I really enjoyed this actually. Beginning was a lot more stripped down and, hmmm, odd than I was expecting from a garage mix but enjoyable nonetheless. The second half was more what I was expecting (although I am very far from being any kind of expert on this). Highlight was Lets Groove, haven't heard that in quite a while and its a great track, delivered nicely as well. So, yeah, all in all good stuff, had me chair dancing which I think is the ultimate test for any dance music mixes that I listen to at work :) |

I was given "Industrial" - which I interpreted as very high level description of types of sounds and feelings or emotions evoked by the music. I have interpreted this genre as a style of music that focuses on dark themes, unnerving sounds, and oftentimes harsh and abrasive tones. Beat structure varies greatly, and some songs even have constantly evolving rhythms, which should give the listener some confusion or, to reuse the word, make them feel a bit unnerved.
The general idea, from my perspective, was to make a mix that takes the listener through an, at times, uncomfortable journey, through dark and "mysterious" - and by that, I mean, unnerving passages, with the use of intense sounds, literal industrial (i.e. manufacturing machines) type soundscapes.
How I went about making this mix:
I have been collecting tracks like this for some time. I've never compiled them together in any way and they were scatted throughout my library. I scanned through the mix that zipnif posted to make sure my idea of what industrial was at least on par with what he had in mind - the only additional research I did was to read a thread on the SA forums, which was focused on "electro-industrial", some pages online (including wikipedia), and asking some friends who occasionally listen to "industrial music".
The majority of the time was spent digging up tracks from the past 3 or 4 years, and then downselecting them based on the themes described above, by my understanding of industrial.
I've never mixed this type of music before, and it was a lot of fun.
Genres: Industrial, dark-downtempo/ambient, dark-electronica (both of these are essentially subgenres of industrial based on my understanding)

The good:
I enjoyed this overall, and there were a few tracks I've never heard before. The second track in particular stood out to me.
The neutral:
do want to say this isnt what I was expecting - I had more in mind artists like kalya scintilla, bluetech, radioactive sandwich, and wu wei, as a few examples. obviously the change to a more generalized genre occurred so this isnt a positive or negative. I don't really know why I bring this up as you still hit the genre fairly accurately.
The bad:
The first and last songs didn't fit the rest of the mix. The first was too ambient, and the last was way too psychedelic and energetic. The rest of the tracks are appropriate, but I have some words to say about the flow.
With this genre I expect somewhat long transitions for the majority of the transitions, yet most of them felt short. This says to me that perhaps the tracks you picked don't really jive with each other, which means either that the flow/order could use some work, or that the actual track selection as they related to each other was too varied - for example, track 2, 3, 4, and 5 all rotate from chill to energetic to chill to energetic. While its very appropriate to have tracks in this genre of music that switch up the tempo, beat style, and energy it doesn't sound very good when you are changing up the energy on each track, and then going right back where you were on the previous track. As I don't own all these songs, I cant say for sure there was a better layout and flow, but that is how it felt after listening. My first thought is that with such a short mix, it might have been better to slowly build linearly with these songs than to have energy changes.
Flow is all a matter of preference, anyways. That is just my opinion. Take from it what you will.
I know I wrote a lot of "bad" - it's easier for me to write more words that sound negative than positive - so don't take this the wrong way. I did enjoy it. I'm definitely going to pick up some of these tracks.
will update w/ sand leaper's mix when I'm done!

I'm done as well now. This was originally meant to be a fun mixtape-like affair, where I'd go through a bunch of old stuff that has been sampled throughout the years by all genres utilising breakbeats. Then montana messaged me on Facebook and said that wasn't what he meant by funky breaks, but rather "breaks" as pioneered by labels like Skint, Fingerlickin' and Bolshi, which is the type of breaks I was never all that enthusiastic about. So, in the end, I gathered handful of tracks from the mid-late 90s, with a few oddities mixed in for good measure. That's about as fancy as I could be bothered to make the mix this time around. Beatmixing this in Traktor was an absolute nightmare, but it should be tolerable now, after a couple of attempts.

god damn this mix is sick, which is what i was expecting given some of your other mixes and the genre. where can I download? i need this
sorry i dont have anything else to say - its funky as hell. I love it. I'm barely 15 mins into it. I'll come back and edit more if it suddenly falls apart but I don't see that happening.
I'm definitely going to be picking up all of these tracks
e: Finished it. some funky tempo stuff around the 20 min mark. that's all i noticed. Really enjoyed it. Not 100% sure all the tracks are straight up "funky breaks"? but to my ears, I couldnt tell. |

Just going to go ahead and say I was called out on another forum for using this word. Apparently the proper definition for these words is something like this: https://soundcloud.com/nachtplan/nachtplan-tanz-vol15 - which I, honest to god, cant listen to for more than 3 seconds without wanting to tear out my eyeballs.
I still consider some of the tracks harsh or abrasive, but it's more on a scale relative to the other stuff I listen to which is light, chill, and somewhat fluffy.
I'm not so sure I got at all close to the genre here. Lots of the tracks are similar to some of the stuff I heard in the LIES podcast but a lot of it isn't.
e: ya its pretty clear to me i ed this mix up royally. |

| Well I've gotta say, the ny hard house mix is definitely way out of my listening range normally. The first few tracks I wasn't really that into, but after 20 minutes it's pretty awesome. I feel like if one of the main goals was to keep the variety up then it's achieved it well. Hmm, what else to say, suffice to say this is going to get a few relistens. It's got a good overall finish as well. |

djdk, I'm listening to this on a day where I went to bed at 5 in the morning following a mental night out with DJ Marky playing some stellar drum & bass at one of Stockholm's club. I woke up at 2 in the afternoon and after doing some other business, I took a few listens to your mix and it certainly fit the mood I was in. The trackselection is a bit on the safe side apart from a few unexpected moment but then again this comes with the territory of this kind of thing but the mix had a nice flow to it, so really well done mate.
Sand Leaper, Already said to you on facebook what I thought about the mix on the first listen but anyhow. You certainly took liberties with the genre on the base of your personal likings but if it didn't turn out brilliant because of it. I love how you tackled the mix and played funky breakbeats in all differnt flavours. From the lower bpm big beat that sounds like it could have doubled as an except from The Chemical Brothers mid 90's dj sets in the first part prior the Madlib track you used as an interlude.
Following that there it more sounds like the Wall of Sound label, which I'm a big fan of, and you build up steam quite nicely to the peak points of the classic hardcore sound of DJ Mink and the Bassbin Twins excursion of the Skint-catalogue. After that it cools down quite well and again you played a favourite track of min which is that brilliant Swag remix of Tiny Trendies and it plays out nice right up till the end.
Now onto some of the comments for my mix. Bierheld, (and later on Psyshell) to some respects and on some points I do agree with you. If you want delve deeper into this material with interesting percussion I would look in the direction of where it sort of interchangeable with dark tribal prog house. Because I interpreted from your comments that you didn't like the moments of NYHH which just focuses on the distorted organ-sound and was straight uplifting. I could have easily played more of that in the mix but I like that stuff in parts. And in a setting where it's made for home-listening, I would say it benefits when it's played as layers and my version of Traktor just has two decks so it makes it more difficult.
But I certainly agree that some of the elements of this music needs to be taken in chunks which is why I chose to go through few of the different flavours of NYHH. From the beginning where it touches on it's Garage roots to where it's more uplifting and starts to incorporate the tribal loops but has more focus on the distorted organ. Later where the focus is more on the drums and then some of my favourite moments when producers took it the extreme and just made these balls to the wall anthems. |

So, I was definitely drinking when I recorded this, and, to my ears at least, it's rather obvious by the end. Hopefully not too distracting :p
Anyways, some of the tracks in this mix are acid, but not techno, and some of the tracks are techno, but not acid. Despite that, I'm rather happy with how this turned out. I didn't want to go the easy route and just play a ton of classic acid techno tracks, but I also definitely wanted to play some oldies. This mix ended up being a bit of a compromise between old and new. Hopefully people will enjoy it :)

I'll be very disappointed if you haven't played Access.
Some of these look really good, I'll try and weigh in with some thoughts from Monday, when I get the net back at home. |

| I think I'll have to suffer your disappointment, then! In my defense, I was following your dictum of not repeating tracks I've used in previous mixes :p |
