I usually mix out of whatever the DJ before me is playing to keep the momentum going. If I'm following PVD, and he's banging out hard trance, then I'll start with some hard trance.

Last night, Filo & Peri ended their set with house, so I started mine with a house track which mixed out of their set without interrupting the flow. Many times people see a DJ behind the decks and it looks like he/she is playing, but in actual fact is waiting for the final track of the previous DJ's set to end.

The majority of the regular weekly crowd at Viva is fairly open-minded musically, but over the past few months have been demanding much more house and techno than in years past. Contrary to popular belief, most of the regular Viva crowd do not favour a whole night of trance. If the pure trance heads showed up en masse every week, I would stick to playing trance all night.

From what I heard of them, Filo & Peri were playing really well and I look forward to hearing them again.

Jayx1 did an awesome job (as usual) on the BIG lightshow.

I thought that when I walked in & heard DJ Key spin Trance then THAT was gonna be the format for the whole night...oh well...Trance is my #1 fave followed by Techno & then Hard House...I know that VIVA spins mostly House thats why I don't go there all the time and again thought it was a Trance nite so thats why I went...I still had alot of fun & forgot to mention that a HUGE thanks goes out to George for introducing me to DJ Key;).I am REALLY really tempted to go to VIVA for the New Years party to hear him spin along with Deko-ze & Addy & others but I don't know yet :( because my friends want to go to another party instead...

As for the lighting in VIVA ...well its the best light show that I've seen outside of the Guv...awesome lasers:eyespop:

BTW that Trance version of "Silent Night" that Key spun was a great send-off:)

That's fine, you're the DJ, and a great one at that. Play whatever you want to :). I wouldn't EXPECT you to play trance all night when you know there's a demand for house in a club, and there's only been 4 or 5 tracks throughout the night. I actually don't even mind house music in general. I'm just not a fan of house after the halfway point of any night. It's not hard enough for me, and I like tunes and melodies in my music. If I've just listened to 4 or 5 hours of trance, and then house kicks in, it puts me to sleep. And if I'm suddenly feeling tired, I don't feel like being in the club anymore, and I go home.

I guess my point is, I personally feel like a night should have a general flow to it. And if there's going to a mixture of genres like house/trance/techno for example. House, being the softer genre as far as I can tell, should be the one that starts the night. Then the meaty goodness of the night should be the trance/techno until the night is coming to a close, then back to house to bring the energy back down. I've already seen it a few times in my limited clubbing experience, I've noticed the crowd start to go crazy and really move because when a bit of trance gets going, then house kicks back in and the crowd dies. It happened last night. For those few tracks in the middle of Filo and Peri, the front of the DJ booth completely cleared, and the crowd had stopped moving. Then the melodies came back (although it wasn't quite trance I don't think, or maybe it was, but it seemed a different style, although it was still synth, so still sexy), and the people that had left the area all came back and the front of the DJ booth was busy again. I turned to look at the crowd, and they were all back to groovin with the music. Call me crazy, but it didn't look like people really felt like house music. I think F&P even noticed that, and I think that's why they went back to playing tracks with synth (i'd call it trance, but it seemed a different style, was that maybe techno?) for the rest of their set.
Maybe I'm just talking outa my ass, but I'm a fairly observant person, and that observation would have me believing that house is not a good genre to throw into the middle of a night of trance. Beginning and/or end = yay. Middle of tunes and melodies = nay. At least at Viva.

Maybe you brought tunes back later on. Maybe I wasn't patient enough. But when it seemed like the trance had ended(or more specifically, the synth, the tunes, the melodies), I called it a night. I didn't mean for it to look like a "I left because Mark O screwed up" type of comment if that's how you took it. I just don't like house after trance and tunes.

I also figured since Key was starting the night with trance, that meant it was an entire night of Trance.

Yes the light show in Viva is great. I'm usually stoned when I arrive, so it's great start to my night to just sit back and let the lights trip me out :) Thanks Jay. I actually prefer Viva to the Guv. More space to move, darker, great light show, friendlier staff and bouncers, hot asian chicks, skilled glow-stickers = umf.

LOL better be careful, a debate may break out LOL

Actually i rarely talk politics in person unless someone else brings it up or that person is a close friend and we usually talk about everything under the sun anyways.

I just post lots of here to get the "average joe" feedback on whats going on in the world.

Spam: i personally cant stand a whole night or even a whole set of the same music. If a DJ steps up and plays nothing but vocal house all night, or synthy trance, or techno i want to shoot myself. The best DJs mix it up. OK maybe some people dont like the exact genre being played at that moment but thats the time for them to get a drink or talk to the hot girl they have been eyeing all night. If you cane nothing but synthy trance all night arent people going to burn out that much faster? I know i would. This is why my favourite DJs are guys like Danny Tenaglia Danny Howells, Mark Oliver, Carl Cox, etc etc because you are always getting fresh and new music no matter the genre. These guys dont just stick to one format, they program the night with ups and downs to keep the crowd interested longer. After an hour of AVB or RANK 1 for example i hear myself saying "play some ing techno or SOMETHING because i cant take the same sounding break and build up tune all night."

Filo and Peri and Mark did a great job of mixing it up on Friday and any other good DJ out there would do the same.

That's fine, I like variety too, but I like variety that doesn't ruin the flow of the night. And when house kicks in in the middle of a night of trance, it kills me. Beginning and End is the right time for House in my books, and when the synth is over, it's time for me to go home if I'm not socializing. Mark O closes the night at Viva, it makes sense that he'd close off with House. But I'm not going to stick around to hear it, by that time I'm tired, and there's no point in me burning out any more before I need to drive home.
