I probably should have mentioned earlier.. but it's nice to see in the coming weeks some other promoters in Montreal bringing in some solid techno!
Slobodan (Sweden) this Friday, Alex Bau (Germany) @ Gravity (RM party) and some headliners @ Circus.. filling the voids nicely. ;) |

Were we at the same party?
I thought she stepped up and made everyone forget about the "world's number 1 DJ" who was playing there just minutes earlier.
Probably one of the better sets I've heard from her, especially towards the end, when there was fewer "commercial" techno tracks.
It's too bad that Aria isn't booking techno DJs like they used to, but now in TO we have Boa that is trying to up the ante of techno DJs in Canada a little bit. |

Mauro Picotto January 30th
Green Velvet February 13th
Jeff Mills March 19th
Laurent Garnier April 23rd

Green Velvet August 20th
Chris Liebing September 24th
Marco V October 15th
Marco Carola November 26th
1 out of town tehno dj every month is not so bad I think and these dj's are all really good.
Plus there is techno at Aria every friday nights and you have to consider that we had many cancellations with techno dj's, like Dave Clarke, Carl Cox etc...
When there is too much guest dj's of the same style, the product is not at the same level anymore. Some dj's can barely bring 100-200 people more to the club so imagine if there is 2-3 techno headliners during the month? The club will loose money and wil not bring these dj's anymore.
As for trance dj's:
Ferry Corsten March 12th
Johan Gielen May 21st
Tiësto June 11th
Armin Van Buuren July 2nd
Paul Oakenfold November 26th
1/2 of the numbers of techno dj's that played Aria in 2004.
But 2005 will be a great year!
As for Barbara making everyone forget about Tiësto, humm not really sure. 3/4 of the people were there for him if it's not 4/5. I can imagine people had fun and enjoyed Barbara set alot but Tiësto is completely in a different league when we are talking about popularity and the ambiance he bring to a club or party. I have seen crazy nights with Tiësto playing, no other dj's can bring that. |

You think that many were there just for him? because most people stayed for her set too.
I'm biased though, Tiesto bored me to tears that night, I thought it was the worst set I've ever heard from him. But maybe that is what trance is like now - I haven't listened to a lot of it in years.
Tiesto does bring a lot of energy to a party, but I think a lot of it has to do with trance in general being popular, not just him. |

Skipper, trust me, all these big trance names bring a good party but Tiësto is just in a different league.
He's number 1 and the second is like 10th! Nobody is close to him.
And btw, the guy is really nice! |

I will trust you biggy, because I am never going to another trance night so long as I live so I can't find out for myself! :p |

Just so it's clear, you can justify the techno bookings now (and I consider Marco V *not* a techno dj, no matter what records he has in his box) at a rate of one a month or whatever, but it's not like I'm comparing the lineups to the stuff they book overseas or anything, in fact, I am comparing it to previous years with Aria, and the Montreal scene in general like when Sona was booking techno all the time.
I know it's pretty obvious your club isn't bringing in the same numbers that it used to, so from a business sense, it's evident why the techno bookings have suffered... doesn't mean as a patron I have to like it, I just hope some other promoters step up and start booking techno more regularly, and from the looks of it, Circus is *trying* to do just that. Don't get me wrong, I love nothing more than a good techno show @ Aria for so many reasons, but I'll go where the bookings are! always have, always will. |

Krinker.. I have felt the 'love' of a good trance night... and I agree, it is a good e-tard vibe! ;)
but... as much as this is so not a scientific poll, hehe, I have talked to half a dozen or so tech heads here in Ottawa who are annoyed Carola is the same night as Oakenfold, maybe if I lived in Montreal and set my alarm clock for Carola's set it wouldn't be so bad, but we're not making the trip from Ottawa for that.. A roadtrip is in the works for Toronto so we'll see.
I didn't comment when it was Barbara & Tiesto because I normally wouldn't have an issue with different headliner genres in the same night, only when the techno bookings are scarce. ;)
Trance may bring it's own kind of vibe, but a good 'techno' party does too. |

I was really surprised about tiesto's pairing with MB, but people I know wanted to hear both, so I went...
but god help me, it was the longest three hours of my life waiting for him to finish and the techno to start.
trance + techno is not a good match, IMO. techno and house? yes. |
