Education is freedom from ignorance.

But some people are perfectly happy living in ignorance (we'll save religion for another thread) and it's completely their choice. Ultimately, nobody owns you, so you only have to blame yourself for whatever happens in your life. Whether that means people can look at your life and know how not to live or whether people will marvel at your accomplishments will be the result of both your choices and, subsequently, theirs. It's easy to say that you don't care what others think, but since when has whatever's easiest been the right and productive thing to do?

A High School Diploma is not a guarantee - if anything, it's just sort of a buffer to fall back on in life. Many people who even get their High school diplomas are complete idiots, they just showed up to school for long enough and did what they were told and were eventually rewarded with a little piece of paper that says that somebody, somewhere, deemed them as a number fit to be classified in the 'graduated' category. Don't allow people to deify it simply for what it is. What you can do about it is work hard to dig yourself out of whatever mess you've created for yourself. You seem to have experienced one of life's lows, even if it was of your own doing, it's never too late to create a success-story out of your educational experience. What value you could have on finishing school is dependent on what value you and you, alone, place upon it. Nobody is going to force you to do it now because nobody honestly cares - your teachers, your peers, your fellow TrancEaddicts, your parents, etc... only YOU can make the decision to free yourself from ignorance.

Your educational career is far from over if you have the will to go to college and beyond. Do it for yourself, if anything. Don't do it for your parents, your teachers, your fellow TrancEaddicts, your boss, your career, your potential salary...Do it for freedom. Or don't do it all - as I said, nobody truly cares.

I agree with what you said but,

Education (edit: in school) isn't freedom from ignorance. It's just a tool to get you to use money, and that's what success is to most people. I'm pretty sure you've been to school and you've seen your fair share of people who are ignorant.

Of course - but as I said, many people are perfectly happy living in ignorance.

High School *is* a place for learning, but only if you want to learn. There is just SO much in life that people look over or look past or totally ignore altogether, it's almost aggravating to watch. If you're not learning in school, don't blame the school, or the teachers, or the county standards, or all the white people with their white tests, blame yourself. It's totally your choice whether you want to learn or not - just know that the more you learn and know, the more freedom you have in this world and this society. Nobody said it would be fair or easy. The resources are there, you just have to look for them. I know scholarly pursuits aren't everyone's game, nor is freedom, for that matter, but if you expect to be successful, you must learn to live to your potential, and that means working hard and having perspective.

Education is totally what you make of it. As I said, a diploma is no guarantee - nor is an education a guarantee towards success, it is merely a means to and endless state of mind. Success is not necessarily measured by money or fame, and you know it. All it takes to change the apparently fallacy is your perspective on the matter.

If you really want to learn, then school holds you back because in the time you spend sitting in classing "learning" something you already know or doing boring assignments to "demonstrate" your knowledge is time you could have spent reading about something new or practicing something you want to get better at.

The importance of school IMO isn't so much "learning," it's about demonstrating a work ethic and a capacity to meet (quite easy) standards.
