People posting about politics on social media (pg. 3)

@stu - you gotta love Australian politics. I was ing shocked when I saw that Tone had be torpedoed. Amazing how sudden it was.

technically, it's the same in the UK - you;re not voting for a person, you vote for a party and that leader can be ousted while the party remains in power (Maggie/Major, Blair?brown etc), then in by-elections you're really voting for a local constituent, then in London, the mayor actually has a fair amount of power to make local laws that will affect your everyday life.

What jack said is on point; if you listen to the echo chamber on either side, Trump will be going up against Sanders, and neither will get the nom.

It's so early in the race, and cable/internet news has so much content space they need filling (not to mention this is the once-a-leap-year golden hay making season for polling companies, lobbyists, political consultants and fundraisers) that what's going on now is completely irrelevant to what we'll end up with in real race in late 2016.

Again, that's why anyone spouting opinions now, is just doing it for the same reasons the politicians are; They like the sound of their own voice.

p.s. Where's Kevin?

It really bad here in the states.

And to be honest, most of it comes from middle aged people or older .

At least from what ive come across, its mostly the "right" , the extreme conservatives that are intolerable to anything , not the moderate right

And the threads in which it is about gun control or regulation are probably the worst.

I blame fox news at least partly.

When the Right converse with the Left, it's usually Right calling Left commies or some stereotype and Left calling Right dumb asses who are spoonfed by Fox News. Nothing gets done and just name calling. And when the Left try to have a civil intellectual conversation, the Right just resort to it's too complex, both sides are right, so nothing gets discussed, like the gun issue. Or the Right smear the Left, so both sides are wrong, and again, nothing gets discussed.

Facebook has become a place to just reinforce own prejudices and beliefs.

You're not factoring one incredibly important thing:

Studies (and there was a huge metastudy on this) have concluded by their very nature, that conservatives and people who identify with "the right" are more closed minded and less open to change and or new ways of doing things. They are far more skeptical of challenging the status quo.

Conversely, Liberals or "Lefties" by nature are more open minded to change and new methodologies. Most studies showed that these groups of people were far more likely to adapt to and accept change.

This is one of the reasons that the GOP is in such trouble now since they've become more and more polarized to the right and hard line conservatism, they are become more niche in their base and much more exclusive, essentially narrowing their base and with that sources of information (i.e. Fox news that has increasingly pandered to this).

Liberals have become the party of inclusion and with this expanded their base, which is why they are doing especially well with latinos and naturalized citizens. Furthermore youth who tend to to be more open to change and therefore identify more.

This election will be won (just like Obama did) by appealing to as many groups as possible, not by polarizing what tiny but fanatical base you have, which is the only thing Trump and Carson are doing.

The huge problem with the GOP is that to get the nomination, you have to be hardcore right wing to please the caucuses, but in doing so you alienate the rest of america.

At this point the only thing that is really interesting is whether Bernie Sanders can show he's got the accumen to navigate this all the way, and even then we may end up with Clinton / Sanders ticket, in which the GOP don't stand a chance for the next 8 years.

^^ Interesting,

Another problem is that the internet and social media makes it wayyyy to easy to "self select" your information inputs. In most cases , this only reaffirms peoples bias.

To make matters worse, the hard right is easy picking for online financial exploitation. I work in digital marketing , so it is easy for me to see this extremely conservative sites that pander to the hard right....and also exploit them for their money.

A guy i know works with such a site.... and he doesnt even believe half of what he writes, but he makes a lot of money from stirring the pot and making people believe that Obama is the devil and the end is ushering the destruction of America, Capitalism , and everything else our founding fathers stood for.

Its actually pretty easy. You attack the emotional side of things ( Destruction of christianity by muslims , and destruction of the founding fathers values) then follow up with what many would perceive as a logical argument i.e some bull about dated classical economic theory from adam smiths wealth of nations and free market systems

My main source of news comes from the facebook 'feed'. I subscribe to as many newspapers as I can, and each outlet is responsible for a 'posting' or a 'piece' that you can glance or scroll through or even read...not bad.

re: elections - banana republic demagoguery trumps diplomatic dialogue. I'm sorry is Ben Carson an idiot? I would say so, and I would also like to add that many people have polled for carson merely for being BLACK- oh yes I DID. I'm sorry he believes (or at least propagates a belief aka pandering) in the bible's 'seven-day creation' of the universe; questions evolution; posits that the Big Bang is a bit like 'Climate Change', and the list goes on.

I think you guys are underestimating the power of polling. Trump-Mania was just a gaffe a year ago; tomorrow he could become the republican nominee, then president: yet a self-proclaimed life-long democrat! The funny thing is, Republicans want to sabotage Trump at all cost . This all seems futile to the conspiracy theorists who say 'it's the shadow government that controls this Nation (and the world)' - an otherworldy power: an underground vril society , if you will.

I leave you with Himmler's Mayan Warrior Skull.

I still wish The Roast was around though. Either Turnbull has done nothing stupid yet, or I need some Aussie humour to know what your prime ministers are up to :p
