and you know the biggest irony behind all this was that the city was trying to stop raves from going on in city owned property because they felt they were "unsafe". and now look at what we have .. a packed Guvernment on a Saturday nite with an accident waiting to happen ..

one can argue that these events at Guv would have taken place anyways, but atleast having massives at the BLC still offers an alternative to those not willing to take the chance of being put in an unsafe environment..

Only difference is that if something bad happens at the Guv, they can hold individuals accountable. When things happened at the BLC, the city was held accountable for allowing such things to go on.

It's all about who blame can be layed onto.

Ya think back to the times when the fire alarm went off at the BLC (freakin and new years 2001), they were able to clear the place out quickly and orderly.. if a fire alarm went off at the Guv, well.. it'd be a mad house.

Atleast room2dance has done something more then bitch about how crowded the place is. That takes balls man, good job!

One thing that i don't get is ppl bitching that "if Guv closes, they've lost the best place for Int DJ talent".

Please, if anything Guv has screwed over the local scene by raising the financial bar to the point other clubs can't compete. Mike Greco (former System promoter) often called it the Deathstar, with it's superlaser of cash it pointed @ the other clubs. After a DJ plays Guv, they sure as hell aren't likely to take much less $$ to play a smaller venue here, or often have contracts SOLELY with GUV for recording/appearances.

It's only a testament to the great variety of partiers and ppl running the scene here that we have what we have. Toronto has a good thing going, but one that could explode even more if the Guv weren't around.

That's ing HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Another good thing about clubs in the US... if something like that happened, they would rush the kid to the hospital! Not leave him behind some dumpster!!!! What if the kid OD'd to the point that god forbid, he died????

erm...what about all the that happened at twilight in NYC?

Yeah - but this is what might happen as a result of his/her actions.

room2dance: You don't speak for me. I hope your seemingly "righteous" actions don't ruin Toronto's best spot for seeing the world's greatest DJs.

RJ, I'm really surprised that you value seeing a good DJ for cheap over the safety of 1200 or so people.

I've always said I hope Guv gets shut down. Not only would it put this issue to rest, but it would allow other clubs and promoters room to breathe a bit. It is not the international talent that flows through the city that keeps the scene alive, it's the people who go out to hear them, the vibe at parties, the diversity of events and crowds. By this measure, I think our scene is getting stale...probably 80% of international DJs come to play at Guv and System. (and you know my feelings on both)

It's the small parties, the one-time events put on by promoters, that really take into account what the SCENE wants. They have one chance to make their event successful, so they're going to try and make that event perfect! Unlike Guv, that knows they have an oblivious crowd every weekend, or system that is so money hungry that they can't even close their doors during renovations.

some of you younger peeps (lol @ me saying that hehe) might find this hard to believe but GUV circa 99/00 was a ROCKIN party. And im not talking about for special events or whatever, im talking about Saturday nights with Mark Oliver. That room had a great party vibe, people would actually going off to Marks music, not like what it seems like today. Girls used to go there and the crowd wasnt as sketchy either. NOW? ugggggh I dont even wanna talk about that place...the place is a total writeoff...

IMO

Blame that On Progg!

wear that into the guv, take the gasoline, pour it on the cement along a back wall with no flamable materials (so that when the gas is gone, the fire is gone) then light it.

see the panic that ensues and how many people are seriously hurt, if not killed. Ive thought of doing what room2dance is doing myself, but know that Im not going to be in TO long enuf to follow thru on it.
If they have to get shut down because they endanger people, then so be it. I could really care less. I dont support guv unless Im really dying to see somebody, and then I raelise that I really might die. Its not hard to get trampled to death in a crowd that size.

Hey we can do that in any club..It'll defenitely create panic....

I'd tend to agree with you and I'm really not trying to defend the Guv, but something just occurred to me: do you think that maybe the Guv already has such a stranglehold on Toronto's scene that most DJs would refuse to spin for smaller clubs/lower prices even if the Guv was shut down?

I'm not sure about the economics of this. Obviously, if the Guv were shut down, the situation would stabilize eventually and other clubs would start bringing in talent - but part of me wonders if that would take, say, a few weeks... or a few years.

Not that I care either way, since there's always System, Boa, Element, Viva, and so on, so there would still be a scene, it just might thin out a bit in the short term.

Even if that happened though, I think it would still be nothing but beneficial in the long term. We have a scene here because of demand, not supply.

If u are talking about Twilo in NYC... why do u think they closed it down?

I'm telling you... clubs in LA are so much more strict. When I was in TO a few months ago, I was shocked out how things were run there. From being able to smoke ciggs inside, to being able to smoke weed inside, to how PACKED Guv got in Oakenfold's room. Things like that are unheard of out here!!!!!!

bucky
Twilo was closed down for A LOT more reasons than overcrowding.

And the differences.... that's Canada vs the United States. More relaxed vs strict guidelines.
sExY pErSiAn
Ya, I didn't say overcrowding was the reason for it being closed down. You're right, there were many reasons... drugs probably being the main thing.
