This thread really isn't too bad... Could still be salvaged. Gotta get it back on track:
Did we ever figure out if caffeine is bad for you or if that's simply hippy nonsense? |

I don't think the issue was necessarily with caffeine, more about whether energy drinks are particularly bad for your health. To which I would conclude: they don't meet the Jennypie health standard, but they're certainly not as toxic as some people seem to think.
In terms of harmful substances to poison the body with, caffeine is pretty low down on my list of worries. I'm more concerned with becoming reliant on it (because it's not always available) and having to spend money on it every day as a result. |

Yeah, discounting my 10-15 shots of espresso a day thing which I think is clearly unhealthy, my biggest fear regarding the caffeine addiction is the negative effects that would occur if it was unavailable. Additionally, I would assume that it would stop being so helpful if one consumes it every day.
Good to know Red Bull won't be the thing that kills me, though. I always figured they weren't exactly great, but have known that they sure as hell aren't anywhere near the worst thing I've done to myself. |

I used to drink a can of monster or Red Bull in the early mornings when I had graveyard shift, but that was years ago. Stopped the energy drinks now. I never really liked coffee when I was younger, but now I tolerate it a little better with some hazelnut cream in it. I don't drink coffee everyday though, it's only saved on mornings when I've had a lack of sleep, or when I know I got things to get done in the day. I will drink about a 12 oz can of Pepsi or Dr. Pepper during the evening, or to chase it with vodka. The sodas are really the only thing caffeine wise that could be unhealthy to me. Even then I try not to do more than 16 oz's in one day. |

No complaints here, actually. I don't see any difference, I really drink coffee and milk because I love milk :p |

My friend, if you wish to join the active work force, you're gonna get tied to some vice one way or the other. May as well bite the bullet and become one of us... one of us... one of us...:gsmile: |

SO true. And if you don't take regular coffee breaks at work, you are bound to crawl up someone's anus and get fired. |

Or, you know, eat right and all that all other . If you're doing all the right things to begin with you shouldn't need to depend on a caffeine pick me up at any point during the day. |
Yes that's totally how health works
Clearly there are no mental (or genetic) factors in mood or motivation.
This article is overly reductionist and has a fundamental flaw in it's logic. There are drugs that mimic the same neurotransmitter (in any particular case) but have radically different effects; because of that it's silly to assume that caffiene only does exactly what you'd assume it'd do if it worked the way the article explains (blocking the a adenosine receptor without activating it). Most drugs also have effects on more than one neurotransmitter and the article also fails to explain the overall role that adenosine has to play in the body in relation to major neurotransmitters etc.
At a basic level, it makes mistakes(the assumption that caffiene only affects on neurotransmitter and that it's effects are exactly what you'd expect from the neurotransmitter not being around), and it also lacks depth(although you could keep adding depth to any topic so that's understandable). |

I drink 3-5 cups of coffee a day. My first cup, without fail, wakes me up and makes me more alert. By the end of my 3rd cup, I'm ready to get back in bed :p
Never mind the idea that it becomes less helpful over time, multiple "dosages" in a single day seem to be enough to knock a mutha a out. |

Well, that worked out well :)
I never considered caffeine to be bad, although in general "too much" never is good.
Personally I pay more attention to sugar, although I'm not a fan of light products at all. |

Red Bull is banned in France and in more countries i think (being France the more relevant) if it obeys to a true danger is what i don't know, alcohol and cigarettes are legal and are clearly unhealthy while government sell them , the fact that they refuse to sell an energy drink is certainly scary. |
