REVIEW: Paul van Dyk @ Kool Haus (pg. 3)

I think I'm like everyone else who has posted here when I say that this was the most powerful set I have ever heard. From the pounding intro right through to the amazing (and pretty daring) eerie acoustic version of The Time of Our Lives that then mixed into Nothing But You. !

I saw Armin the night before, and while Armin remains my personal idol and fav DJ, he didn't even come close to matching the genious of PVD.

I can die happy now *smile*

Dammit! Dammit all. I should have been there. It was my duty to be there to witness excellence.

I read all of the reviews in hopes that the night was not that great and that I didn't miss much...I should have known better from PvD.

I will now officially stop reading the reviews from last night.

I should have been there. I am totally kicking myself.:whip:

first off, great pre meet..only minus my girlfriend because she got sick and spent the night @ a friends. How sad, fly all this way, get sick @ armin(sober) see an hour of him, and none of PvD. I feel really sorry for her.

So anyways. Mark played (IMO) a better opener last night for armin. But I didnt/couldnt stick around to hear him finish the night off. Paul graced us @ 12:30, and picked it up and slammed us around for a good 2 hours. then he got iffy ish(IE not my fave trax) and came out of the iffyness w/ As The Rush Comes, only to play some SICK SICK SICK breaks. next 2-4 tracks phat bassline breaks, that were completly new to me. Wicked. He kept up this Amazing ness until 3(supposed end time) when he dropped a vocal/acoustic version of time of our lives followed by nothing but you. And then kept going until 4.(I think)

What a in night.
4th time w/ PvD and he blew it away.

i dont know where u were standing?? but there was no room at all...it was way too packed and people kept moving around too much ..just wished people would stay in one spot and dance..instead of moving around soo much and bumping into u every 2 seconds...but i enjoyed pvd...deep dish played some nice songs...after pvd had finished..all in all and amazing weekend...but i have to say that i had a better time and enjoyed it more at AVB.
and KH is so much better than Guv, it wasnt really packed like Armin was last night. There was actually room to Dance!:D:D

need sleep. and shower, im sticking to myself(if you know what I mean)

I was standing behind him for most of his set. He was using the MAC as a seperate input but was mixing everything on the mixer. He played tons of vinyl, not too many cds.

It was an amazing night, I don't know how he does it, simply incredible..

Mr. Furious
Hearing "beautiful things" and "as the rush comes" in the same set was the highlight of my night.

I wonder if Gabriel & Dresden will ever come to town...

ok, so i stop in to guv, im listening to the first track and im thinking 'release' would mix in to this really nicely, sure enough mark plays it next, so this was a great night from the start, then mark really hypes up the crowd for pvd by his song to the siren remix (totally unexpected btw, nice job) and his intro!! very nice, love it when djs do that...

anyways pvd started off full force, i loved 'holding onto nothing' that just made my night, even tho it was the first few tracks and then he went on to play some other killers which others mentioned...

some really really ty things about kh

too crowded (not ppl standing, but too many ppl trying to pass thru, at one point i had a chain of like 25 ppl holding hands cut thru me)

- still hot, but a lot cooler than i expected, but thats ok, it started raining a little into the night so that cooled us of--oh wait

-2 gay, shirtless people asked me to grind with them, but thats cool at least they didnt grab my ass (lol mako!! hahaha)

-comic decor?? wtf i know its different but that was just stupid in my opinion

-oh and couldnt the guv wait to shoot their porn untill after the event?

Well started the weekend on thursday in ottawa at the club with some Trance and Beer.
Then Friday had some beer before going to see Armin in Ottawa. UNREAL set!

Then had some more beer before I saw Armin in Toronto on Saturday and the last 2.5 hours of his set were unbelievable! One of my Top 3 attended sets!

On Sunday night the Ottawa boys and I went to the TA meetup at the pub. Had a couple of pitchers of beer and spoke to some of the other TA's. We met quite a few people (and dind't meet a few others). Among those who I recognized that I didn't introduce myself were: StereoPrincess, Julie Spyder, and the girl in black with the socks on her arms --I've seen her pics before but couldn't remember her name.
As for the guys I didn't recognize any of you from your pictars. I guess I sorta dismiss your pictars from my memory. :nervous: Strange how I remember the girls and not the guys. :nervous:

I did manage to meet quite a few of you though. Usually I'm really bad with names but for some reason I was able to remember quite a few of them. I'd need TatGirl's photos to put a face to the name though. :nervous:

As for the actual event, I had fun. The first hour was unreal for PVD! Ch00n after ch00n! I was happy. Then it sorta sagged down and got less energetic. PVD himself looked like he was having a great time, but I just couldn't get into those tunes after the 1st hour. I knew he was spinning for 3 hours, and I kept looking at my watch waiting for 2:30. Then I realized I was a dumbass and he was on for another hour. I just wanted it to end, believe it or not.

Like I said, his first hour was unreal but it sorta tailed off. I still think PVD is #1 though, 'cuz his most recent set in Montreal is my favorite of all time!

Hahaha, of all the nights to back out on...! OK, well that proves conclusively that you weren't one of the TAs I met, at least. Couldn't hear a thing.

Anyway, for the review:

Okay, writing a long review is pointless. Let's just say that it takes a special kind of genius to get me to stop looking at my watch through his entire set and make me stay 'til 5 AM on a pitiful 3 hours' sleep from the night before. Paul delivered on the hype 100%, that's the only thing I can say that can do this night justice.

And as rarely as I do so, I have to pay a compliment to Mark for that night. His warmup set was great, and his wind-down from Paul was great too - I didn't even realize until a couple tracks later that PvD was off the decks! So great job on that, Mark.

Resnick makes a good point about people trying to pass, it really did piss me off to see 10 people holding hands pushing their way through the middle of the room (walk AROUND the dance floor for christ's sake!). But after a little while into PvD's set, I sort of lost track of that anyway, and it wasn't bugging me as much. I thought the comic decor was pretty cool, it's supposed to be reminiscent of the old rave days (this is an anniversary party, remember?)

I was planning on checking out Deep Dish, but the lineup through the orange room looked about a half hour long, and I wasn't willing to wait a half hour to hear a set that I figured I'd only listen to for 5 or 10 minutes. But I got my wish as I left, because the Guv had their doors open, and I heard a few tracks from the Dish - it wasn't bad, but I'm definitely glad I didn't skip out on any of PvD's set for them.

TA turnout was craaaaaazy... I'm already forgetting half the names of the people I met, but holy , everywhere I walked was another group of tranceaddicts! I think you could feel the vibe from it too, because the rest of the crowd was being pretty friendly (well, minus the rude-ass 50 year old Asian couples, the guy who just STOOD motionless in front of me for 45 minutes and chain-smoked, and the 6'6" 300 lb. sweaty shirtless juice heads pushing their way through the crowds).

Anyway, seeing so many familiar faces out in that massive crowd was almost surreal, and as for some of the out-of-town TAs (new and old), it's a damn shame we hardly ever see you, maybe this party will convince you to come in more often!

Killer music, killer crowd. 'Nuff said.

P.S. I just noticed that I'm the only 'tranceaddict name' on Ola's list - you forgot my name didn't you! :<

I know man. I hate that.

I'm not fond of the condensation falling off the air-conditioning either. The temperature was warm, but not execivelly warm. Hell I'm just happy they have air-conditioning at all. Aria in Montreal tries to fry you alive.

Girls doing handstands with the camera zooming in. I saw nipples and a little more in the crotch area than was probably intended to show. But who's complaining?
