people don't actually buy them tho. I mean the only way you can sell presets is to have a demo showing how each preset sounds like a certain new track and given that most sounds are achieved via resampling and long chains of fx, selling your banks will become pretty ing impossible. I suppose unless you are selling them for a synth that has enough built in fx or a version which shows them used with fx to give an idea and it comes with a tutorial of some sort
people want the same sound. Not close. Micro djing and things for that are what sell. |

That's actually a really well put together demo.
I have another friend in the UK, not really a known name, and he makes a solid 250 quid a month from his preset sales. I thought he was pulling my leg when he first told me but it's actually a big market and it's only a minor sideline for him (School Music teacher by day, online EDM school by weekends). |

I know at least 3 people making more than the national average wage. In one case a lot more.
I dabbled last year, but this year I've got many irons in the fire, the goal is to bring in about £1k per month from the just preset sales, plus the other stuff I do.
The thing is you have to treat it like a business. Making presets is only 25% of what you actually do, and even then I'll make 200 of them to create a final 128 patch bank, a lot will get binned.
Then there's the demos, the website, the promo, the networking.
The real money is in dealing direct with the synth devs, and that's what I'll be doing a bit more of this year. |
