It depends on what you think the Democrats stand for. Sen. Miller is closer to Kennedy in 1960 than the Democratic party of 2004. He was one of the first to use the phrase, "the South didn't leave the Democratic party -- the Democratic party left the South."
But if it wasn't for Zell Miller, there would be no James Carville, and probably no Bill Clinton. Back in 1989, Zell Miller drafted an obscure strategist to run his Democratic campaign for Governor in Georgia. James Carville got Miller elected, and Clinton took note. The connection is how Zell Miller got to do the keynote at Clinton's nomination.
It's funny how the Democrats have tried to completely disown Zell Miller today. Terry McAuliffe has been saying all day that "Zell never went to any of the Democratic caucus meetings - we never knew he was a Democrat." That's a load of BS, Terry. Zell Miller was a strong member of the party for decades, helping to get your political bitch Clinton elected, and then you guys went and kicked him out of the caucus meetings in 2001 when he decided that supporting the President was more important than scoring cheap political points in the Senate. |

BTW occrider, IMO Bush is over spending to bankrupt SS and other social government programs that the right hates so much. Becuase anything social = communism, right? :mad: |

Report from The Front:
Things are certainly suspicious here in New York. Yesterday, I saw an unidentified man enter a dimly lit building with a green sign marked "Starbucks," surely up to no good. He appeared to give money in exchange for something dangerous in a cup. I know it was dangerous because steam was coming from a hole that was burned in the lid. The streets have occasionally been populated by a strange species, identifiable from the average New York resident only by a cloth necklace that dangles some sort of plastic pendant.
Seriously, the sidewalks are much clearer than usual, unless you wander onto a protest street. Union Square has been interesting. It's close to my apartment, so I walk over regularly in hopes that something interesting will be happening. Usually it's just a filthy, unkempt guy castigating the Bush administration and society with broad generalizations of dubious veracity. I've noticed if there is a protest, people hocking anti-Bush apparel and paraphenalia show up in minutes. They stir a similar revulsion in me that I'm sure Southerners must have felt for carpetbaggers.
People are being arrested faster than you can blink. Police are using "loitering" as an excuse to haul off groups of hundreds. God bless America, just cause and democracy. |

I wouldn't place much faith in that theory. More than likely he's a poor fiscal manager who thinks the treasury is a bottomless pit. It's somewhat convoluted to believe that Bush is spending more money now to spend less later on. Particularly since social security and medicare is not something that is all or nothing. If the government couldn't afford to pay it in its entirety it would restructure the programs to pay what it could afford. Therefore your net loss is still the same.
Ultimately social security and medicare are forsaken institutions no matter what. It's simply an inevitability. The actuarial deficit, or the amount of money we would need on hand TODAY to cover the cash shortfall of social security over the next 75 years is $3.5 trillion. This is just social security ... factor in medicare and add $15.6 trillion. Next, the fact that the "trust funds" are not social security and medicare savings but simply treasury bonds and add $1.6 trillion. Then if you want to factor in an unlimited time horizon so that the debt problems aren't passed from our children to our grandchildren you would need to add another $24 trillion. Therefore, what would be required to save social security and medicare is $45 trillion on hand TODAY. FYI the nation's net worth is $42 trillion. So wave goodbye to social security and medicare as we know it ladies and gentlemen. They're only around for a few more years ... and there's nothing a democrat or a republican can do about it, except spend more money as they've been doing. |
