Tiesto Roxy Review (pg. 2)

I'll post a review Matt... :whip:

The was easily the worst liveset I've ever heard.... technically Tiesto is the worst "big name" DJ around... recently I've thought his mixing has gotten bad but I was willing to give him a chance last night... he blew it...

I was outside at about 2:30 and I see Tiesto's arrival... he's got some posse of about 15 guys with him and he's just oozing overconfidence... He doesn't acknowledge any fans.. just walks by thinking he's god on earth... I should have realized it was gonna be a bad night right then and there...

So anyway, I get inside with my friends and it's actually pretty decent... Noel Sanger was spinning some nice music although it was a little too fluffy for my tastes... but the club was nice.. nice lights.. nice decor... good job on that... the sound, however, left much to be desired though.. more on that later...

Alright at about 3:15 Tiesto comes on... he starts off with some breakbeat track I couldn't remember (chemical borthers?).. it was good but I was thinking to myself, "there's no way he's gonna pull off a decent mix out of this track"... Unsurprisingly, he couldn't... all he did was kill the breakbeat and turn up the bass on the one coming in... it was unbelievable...

His mixing continued like this for the rest of the night... kill channels... drop bass... it was terrible... and the best part is, he didn't even try... I mean.. he didn't concentrate on any mix or anything.. he'd put down a record.. do a little dance and talk to his posse... then he'd come back 5 mintues later (after the track had been played too long and was well into it's outro), try to beatmatch and cue a track, and bring it in totally wrong... and I know now you're thinking "arnold... you're dumb...he does his dancing to get the crowd pumped up and he's allowed to talk to his friends.. tiesto makes you fly and "... that's crap.. solid mixing gets a crowd pumped up and you should at least put some effort into a mix... I remember he had the crowd going crazy when he was playing lethal industry and his mix out of it was so incredibly off.. he killed all the energy in the club... unbelievable... so many times, he'd also bring up the treble on the incoming track and then immediately pull it down, realizing he was bringing it in too early... it was so bad... .. this guy's been mixing for years and to still make mistakes like this is rediculous..

Now I know some of you are saying, "oooh.. arnold... you're stupid.. tiesto was having a bad night... he's actually really the god of mixing and even god makes mistakes...".. bull... I used to be a fan and the last three times he's been in New York I've completely lost faith in him.. he has no mixing skills... all his fame has gone to his head and he thinks he can just do crap mixes and he'll still pack a crowd... which is sadly true...

I also think he was playing with the damn phazon too much or maybe it just sounds like at roxy (i think you're right, matt).. they said steve dash would be on hand to hand tune it? yeah.. sure... that guy must be deaf... the system's bass was super muddy (although it did give a nice thump) and the treble almost blew my ears to hell... then again.. the lights were nice.. lots of lasers and crazy mirrors.. ooooh shiny!

The only highlight of the night.. or two actually.. were when he played Gouryella - Gouryella and Fire and Ice - Neverending Melody... I never thought I'd live to hear those two songs in a club but when I did I was pleasently surprised... too bad his mixes into the songs were ...

So to sum up.. yesterday was ... fame has gone to Tiesto's head and he doesn't care about putting on a decent show... he plays way too much of the intro and outro of each song and lays down ty, unskillful mixes... I feel completely ripped off after last night and can safely say I will never go to another one of his shows again...
:whip: :whip: :whip:

.. and roxy.. tune that system before sasha, cox, and pvd come.. please...

I'm glad someone agrees with me.. i thought i was gonna get flamed big time for that post... then again anyone who was there should have realized the extent of tiesto's crapiness...

you know i was really pissed that he was taking peoples requests for autographs or handshakes and he would give them dirty looks or take the paper look at it then ING THROW IT BACK IN THE FANS FACE like hes too good to sign an autograph.... its not like he was concentrating on his set anyway.....

really pisses me off.....

I think this was the best Tiesto @ New York set ever. His mixing was obviously not TECHMICALLY perfect, it has never been and it would be ridiculous to expect the skills of a Digweed or PvD from Tiesto. However, what has always made Tiesto stand out from the rest was there in the most sophisticated way yet, the creativity in mixing and blending harmonic and rhythmic textures was off the hook.
I thought it was genius how Tiesto would literally play with your emotions constantly taking you UP and DOWN in such an effective and coherent way by using a wide variety of genres. Diversity has given Tiesto another dimension that most people can't handle.

Choobak, maybe this is not your kind of trance, but Tiesto's track selection was not only never boring imo, it was genius. His mixing might not be beatmatched perfectly, but his epic uplifting style was there all night from the first breakbeat song till the Orange theme. MANY people were part of the so-called MAGIK JOURNEY (one girl even told my friends that she came).

Tiesto is now about contrasts and he has definitely gone back to his classical music roots. The mofo uses deceptive cadences to around with and control the crowd (and very successfully, i might add)making you suffer because you really never know what to expect next, just like Beethoven or Mozart do in their symphonies and whatnot.

He was very nice to us and he even gave my friend one of his own records autographed. Just listening to the beautiful mix into GOURYELLA GOURYELLA made the night one of the best ever.

chookbak, your review was why i didn't go last night. after talking to john i kinda wish i could have gone so i could have seen everyone, but i'll get to do that at pvd. i saw underworld last night and they were awesome. i just didn't have the money to risk another bad set from tiesto. i like his productions and all but his mixing is almost painful for me.

though i would've liked to hear him spin breaks. i love breaks....
Choobak
well, butterfly.. i wish i hadn't gone too... and he didn't really spin breaks... he doesn't have the mixing skills to do it...

pio... of course his mixing skills were not perfect.. it's not like he was in a studio or something where he could redo any terrible mix (and i'm sure he has many)... what I'm saying is that he put no effort into his mixing... he spent most of his time talking to friends and twisting the eqs like some damn suburban club dj...

I don't think I quite understand what you mean by "creativity in mixing" and "blending harmonic and rhythmic textures" and all your musical terminology (cadence? thought that was a rhythmic sequence of sound in language or something)... to me, good mixing involves selecting tracks that complement eachother and mixing them in such a way that they produce a coherent set and build energy in the crowd ... tiesto did not do this... he played songs for far too long... he didn't mix until well into the outro of songs and mixed in early into the intros of songs... this completely kills of any flow in a set... it just ends up being a rollercoaster ride... his set showed no direction either... it seemed to me like he was just picking random records out of his box... now.. maybe you'd call this diversity in style... or the basis of the "magik journey" (and I'm sorry I can't handle this    )... but to me this is just mxing without foresight... I mean... he mixed Southern Sun into Neverending Melody into Flight 643... that just doesn't work...

I enjoyed his track selection very much... he played sutff I have listened to and sometimes still do listen to on a regular basis... that wasn't the problem... it was his atrocious mixing and "i don't give a about the mix" attitude...

oh.. and please don't compare tiesto to Beethoven or Mozart...
kid nyce
it didnt matter much to me, underworld was bliss when born slippy captured me, gouryella was a surprise, and the massive amounts of alcohol made the night for me. thnx to everyone i got to chill with...
