pio... of course his mixing skills were not perfect.. it's not like he was in a studio or something where he could redo any terrible mix (and i'm sure he has many)... what I'm saying is that he put no effort into his mixing... he spent most of his time talking to friends and twisting the eqs like some damn suburban club dj...

I don't think I quite understand what you mean by "creativity in mixing" and "blending harmonic and rhythmic textures" and all your musical terminology (cadence? thought that was a rhythmic sequence of sound in language or something)... to me, good mixing involves selecting tracks that complement eachother and mixing them in such a way that they produce a coherent set and build energy in the crowd ... tiesto did not do this... he played songs for far too long... he didn't mix until well into the outro of songs and mixed in early into the intros of songs... this completely kills of any flow in a set... it just ends up being a rollercoaster ride... his set showed no direction either... it seemed to me like he was just picking random records out of his box... now.. maybe you'd call this diversity in style... or the basis of the "magik journey" (and I'm sorry I can't handle this    )... but to me this is just mxing without foresight... I mean... he mixed Southern Sun into Neverending Melody into Flight 643... that just doesn't work...

I enjoyed his track selection very much... he played sutff I have listened to and sometimes still do listen to on a regular basis... that wasn't the problem... it was his atrocious mixing and "i don't give a about the mix" attitude...

oh.. and please don't compare tiesto to Beethoven or Mozart...

Sorry for all the musical terms,I'm a classical musician and that's the perspective where i'm coming from. What you describe as a "rollercoaster ride" is what made me love that set so much. A deceptive cadence is a harmonic sequence based on deceiving the expectations of the listener, that's where my comparison with the classics came from(i know it's kind of way off). For example when you hear a chord based on the dominant(the V tone of the scale), your ear demands a resolution into the tonic(I). But composers such as Beethoven went from V to VI to raise the levels of tension in the music, giving their music a rollercoaster ride kind of feel of ups and downs. It's like no, not yet, Lethal Industry blew everyone's mind and the audience expects the DJ to keep it banging, but no, Tiesto is not a jukebox, he's gonna with your head, chill you out, and then destroy you with even greater force with something like Silverbath a few tracks later.

Tiesto is ALL about creating tension and he never lost me last night as well as most people at the club (real trance fans to say the least), it always got harder and more intense. I literally cried with the beautiful transition of Gatex into Clockwork Orange, the contrast of 2002 Tiesto with the classic Innercity 1998 last track was not only mindblowing, but a symbol of how Tiesto has evolved. I agree that SOME tracks he played out for way too long but definitely they were the minority. I found the track placement to be very coherent and made sense to me all the time and found it to be extremely effective in conveying the feel that Tiesto sets have always had, but in such a more sophisticated way than two or three years af.
I actually predicted what tracks he would probably play next in many occasions. I don't know you, but maybe you're a PvD or hard trance fan who's all about UPS UPS and UPS, banging pumping trance all the time. That is much more boring for myself, but again is all about personal taste.

I could ID most tracks as you saw in the post above, so i hope you don't think of me as another blind Tiesto worshiper. The DJ Booth was in an awkward position and i bet it was better distrtacting for him. I know he has flaws and he was waaaaay far from perfect in mixing technic. But Tiesto did it for me last night, he has never failed me. I've seen him 5 times already and he seriously gets better and more sophisticated with time.

Choobak, maybe this is not your kind of trance, but Tiesto's track selection was not only never boring imo, it was genius. His mixing might not be beatmatched perfectly, but his epic uplifting style was there all night from the first breakbeat song till the Orange theme. MANY people were part of the so-called MAGIK JOURNEY (one girl even told my friends that she came).

in NO WAY was that a Majik Journey....he BARELY played any trademark Tiesto uplifting tracks...so i dont kow what your talking about....he spun manily tech-trance.....

u want a Majik Journey listen to Magik 6...or Live at Eurodance Melkweg 1999 or his rescent set at Club Space....then u will hear a Majik Journey....where it takes you from the lowest point and leaves u at the paragon of euphoria...

a MAJIK JOURNEY would start with a track like "Majik Journey" and end with a track like "Cloud Walking".......and everything in between takes u on a voyage...in no way can tech trance take u on a REAL TISTO MAJIK JOURNEY....never happen!!!

is that to imply that "I" am not a real trance fan because i thought Tiesto SUCKED?....

LOL dude i was lisening to DJ Tiesto when you where still listening to Green Day in grade school....

i KNOW Tiesto and i KNOW his Majik Journeys...the MAJORITY of people i met, WHICH WAS ALOT, where "NEW fans....that where there for their first times....because they caught the buzz of Tiesto from tracks like Flight 643 and Silence....

EVOLVED?...hows that?.....Tiesto started his DJing career as a TECHNO DJ...so how did he evolve from Gatex?...

and Innercity was from 1999 not 1998

dont get me wrong i LOVE Tiesto...but i think his EGO is getting to him....which is reflecting in his sets...too bad i hope he doesnt forget his ORIGINAL fans that liked him BEFORE Silence ....the ones like me who have been listening to him since 1998...i considr myself knowledgeable on Tiesto...
and i think if you compared his skills, his admiration for his fans, and his track selections from LATE this year (meaning the past few months) to ones from 1997 to late 2001 early 2002 u would see a difference....

change is good...dont get me wrong...but dotn let the success get to your head...and remember the ones who loved and supported you when noone knew who you where....simple as that.

Well, I'm glad Tiesto managed to take you on such a wonderful, orgasmic voyage... if only I were a great enough trance fan to appreciate his mastery...

I don't even think this is worth arguing about anymore... we just keep diverging anyway... I'm saying Tiesto's fame has gone to his head and he doesn't concentrate on his mixing therefore making for incoherent sets where a mix consists of killing channels and dropping the bass... I don't like sets with crappy mixing.. I don't care how fantastic the track selection is... if it doesn't flow it just doesn't work...

Now you have a different opinion and that's fine.. but please don't assume things about me in such a condecending manner ... Tiesto did lose me last night but that doesn't mean I'm not a huge trance fan... and I am a huge PvD fan and I like big build ups but I'm also a Sasha fan and love slow, dark prog/tech trance... I think I have a pretty decent understanding of what's good and what sucks... and frankly, Tiesto sucked major balls...

hmmm i've been listening to Tiesto since 1997, way before Silence. Ever since Magik 1 came out, and i never listened to Green Day :tongue2

I just think that some people are more open to variety and change than others. I think that Gatex is a great track to end a set with a bang and it is very coherent to place it last. Especially since he played Clockwork Orange right after it. You weren't even there at that time so you can't really say. But that was BRILLIANT.

Like all kinds of art, music appreciation is subjective. If some people didn't enjoy it that's fine. But plenty of hardcore Tiesto fans enjoyed it, including myself, so whatever, Tiesto is #1.

Oh and yes, I was at the World on October last year and last night was better according to my judgement and taste :disbelief

I'm sorry if I assumed anything, I wasn't being condescending though. I love PvD, and I love Sasha even more. Tiesto's mixing skills might have been "crappy", but they have always been like that.
Most people like Tiesto14 are complaining b/c they don't like his change of style in track selection. I personally loved it, and you said you liked most of the songs, just not placement and mixing.

It's all about taste. I'll go to PvD in 2 weeks and although I don't think I'll enjoy it more than last night, i'll give it a try. Peace.

are u implying i am not a hardcore fan>?

and if last night was MORE your taste then how could u POSSIBLY of liked Tiesto since 1997 and say last night was more your style?

since its not at all the same style Tiesto played up till this year.??????

LOL...at World he closed with CLOUD WALKING....that blows GATEX out of the box anyday as a closer

No, of course you're a hardcore fan....but just not of the new Tiesto and that's fine.

Like any good artist, he has evolved along the years and has managed to evolve the taste of a great number of his fans. You're just not one of them. I actually think that the new (tribal, tech, prog, breaks, whatever) he spins in combination to the best uplifting stuff out there perfectly fits a NEW kind of Magik Journey. It worked for me and for most people out there, it's just about taste, nothing personal.

And ending a set with Clockwork Orange is better than Cloudwalking IMO. So that made last night's set better than the World one.
