but it is! you know that's what Tiesto's all about, and I actually prefer that approach to mixing than anything else when we're talking about trance mixed with other styles of edm. It may be non-traditional but there's actually a logic behind it all, trust me. this kind of purist criticism against Tiesto happens against a certain figure in history whenever the cycle of music evolution is turning, I finally understood what's going on.

Actually Ferrys Concert, including remaking Galaxia for it was as well planned out as any of those, as was his energy 2000 set and other dj's who've pulled off equally as good sets in terms of planning & mixing include Tom Harding, just about every DJ Hype set, DJ Sy, Sasha, Westbam, PVD.
And beatmatching is a big thing, the best planned out set can be ruined by poor matching, and a set thats not as 'special' in its layout but mixed well can also be more enjoyable. Tijs is no better than any of the names I Mentioned above, and you can add the 'old' oakey, tony de vit, pete tong, carl cox, john digweed, nick warren etc into people who could plan, mix, match and be as 'constructive' In 20 years time Tiesto will just be a 2-3 year fad, where a lot of these DJs have done it for longer at the highest level & will still be there when Tijs fades :) ;) |
I deeply disagree about Ferry's Energy 2000 or his Concert even coming close to any of the sets I mentioned. The other djs you mentioned well, fair enough, but their styles and genres are way too different to be compared to the Dutch trancers, it's a whole different approach to mixing and set construction, PvD included.
If Tiesto will just be a 2-3 year fad in 20 years then so will all the people you mentioned. You're from a country with great club edm culture and maybe have not had the chance to travel around the world and witness the global influence that Tiesto's sound has had in every hemisphere and continent. Ferry contributed to that in being a part of Tijs' formation, Oakey did as well in 1999, but Tiesto is a leading voice of edm and trance right now, you can't deny that. The fact is that in 20 years we don't really know what will be going on, but i'm willing to bet with you that Tijs will be a widely-respected and studied cult icon by then. |

Slam the fader across and hope for the best? Bull. There is nothing technically decent about his mixing at all. He is uncreative, and still hasn't mastered simple beatmatching. And the structuring of his sets are abysmal. Tune wise, he is not my style but that is not something to slate a DJ over. What bugs me is that everyone cannot see past the tunes he plays for just 1 second to see how he is at mixing.

As for the thread starter. You are a complete joke. You're not even what I would call a proper Tiesto fan. You clearly go around licking his arse whether Tiesto does good or bad, and it's that kind of blind loyality that makes boards like this so . |

How do you explain his Magik 6, Energy 2000 livesets (etc. etc.) then with a nearly perfect beatmatching and a great mixing overall ?! |

Well you are right, there are times when his mixing has been of a good standard. However Magik 6 is a bad example, because it was a planned set. Of course the mixing was going to be good. But I was speaking on a larger scale. Not just the odd set where his mixing happens to be good, ie: Energy 2000, etc. |

i would rather he like any normal dj would mix the similar tunes together and blend the genre's rather than whack in passive resistance next to urban train next to pure thrust (nu nrg remix) tbh.... |

Yes, I reckon that he sometimes does ty fader-slamer mixes but that's certainly not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about brilliant mixes such as in DD2002 where he uses Plastikman-Spastik as extended intro to Alibi-Eternity or in Impulz 2002 when he mixed for over 3 minutes Umek-Lanicor into In My Memory. That's the violent contrasting that I'm talking about, which is very innovative and creative.
The structuring of his sets are the standard for Dutch trance, going back to Forbidden Paradise 3, Magik 1 and his debut Innercity 99 set. You'd have to be tonedeaf to say that structuring in his notable sets are abysmal. |

FFS don't you people ever find a different subject to argue on? Flogging this same old dead horse is really getting tiresome.

this a set is another example of how radical Tiesto-style mixing works.
Listen to the last few tracks where he does the crazy thing of mixing Taub 2002 into Jericho-Personal Reflexion. That mix did wonders in the dancefloor, it was such an adrenaline rush, but it violates all the edm mixing standards, which is why i find it so fascinating. |
