Jon, I've added you to the list with psy-chill as the suggested genre. If you have a problem with that just let me know.

I'll throw my name into the ring now. We now have 6 competitors.

No problems here, it doesn't bother me what people call their music as long as they can convey what it means. Sounds accurate enough, thanks. :)

It just sounds like generic ethno-flavoured downtempo that you hear in Indian restaurants and on those Buddha Bar 27 compilations in supermarkets, albeit with a mild dubstep influence on the production aesthetic.

Not that you care, but I've pretty much lost all respect for you at this point between your incredibly ignorant view of music to your stupid little inductive psychoanalysis of my person based on a few Internet Forums Posts

too broad... i love a lot of different kinds of garage - can you narrow it down just a tiny bit? I'm curious what you are getting at (or you can provide some examples!)

Actually, after seeing how you like to over complicate something that is not complicated at all (music) I wouldn't waste my time.

I think the problem is that music is in fact complicated and highly subjective, and that mixed with the fact we are on the internet and people get Really Upset (see: this thread), is making this more difficult than it needs to be. Maybe we should require you post at least a few examples with you're genre to avoid the following 3 posts that are inherently going to ask for them? And maybe we can stop bitching about what words someone chooses as long as the sound of the music is obvious?

LOL how is garage too broad...

that's the whole point of this contest. It's interesting to see everyone's take on the genre's being suggested. With Garage, people are free to go either the old school direction, new school direction, a little bit of both, maybe straight UK garage, maybe a little bit of both UK and US, maybe vocals, etc.

Honestly that's the beauty of this challenge.

*edit: I realized I answered my own question, sorry. My point was that a term like Garage is broad enough to allow enough creativity on the part of the DJ. Anything more specific than that it becomes kind of a pointless challenge.

I would love to make a garage mix.

To play devil's advocate, there is NYC Garage (after the club), and UK Garage. You could also misconstrue this for Future Garage.

I would chomp for all of these genres; however it could be seen as vague even though Jon likes peckers.

I love genres. So ing much.

I'll make sure you get a decent selection from the genres if you sign up. It would be awesome to have classic elFreak in the challenge.

I agree somewhat with your statement. The problem is, is that we humans over complicate many things that are not complicated by nature. Music is an expression of emotions. It is us who have put man made labels on things. I play what many would call Trance, Progressive House, Techno and Deep House. When I'm behind the decks, I don't label it as such though. The tracks I play are just pieces of the puzzle with the overall goal to tell my story.
I would like to participate, but I am not interested in playing a genre that would be emotionless for me, with all due respect.

Who the is this guy?

:haha: Who knew this challenge would generate so many arguments. Was it really like this back when they happened regularly?

@michael: The whole point of this initiative is to give yourself a challenge as a DJ and put together a story with tracks you wouldn't normally play or even know about. I once refused to listen to or play certain types of electronic music, but I attribute my overall growth as a DJ to when I experimented with other genres and played them out in a mix. Of course it's fine if you don't want to participate in a challenge such as this but I believe you are missing out :)

Naturally, I'm really hoping to get Garage as my genre...
