Punk Alive 2007 recently and thought to myself man I'd love to hear a techno DJ just slow it down and bring in Da Funk with a slow fade in, it would destroyyyy! hahaha

as for classic sets, that.. playing one or two thru out the night is cool but no need to play a ing compilation cd.

The best DJs I've ever seen just play great records, old ones, new ones, a few classics.. some stuff from the 90s, a track from 3 years ago that you remember.. thats where it's at.

I meant an entire set, not the occasional drop of one throughout it.

Lieb was very good. His set was essentially the same as his Cream Reunion mix, except he played for an extra hour and threw in more tracks by other people; '90s techno and Eye Q-era trance. Here's the Cream set:

Quivver was a mixed bag. Played a lot of his classic Quivver remixes from the '90s which was most welcome, but he was trying to cram too many tracks in and cut them down to the most obvious parts. He played Arkham Asylum but only the climax, turning it into a 3 minute pop record. It's easy as a DJ to get addicted to the crowd reaction to a famous melody and just shove as many as possible in there.

Love that set!

I definitely think many DJs sacrifice quality to only play the freshest of tracks, when they could be playing some older tracks that fit better in the set.

About Sasha...yeah I really don't like what he's playing these days. It's like sometimes he's afraid of playing melodies or just holding back way too much. I like Digweed much more now as he plays stuff that's enjoyable.

I caught Digweed a few years back, and after his set ended he came back and did a brief encore with two or three tracks. When he was finally finished, some douche got right up front, leaned over the booth and chanted, "HEAVEN SCENT! HEAVEN SCENT!". John was polite at first and forced a chuckle (I'm sure it's beyond annoying after so many years) and politely shook his head no. The guy got belligerent, still shouting it but angrily. Digweed looked at him and just said, "Not now, not ever. NO," and walked off.

Digweed is happy to close out long nights with classics. John finished a gig at Glow in DC in June 2006 with Heaven Scent. In February 2007 at Fabric in London, he played Joey Beltram - Energy Flash around 6:30am and dropped Apollo 440 - Liquid Cool as his closing track.

Screw the belligerent guy, though.

I only experienced a live all-vinyl classic set 1 time. It was totally unexpected. I don't have any idea who the DJ was. It took place at a hot little location where you would only expect to hear hard house hardcore or gabber. Out of nowhere the DJ started playing Chicane 99 style trance. The whole set was flawless. Like the one by Chicane in the TA live sets archive.
I always wished I were there in those days. Oh well

in my drunken haze, i tried getting sasha to play Heart Of Imagination last time he was in town by holding up an iphone right infront of his face and he shook his head and laughed his ass off...bastard :p

I imagine it would have been the William Orbit mix of I Am Free.

EDIT: I think Sasha has become a very hot-and-cold DJ these days, through the very versatility that people value so much from a DJ. When I saw him in 2009 it was mostly white noise tech garbage, but a couple of months later there was all that hype coming out of Australia that he was back to playing melodic trancey stuff. I saw him last April and it was a solid set, lots of big atmospheric Involver-esque tracks and great set structure, and then not long after that he can come out with snooze-fest K-hole nonsense.

That OZ tour in 09 was epic. As melodic as the sets of his from the 90's. Shame we're not treated to it more often

This thread made me give some thought to promoter flyer programming... Timeslots. If Tiesto were to play his current tracklist would it be cool to have the DJ before him do a tribute set. I think so.
