Your first and foremost misconception is the belief that "trance" is innovative, new, and welll "original." While it may not be obvious to you, but about 90% of "trance" prouctions are rehashed incarnations of artists previous work, following a very PREDICTABLE AND FORMULAIC buildup/breakdown pattern. Note, it's not unusual for music to be somewhat "formulaic" (In fact it's a prerequisite, the other stuff is called IDM... aka NOISE :haha: )but a *lot* of trance ends up being the same minus the melody and maybe some percussive changes. |
I was talking about how the music evolves. Yes many artists find their own specifc sound and use it more than once, but they dont (generally) use the exact same sound, they change it/modify it. Over time an artists music progresses from one form to another. With rap, there is no music. There's just some simple beats that they talk over. There doesnt seem (to me, anyway) to be any kind of evolution. The atists dont change their style, they just re-use the same old drum pattern until they go out of fashion with the masses, and then they're forgotten.

Second, you're comparing qualitatives across a broad spectrum of genres. Of course that's not going to work. Trance-Like EDM sucks because I listen to guitar driven music and there is NO guitars in trance (okay, well ocassionally, but on the whole..). See the logic flaw? |
I think what you're saying there is that different types of music have different things that make them good genres. Like you say, for anybody who listens to rock music (or any guitar driven style) EDM may seem rather crap. That's fair enough, but you can at least respect other genres because you know that the things that make your music sound good to you will be different to the things that make other's music sound good to them.
With rap, I cant see anything good about the music. There's nothing that I feel I can respect it for. So in my eyes, that makes it a bad genre.

Thirdly, there are innovative artists in nearly every genre worth notice, this isn't specific to electronica. How do you think new genres are made? One way is people get tired of being restrained by the implications of a genre. Consequently, a lot of what we so broadly label "trance" might be something a bit different. |
You're partly right there, but I dont think that making a piece of music that would be classified under a certain genre would restrict it necessarily. It may with some genres, but not with trance. How much rock music has got a main melody synthesized on a computer?? If I asked my rock-music-fan mates, they say "None of them, you ponce!" Yet there are trance songs (which wouldn't ordinarily have guitars in them) that have plenty of guitar sounds. That doesnt mean that it cant be classified as trance though, does it??

In my "opinion" the formulaic genre we so lovingly call "trance" is rather... dead. All things surrounding it however, are quite alive, and well, have borrowed elements from trance. |
Trance is in no way dead. IMO it just gets better and better. But when I look at other genres, I dont see that same evolution that I do with trance. Rap, I think, is one of the worst genres. Except for pop, but dont get me started on that...

You can hardly say that it has no musical value compared to trance. I love trance, but its not like every song sounds totally different. To an outsider, it would sound VERY repetitive. Also, how can you write off the lyrics. The whole point of rap, its main focus, is the lyrics, stupid.
I hate people who are far too ignorant and elitist to respect other genres of music. You should broaden your horizons. |
Oh dear, my friend. I never for an instant said that I dont repect other genres, quite the opposite in fact. But rap, as I've said before, I just cant find anything in it that deserves my respect. Again, as I've said before, I dont look for a deep meaning to a song by listening to the lyrics. I'd rather look upon the lyrics as another element of the melody, that accompanies the main tune. As there isn't a 'main tune' within the vast majority of rap songs, the words can hardly accompany it, now can they??
I simply dont think that there's any genre of music out there that comes close to trance in any way, shape or form. And it's not like I dont listen to any other genres. I'm pounded with the lot of 'em day in, day out, which is how i'm able to make these comparisons. If I didnt have any grounds on which to base my opinions, I wouldnt say anything, so i'd hardly consider myself to be ignorant, elitist or stupid.

| The only reason tupac still has cds coming out is because its songs he recorded before he died. He had soo many songs recorded or like half done. Thats why a lot of his new cds have many compilations, so they can fill up the songs he didnt finish. |

I'll put this as simply as I can. Rap is all about the message in the lyrics and how artistically and cleverly this message is presented, like rhyming. Yes its true the rap that is on the radio and TV have lyrics about wealth and women. This is the rap you hear.
However there exists a world of rap that none of you have heard. This is called underground rap. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the term underground. In underground rap, these rappers portray their views, feelings, opinions, and criticisms on society or any number of real things people face on a daily basis.
In short:
Rap you hear = commercial = pimps and hoes
Rap you dont hear = underground = artistic meaning
Which is the same thing as:
Trance you hear = commercial = cheese
Trance you dont hear = underground = quality |

Also I'd like to say that you are not expected to like every type of music. If you dont like rap music, fine good for you. You dont understand it, it doesnt appeal to you. Just ignore it and move on with your life. Why feel the need to bash something you have no idea about?
This is the case for rock music. I dont like rock music at all. But I dont know about it. Logically I cant insult what I have no knowledge of, and therefore you will never find me bashing rock. |

I'm not a huge rap/hip hop fan, but there are a few songs here and there that I like.
I find it really funny how all the rap haters in this thread post dumb like "omfg!! raps suxxors!! bling bling yo!!1!" and make complete asses of themselves, and then you have the more open-minded people who actually post more than a sentence arguing that rap/hip hop is good if you listen to the right stuff. Then I see more ignorance in this thread when some fools decide to bash everything that isn't trance.
Honestly, people, get the over yourselves!! Trance is great, but it isn't the only genre of music out there that's "quality" and innovative. It also isn't the only type of music that can reach your emotions. Nor is it the only genre with a "hidden message" within the songs.

thats cool and all, but you're taking an approach to other genre's like you do to trance. If anyone approaches trance like, say...rock, then they won't like it because there are completely different elements that make up a certain tune. In trance, lyrics mean little. They're just there to accompany the melody like you said so yourself. But in genre's such as hip hop or rock where lyrics are the main focus, they actually do mean something. So if somebody listens to trance expecting deeper vocals (and just a heavier emphasis on vocals all together) then they'll walk away dissappointed and thinking it sucks.
Now, with all that said; HOUSE MUSIC OWNS ALL ;) |

thats your mistake, RAP is different then most genres of music
rap is all about the lyrics, the beat in the backround is just there to acompany the lyrics, not the other way around |

If you decide to put any kind of instrument or lyric into a piece of music, it should have some meaning! Even if they only sing 20words in a song, it does not make it less important, it is the message brought through to the listener. If the lyrics are so important, why don't they make some decent ones? I still claim that they are just:

Rap is disrespected by ignorant white people who are jealous that it has taken over the sales of rock music and any other genre of music for that matter. NO! That wasn't a racist comment! I'm white and NO i'm not a wigger! I prefer electronica and heavy metal over everything. However, rap has been around for over 20 years now and you people just have to give in to the fact that it's not going away.
Like every other genre of music, rap also has its mainstream sub-genre. Trance has Dj Sammy, Ian van Dahl in this genre, and rap has Missy Elliot, and P. Diddy.
Now 'rap' is a general term for 'hip-hop' music. However, rap and hip-hop do have a difference. Hip-hop is more about the DJ and the beats and making people dance and have good time. The lyrics also talk about dancing and letting loose. Hip-hop is the more mainstream genre. Some artists: Missy Elliot, P. Diddy, Nelly, Busta Rhymes, the entire Cash Money crew, and I would even put 50 Cent in this genre, and many many more.
Rap, on the other hand, is more of a genre that deals with political, ethnical, and racial issues. It's more serious, with better lyrics, and usually longer runtime. However, you have rap mainstream too. Artists like Eminem, Jay-Z, Nas, and many others. Then you have the legends... Tupac, Biggie, Rakim. Behind these legends are the underground rappers. Bizzy Bone from Bone Thugs n Harmony, for example, is an incredible solo artist who never chose to go pop, and kept it underground. Canibus is just as good as any rapper out there, but he kept himself in shade too.
Another thing I want to address is the Tupac flaming here. Tupac is the best lyricist EVER! The man was a genius and simply an incredible poet. His rapping skills might have been a bit overrated, but his lyrics are everything but. Next, TUPAC DIDN'T START THE EAST VS WEST WAR! It was media who did that! Two good friends, Pac and Biggie, got in an argument and the next thing you know media is declaring an all out war between the coasts so they can have something to report on. Tupac did get shot 5 times in Biggies studio, and lived. He, however, had speculations whether Biggie knew that he was going to be hit on, but refused to inform him. , i would think the same thing. I'm in your house, getting shot at.. and you don't know who, how, or why it happened? Pac has been gone for 7 years now but he left so much material that more albums came out after his death, then during the time he was alive. He was a hard worker and a great leader. You should go see Tupac: Resurrection, it started playing in theaters this weekend here in USA. It talks about Pac and his life, and the culture itself. Go see it.
Lastly, quit flaming rap/hip-hop. Listen to good artists and you will notice that there is so much good in it. The reason you guys are flaming it is because you are listening to the 'cheese' side of it.
