I like minidisc players because they're SMALL. I can fit this one and 3 discs in my pocket. The MP3/CD players are great, but they're still not as convenient (and also they can't record!!)

Downtown as in south of Bloor, or downtown as in south of Markham? :p

what about those MP3/CD players that play 8cm CDR's/CDRW's.. ? they're about the same size as an MD player. And why do you need a recordable player when most ppl here have CD-burners. I don't know any of my friends who have burners slower than 32X at the least..

no, not necessarily .. only the first generation players record in real time. Most of the newer NetMD's come with a USB cable that can record up to 32X.. but DON'T BE FOOLED! there's also a catch .. the faster your recording speed the lower the quality of your playback. for instance, recording at 32X requires the music to be written in LP4 .. which is basically the lowest quality (just somewhere around 112k bit rate from what i've read, altho unconfirmed!). IF I owned an MD (which I don't, and don't want to) I'd only want to record at say SP which is maxed at 4X recording. and I'd have to use the USB cable which basically puts my optical ports on my SB Live! drive front hub to waste.. I don't know about those new Type-R recorders, so maybe some of you MD ppl can clue me in on it.. :D

now, I'm probably leaving some important "MD selling pitch" material out since I'm not a proud owner of one , so I'll just wait for DigiNut's or any other MD owner's rebuttal to this ..

damn, why must everything have a "catch"?

:(

but still, i think i'd go for a MD as sound quality is still way superior as opposed to an mp3 player... which MD's are good?

wells.. most of the mp3's that i listen to on my iMP-350 are encoded at 160k bit-rate which sounds just fine to me ..

if you want a good quality NetMD look to spend around $350+ for the unit..

which at that price, it might just be more worth getting one of those flash memory based players..

here's my prediction: eventually Compact Flash or SD cards will hold enough memory at a reasonable cost .. say .. 512 MB - 1 Gig @ about $25 / card. at that point , CF based MP3 players would become the norm replacing both Mp3/CD and NetMD based players..

it's not happening now, but it's not too far down the road trust me..

http://www.minidisco.com <--- awesome site, amazing products and deals

http://www.minidisc-canada.com <--- good as well.

i have 2 md players. a sharp one from maybe 3 or 4 years ago. i replaced it with a sony mzr900 maybe 2 years ago cause the volume was doing strange things. although i prefer the recordings on the sharp player. they seem a little bit fuller.

so at 160k bit-rate, how long does that translate to in terms of minutes of storage?

around 16X .. that would be at LP2 I believe ..

so .. 60 mins of MP3 160k-bit audio at approximately 4 minutes of recording time thru USB..

hmm, an hour, that should be enough...

how much is that iMP-350? do you have a link for it?

my brother bought my iMP-350 for me .. it was about $125 USD on Amazon.com at the time. the good thing was that there was no shipping or tax! so it came to just under $200 CDN at the time..

the cheapest place to buy that thing right now is at Canada Computers inside Pacific Mall (and no they don't have SARS lol). The iFP-300 and 195 that you pointed out are both Flash memory blased players which at the moment are quite pricy. you're looking at almost $250-300 CDN for them , about the same price as an entry level NetMD player. the iFP-300 isn't out yet, but it's looking damn sweet !

If you own an MD and listen to Trance, chances are you don't record @ LP4, cuz the quality really is . LP2 is the most optimal choice for me. it fits ~2h (more) on a single MD, and takes ~20 minutes to record.

As for sound quality I found it varies greatly with the MD, sony makes sound, I'll tell you that much. I've had a sharp MD (2 of them, older generation) excellent sound quality, deep bass crisp notes. Aiwa MD, same story. And finally today, I have a sony MD and I must say quality is much worse, the bass isn't as deep as im used to (however the crispness is still there)...SO just go shop around, consider buying from the net.
