It seems nr1 dj's always get a lot of bashing..
Where is the time when i would yell: 'Oakey rules!' and 50% TA would come in and say 'oakenfold sucks', 'is a sellout', 'his mixing and choice of records suck'

With every other dj that will go high in the polls and/or charts we will see the same thing.
Schultz/Zabiela/Ferry Corsten/whoever.. I don't care.
I'm a huge Tiesto fan, he got me into trance/EDM. and now i also like a lot of other DJ's and styles.
Tiesto is still nr1 in live-sets and then i mean actually being there, the whole atmosphere.. he knows what the audience wants and NOT what the radiolisteners/downloaders want!
I'd rather go to a party where the atmosphere is good, the records are good and the mixing average then a party where the mixing is topclass but the records suck..
Atmosphere.. its all about that. The feeling you get at it. |

Unstructured mixes are and tiesto is the master of bollox crap sets and mixes, he tries ridiculously hard things not coz he is trying to be creative but because he is usually too ed to realise it wont work. On average his mixing isnt on par with someone who's had a set of decks for a week. There are many djs now who can mix varied styles really well like john askew who manages to mix radical track selection in a way that works but tiesto just picks half decent tunes from his box in any order and mixes them crap coz he's already got his rep and no one will see past it. He may have mixed good before and still can when i've seen him sometimes but on average on a big lineup he is usually the worst dj of the night always and is made to look foolish by the other djs only getting away with it by dropping a few popular trance floor fillers and playing on his brand. |

We obviously have different appreciation values, that's it. Musically-speaking you're obviously a reactionary, not that there's anything wrong with that. I hear some things that you don't, and my judgement doesn't have anything to do with his selection of anthems. Over the last 4 years I've seen Tiesto over twenty times, a few times he was but most of the times he impressed me greatly for strictly musical reasons (which I won't go over again because some people here don't like reading about music theory that they can't comprehend, if you're interested search for it). On the other hand, whenever I see djs that you like (ie. Ferry and Armin) i have fun but I never experience any trascendental musical experience because I sincerely believe that they are just not on the same artistic level. Tiesto is the only Dutch trance dj out of that generation that I can stomach. But I listen to many other genres more than anything nowadays, and I admire other djs just as much. But in Dutch trance? No one comes close to Tijs' depth. That's my opinion, there's no truth anywhere on these debate over values and appreciation. |

Being # 1 requires a balance between two big variables, which are 1)being musically talented and 2)being talented as a DJ. Now musically talented means having a background of mint productions/remixes/collaborations/albums/compilations while being talented as a DJ means not only having skills (beatmathcing, effects, etc) but also having an excellent taste for music, an excellent charisma and for that an excellent interaction with the crowd (atmosphere).
This Artist/DJ balance is what the majority of people appreciates in a DJ, specially in the DJ Mag top 100 (Not everyone from the thousands of voters are professional DJs and appreciate Zabiela amazing but irrelevant skills) and for that reason, Tiesto, who not only accomplished that Artist/DJ equilibrium but often reaches perfection in every aspect of the above, has been number 1 for two years in a row (and much probably three;)) and will be remembered as the trance genius.
Now you will always find a little group of anti-Tiesto obsessed haters (i.e. Ste, whose hate towards Tiesto led him to make that animation). This is normal here as they think being different is cool and for that, they will always bash the great DJs, so the best you can do is to ignore these individuals. |

We're not obsessed, we're more open minded about our music than you are, me & ste for example like techtrance, hard trance, trance itself, psy, acid, ed up stuff, we just dont like a guy who's more overrated than that Israeli footballer m0sh wanks over :p |

| Tiesto's alright, although he could've done a better job at mixing his Nyana CD. Not to mention include the single "Nyana" in the ing album sampler like he should've. |

The reason i dont get a transcendental response from seeing someone like tiesto is the fact that he does things like get so ed he cant mix and has to literally and i mean literally jus putc each record on seperately and press start on the deck coz he's mashed to bits whish is disrespectful to the people who pay to see him. Yeh i do like to go and see ferry because he has structure and when he plays a different style he progresses to it he doesnt just throw in a random techno track that won't work he'll build up to play some techno. I can't wait till next year when finally i someone will knock tiesto off his undeserved pirch and then his fans will realise he isnt no.1 at all and that its a popularity contest and he wins the dj mag top 100 coz of his productions not his djing. |
