The music that accompanies the rapping can barely be classified as music in most cases. The lyrics mean nothing to me for the most part. I dont try to find a deep meaning to a song by figuring out the meaning of the lyrics, I just see the lyrics as another element of the music, which in most cases make it all the better.
If I apply the same reasoning to rap, I end up with pretty much nothing. They dont sing in tune with the melody, so the words dont accompany the song in any way. Take the lyrics away from a rap song, and you're left with nothing, which i'm certainly not going to listen to.

Your first and foremost misconception is the belief that "trance" is innovative, new, and welll "original." While it may not be obvious to you, but about 90% of "trance" prouctions are rehashed incarnations of artists previous work, following a very PREDICTABLE AND FORMULAIC buildup/breakdown pattern. Note, it's not unusual for music to be somewhat "formulaic" (In fact it's a prerequisite, the other stuff is called IDM... aka NOISE :haha: )but a *lot* of trance ends up being the same minus the melody and maybe some percussive changes.
Second, you're comparing qualitatives across a broad spectrum of genres. Of course that's not going to work. Trance-Like EDM sucks because I listen to guitar driven music and there is NO guitars in trance (okay, well ocassionally, but on the whole..). See the logic flaw?
Thirdly, there are innovative artists in nearly every genre worth notice, this isn't specific to electronica. How do you think new genres are made? One way is people get tired of being restrained by the implications of a genre. Consequently, a lot of what we so broadly label "trance" might be something a bit different.
In my "opinion" the formulaic genre we so lovingly call "trance" is rather... dead. All things surrounding it however, are quite alive, and well, have borrowed elements from trance. |

I still however enjoy listening to some rap, hip hop. Outkast is a great example of a group that is constantly evolving into new things, new sounds, etc. And i must say i enjoy listening to their stuff. There are others out there that are awesome as well, K-OS (from toronto), Talib Kweli, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots.......
theres plenty of good rap, hip hop out there.... |

Rap is disrespected by ignorant white people who are jealous that it has taken over the sales of rock music and any other genre of music for that matter. NO! That wasn't a racist comment! I'm white and NO i'm not a wigger! I prefer electronica and heavy metal over everything. However, rap has been around for over 20 years now and you people just have to give in to the fact that it's not going away.
Like every other genre of music, rap also has its mainstream sub-genre. Trance has Dj Sammy, Ian van Dahl in this genre, and rap has Missy Elliot, and P. Diddy.
Now 'rap' is a general term for 'hip-hop' music. However, rap and hip-hop do have a difference. Hip-hop is more about the DJ and the beats and making people dance and have good time. The lyrics also talk about dancing and letting loose. Hip-hop is the more mainstream genre. Some artists: Missy Elliot, P. Diddy, Nelly, Busta Rhymes, the entire Cash Money crew, and I would even put 50 Cent in this genre, and many many more.
Rap, on the other hand, is more of a genre that deals with political, ethnical, and racial issues. It's more serious, with better lyrics, and usually longer runtime. However, you have rap mainstream too. Artists like Eminem, Jay-Z, Nas, and many others. Then you have the legends... Tupac, Biggie, Rakim. Behind these legends are the underground rappers. Bizzy Bone from Bone Thugs n Harmony, for example, is an incredible solo artist who never chose to go pop, and kept it underground. Canibus is just as good as any rapper out there, but he kept himself in shade too.
Another thing I want to address is the Tupac flaming here. Tupac is the best lyricist EVER! The man was a genius and simply an incredible poet. His rapping skills might have been a bit overrated, but his lyrics are everything but. Next, TUPAC DIDN'T START THE EAST VS WEST WAR! It was media who did that! Two good friends, Pac and Biggie, got in an argument and the next thing you know media is declaring an all out war between the coasts so they can have something to report on. Tupac did get shot 5 times in Biggies studio, and lived. He, however, had speculations whether Biggie knew that he was going to be hit on, but refused to inform him. , i would think the same thing. I'm in your house, getting shot at.. and you don't know who, how, or why it happened? Pac has been gone for 7 years now but he left so much material that more albums came out after his death, then during the time he was alive. He was a hard worker and a great leader. You should go see Tupac: Resurrection, it started playing in theaters this weekend here in USA. It talks about Pac and his life, and the culture itself. Go see it.
Lastly, quit flaming rap/hip-hop. Listen to good artists and you will notice that there is so much good in it. The reason you guys are flaming it is because you are listening to the 'cheese' side of it.
