I overanalyzed the question as well (mine, that is). I figured that the love of your life was also your best friend who just happened to be an old lady. So I said there was room enough for just one person, and that's all you really needed because they were one and the same. After all, how many different people reside within you?
Despite my blatant philosophical musings, I was wrong. :stongue:
UWM was very, very close,Gholy Host pretty much touched on the answer, while eye_03 sort of stated it the most directly. The answer they were looking for was:
You get your best friend to take your car and drive the old lady to shelter while staying out in the rain with the love of your life.
Once I heard this, it seemed to be the most natural thing to do anyways - I felt that if I were actually in this situation, I would have probably lent the car to my love and had her drive away with the old woman - my best friend (who would most likely be a guy anyways) would have understood what was important. As men, most of us feel a sense of duty for this situation, and I don't mind getting wet anyways. :p
But alas, it makes way more sense to me now - the love of your life should be your equal; devotion does not necessarily mean servitude, and if she is truly worth it, she would rather have walked a million miles in the rain with you than have been away from your side the entire time just as you would do the same for her. :)
Pepsi wants this sort of thing from their executives, I'm sure. Not necessarily the reasoning relying on core values, but the ability to make the best of a situation dispite the worst circumstances. This is why it would probably be a red flag for them had somebody said, "I pull out my cell-phone and call the police to come help me." I would imagine this would be quite parallel to needless expenditure of company resources.
Effeciency is a very cool instict to have. ;) |
oh those tricky tricky pepsico executives. i know i would've failed the test :p |

ok believe it or not, (probably most of you won't since i have the uneducated, cokehead rep on TA) but that definitely crossed my mind..except for the old lady being the girlfriend. i thought, "well for me, the love of my life would be my best friend..." but then i didn't know about the old lady, so i didn't post it.
oh well. i was on the right track for a second there. |

There is a mute who wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth, he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.
Now if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses,
how should he express himself? |
Ha ha. He should tell the guy he wants some freakin sunglasses. |

Ok, here's a another one, slightly different...
If you've heard this one before, don't blurt out an answer.
[hypothetically speaking]
You are driving on a highway one night while the rain is coming down in sheets; the storm has absolutely no intention of letting up, and by the sound of the thunder, it's only rising in intensity. There are 3 people by the side of the road: a very old woman, your best friend, and the love of your life. You only have room enough in your car to carry one passenger...
So who do give a ride to? The old woman runs the chance of dying beause she's really quite frail, your best friend is someone whom you can never just leave out in the rain, and the love of your life will never forgive you for ditching him/her out in the middle of a storm. What is your choice? |
I'd find a way to talk to them about it and take their input in the decision. If the old lady might die, the others should understand. If I didn't have that option, I would pick the love of my life. Can't mess that up. |

That's the thing though: they were hiring execs, not people to stock the vending machines. :clown:
They wanted people to reason out of the standard A,B,C approach and just think outside of the box. You may have to take some initial loss with standing in the rain, but in the long run, it's what's best for a relationship (best for a company). If you drove-off, away from your best friend and the old lady, they might just die out there. It may seem like it's worth it immediately, but it's just not how business is done for companies that want to last for a very long time.
There's a lot of parallels with economics and love. I think women know this more than men  (take from this what you will)
