I'm not as down on it as it may seem, didn't really mean for it to come across like that. that's just my personality at work, always needlessly reflective and restrained.
It's just some thoughts I had about the process I wanted to share, this is still the first time I participated in the challenge and I'm not very clear on what's expected out of me. You can say that doesn't matter much but people's motivations have been thoroughly put to question multiple times now in this thread and that's before the challenge had even begun.
I decided to just go with what felt right to me this challenge, and as such felt the need to explain myself because of it. I don't think I could have done much better with this other then a complete change of direction. There's a reason I don't really do dance music any more when it comes to mixing, even though I love the music as much as any other kind.
It's just a bit of a creative sink-hole for me, I feel it stands on spontaneity and ad rem mixing skill rather then endlessly working on refined mixing structures. That's why I ended up doing it all in one go when I was in the mood for it and getting an early submit because of that.
Again I don't think this is a terrible mix, Other then it kind of running out of ideas at the end I found it decently enjoyable.

There could have been better picks for me, sure, but I wasn't expecting to win the lottery here the first time around. I don't dislike the notion that there needs to be an element of gameplay here and I do like a good gamble every now and then.
I just don't think it's for me, and that's always going to limit the amount of motivation I have for this. I don't like being restrained in terms of track choice but at the same time I don't want to invest too much time in the crate digging phase either. That's why I like a bit of freedom in terms of genre boundaries.
If I'd have rolled industrial or something then I wouldn't have had this problem, but then again the entire challenge factor would have disappeared completely. |

You are expected to deliver a mix within the genre and time limit given, and hopefully even having a bit of fun while doing so. Nothing more. |

^Well we should be fine then. Whether or not it's within the right genre remains to be seen, but I can certainly have some more fun in my life now that I'm done with it ;)

I really liked the first half (esp the first few songs, I'll probably be grabbing most of them) and the second half not so much. I don't know much (read: anything) about garage music in the 90's so I can't really comment on how well or not you hit the genre, the first half seems pretty on point w/ garage and then it just gets a bit housey and I'm not so sure due to lack of knowledge. Someone else probably can judge how well you hit the genre more than me.
In any case I enjoyed it. |

I don't really know anything about 90s house, but the mix bierheld did was good. It did feel like there was a clear change in style halfway through the mix though. It's too bad you didn't get a genre that appealed to you more. I've gotta say though, as a listener these challenges are really nice. It's nice hearing djs take on a new style that might not be mixed here much at all, or alternatively it's just nice seeing the combo between that person's mixing style and that style of music.
I'd be interested in hearing you do some dance mixes. I reckon if you had more flexibility with choice of tracks and a more flexible timeline you could've made a really good mix. As it stands this one's alright and a worthy listen. |

Thanks guys, yeah the first half is definitely the one I found more interesting too, but it was so far removed from all the other music I found while researching that I wan't comfortable with continuing in that direction if I even could have without sticking with a mix that's almost entirely centred around one label.
I figured I'd just choose a few sounds and gradually work my way through them to keep a bit of that genre heritage and ambiguity theme. Again I wanted to go further along that route but didn't succeed for this reason.
It's definitely a consequence of being restrained, but I can't really use that as an excuse because technically I was free to go in whatever direction I wanted and there's definitely garage flavours out there that are more prolific on beatport. |

How I worked:
- Googled 'Psychill' (read)
- Googled 'Psychill artists' (watched)
- Googled 'Psychill artist song' (listened)
- Collected a few good songs which I thought fitted the description of Psychill (acted)
- Try to make a smooth mix (mixed)
The 'read - watched - listened - acted - mixed' - way !
Since there are a lot of dreamy sounds, stretching strings and blurry beats, the best thing I could come up with was trying to mix everything melodic. Blending sounds and strings... :)
I kept it short because I felt I couldn't do anything more or anything special to make it sound extra special for people who are not familiar (like me) with this genre. |
