This is off topic, but it seems like you all know so much about tech
specs.

So you don't have a CD Player in your car, and you really want one. You're low on cash, and you're already own a Diskman. All you have is the plain old tape plaing stereo in the car. Basiclly, how do those "Car Adaptors" work? You connect the tape to the Diskman and insert the tape into the stereo and your stereo playes CDs...right? Does the quality diminish in the process? Any advantages of iT? Disadvantages? Afterall, quality is what counts the most.

(There is always radio, but 103.5 LIVE from PALLAZO....makes me want to crash into things.)

No to 103.5!!! :D

Now as to your question, you're right about the adapter - is essentially a modified tape with a cable that connects to the line-out on your CD player (discman). The advantages are that you can play CD's in your car (if it doesn't have a cd player itself). There really aren't any disadvantages. I don't know about sound quality, but I'm sure it's not that much of a difference, or if it is, you won't be able to tell in your car, because cars nowadays don't have very good quality speakers in them anyway.

So if you have a car adapter, or are thinking of getting, one, go right ahead - they are quite useful and work very well. Especially against the evil pallazo hordes. :disbelief

Actually, I have the latest upgrade, which is v2.20. The bugs that I had before still seem to persist. I've posted a couple of reports on their message board. So hopefully so guy in their software department is working on one of my tickets ;).

NightCreature: egad !! must download 2.20 now ..

Durafei: yes, headphones before player. a good player with ty headphones defeats the whole purpose of a good player..

DiS: yes, quality diminishes. invest some $$$ in the real hardware and you'll notice the diff and be glad you did !
Durafei
thanks for all the advice guys !

Another question then.. Should I look into buying open-air headphones or closed headphones?? According to audiophiles open-air are usually better quality, but are they better than closed for Trance music, where bass you hear is very essential.

btw, Alcode: I'm curious .. but do you prefer ATRAC3 encoding over MP3.. ? Cuz if you encode an MP3 at 192kbps in ATRAC3 where does the (extra) sound quality come from since the source is the same? Is it software driven much like EAX enhancements on SB Live! soundcards? That's what i can't really grasp. I dunno I've used an MD before and an MP3 player on good headphones and I wasn't necessarily converted over to its "sound". I have nothing against MD technology itself, infact I think it's great. My only beef is with ATRAC3 encoding. If only Sony did not discontinue DataMD. It seems like they wanted to keep the ATRAC recording firewall moreso than its apparent higher recording quality over other compression formats since they are both a portable audio manufacturer as well as a record label so they have to protect their own interests in the market. And I agree with your statement about the cosmetical differences in MD's. I know some people who get suckered into buying NetMD players at astronomical prices simply due to its 'look'. But hey I guess that's the power of marketing .. :D

I've bought a Sony Mz-R55 a few years back at pacific

My advice - get it at a place that you trust AND one that gives you a good warranty!

After about a year, the damn thing started giving me less and less time on battery life. Now I get about 20 min play on 2 FRESH AA's. Used to be hours...I got hustled!:whip: :whip:

It's pretty weird that this would happen with AA batteries...

But if it's got a rechargeable battery, you might have been getting memory effects. You have to be really careful with those, whether you're using an MD, MP3 player, or whatever you've got. One thing I like about MD's (or at least the R90, as old as it is) is that you can connect an external AA if the regular battery starts to run out... so I always wait for the internal one to die before I recharge it, knowing that I'll still be able to listen with the AA.

(Incidentally, I still get almost 10 hours off the rechargeable battery and about 15 additional hours off a single AA... I know that's nothing amazing by today's standards but 3 years ago that was a lot.)

My internal battery? I actually checked yesterday and its about 20 minutes, the 2 fress AAs are 40, sorry.

The thing is I got it for 4 bills, no tax or any charges or nothing, just when the model came out in Japan, and that was a really good deal back then.

The downside - no manufacturer's warranty in Canada/US. Really short "labour" warranty from the the chinese guy with shifty eyes I bought it from. So when I started having problems there was pretty much nothing I could do.

So finally, what I'm trying to say here - If you buy some tech, buy it at futureshop or bestbuy or some other chain like that where they'll take care of you if something happens.

I'm not normally this sensitive but what the hell does this have to do with anything? What are you implying?

I'm not implying anything. Everything I've said is explicit. I got my MD walkman in pac mall from a shop with a chinese owner with shifty eyes.

And looking back at me experience with small shops with imports, I'm recommending making your tech purchases from someone that will watch your back if something's wrong with it down the road.

And that is ALL I'm implying. Explicitly.

dEsidEL
hmmm .. if u have a digicam that uses SMC then maybe the mp3 player. otherwise u could go with the NetMD..
