That's fine, I like variety too, but I like variety that doesn't ruin the flow of the night. And when house kicks in in the middle of a night of trance, it kills me. Beginning and End is the right time for House in my books, and when the synth is over, it's time for me to go home if I'm not socializing. Mark O closes the night at Viva, it makes sense that he'd close off with House. But I'm not going to stick around to hear it, by that time I'm tired, and there's no point in me burning out any more before I need to drive home. |
I pretty much agree with ya here dude.I was anticipating Trance all nite when I walked in.I guess it comes down to my tastes compared to others...I am a severe Trance head at heart;) |

Good news for VIVA and the VIVA massive:D Filo and Peri play good and hard enough stuff for me to be happy and they seemed like pretty cool guys as well.Their version of Prodigy's "Voodoo People" (unless it was "One Love"lol)was really good.
The "Silent night" song was cracking me up BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
As for the whole house and trance stuff I am with Spam and RobbyG on this one and think that some good and hard house would be better done at the beginning of the night with harder trance coming as the night goes on preferably starting up around 1 am and getting harder though out:D I like it when people are sitting around and chilling because of tired feet and all and then some good and hard trance comes on that is so good that they forget that they are tired and jump right back up and start going crazy:gsmile: :D |

Its amazing how hard headed trance fans are. Youd never hear a hip hop fan go "aaaw faak why they hell are they playing reggae now?"
You guys like to lambaste hip hop and pop fans but i find that many trance fans are even worse with their intolerance of other music. I like all music (particularly electronic however) but even in the realm of electronic id be completely happy to hear a night of house, breaks, techno, trance all rolled into one. Good tunes no matter what category they fit into are good tunes. A real music lover can appreciate good music no matter what the genre. And in the big spectrum of things, electronic music all pretty much sounds the same to the outside listener anyways. |

Dude if you saw my record collection then you'd see how wide range my taste in music is.Its just that I was in the mood for Trance especially when I walked in the club at 12:30pm and THATS what was coming out of those awesome speakers. Its proly the 1st time I've gone to a party/club where the genre totally changed in one room throughout the course of the evening (At least as far as I can remember anyway:( ). |

Not me.. and the genre didnt "completely change"
Completely changing is going from trance to hip hop. I think the way the night went was pretty good until someone in the back turned on the house lights a bit early.
I found the 15 mins of house (we are talking about 15 mins here folks) a relief from the banging trance that was pretty constant all night. It made me appreciate the harder stuff that came later on instead of what could have become a constant drone of noise. |

And just think, we coulda had a couple of hours of house if they opened the night with it like I'm a fan of. And I agree, those 3 tracks in the middle of Filo and Peri were a great rest, and I still even liked the music, even if I didn't feel like dancing to it. BUT, that DID ruin the flow a bit, if they had finished up the synth first, then switched to house to end their set, I'd have enjoyed the set that much more.
None of us are demanding trance all night long (although I'm sure we'd all LOVE it). We've said that we were under the impression it would be trance all night, because the opener was playing trance (so obviously, being the pure trance-heads that we are, we got excited). And when it turned out we were wrong, naturally, we'd be a little dissapointed. Then I suggested that rather than play house when they did (because it's so much softer than trance and other synth tracks, mainly due to it's own lack of synth), that they open (and close, in my opinion) the night with house, rather than drop it in the middle of some hard-hitting trance and other synth tracks.
The Hip-Hop/Reggae argument is a little weak I think, because one isn't signifigantly harder than the other, just a different style. Kinda like Techno/Trance, they're both hard enough that even though the style changes, the flow isn't interrupted. Whereas House is signifigantly lighter than trance, and CAN ruin the feeling of a smooth set that flows from start to finish. So no, I'm not going to be overly impressed when a night goes trance/house/trance... hard/soft/hard no, when the night goes like that, suddenly it feels like I've hit a traffic jam in the middle of the journey that is a night of EDM.
All I'm saying that when there's trance in the lineup, it belongs in the middle, during the peak of the set... a perfect example of a good night with variety would be the Paul Oakenfold party at the Guv. Mark O and Liquid Todd opened with house. Then Oaky killed us all, and Mark brought everyone back to earth with a variety-filled set to close off the night. |

Thats probably what hip hop fans would say about house and trance. To them its all beats. |

Im quite happy that F n P might have residency at Viva because honestly of all the guests they have brought there in my memory, they were the best ones and only ones who fit the night. Viva is more than just a marathon trance club. F N P did a good job at keeping the night consistant to what Mark plays and even played a lot of the same tunes that Mark plays weekly. They mixed it up quite well too.
They should forget the guests, give F N P their residency (im thinking it must be monthly or bimonthly?) and keep mark there with an opener every other time. Most guests at viva usually flop because its a very very picky crowd. |

I actually like hip hop and reggae... and they flow together nicely. House and Trance don't work together so well, they don't flow both ways. Because house sounds like an intro to a trance song, so once you've been listening to trance all night, house sounds like nothing more than an endless intro. |

it depends on the kind of trance and the kind of house.
I thought it went quite well on friday myself. |

So did I, I had a great time. And you're right, it depends on the type of house/trance. But in general, house is slower, and softer. And Trance is faster and harder. So House should be a build-up to trance. You mentioned acid-house, doesn't that have synth in it?
House and trance to me are like pop and euro. Sure you can dance to both... but they don't mix well. It's like Linkin Park and The Killers being in the same room, and trying to mix them... there'd be no flow, even though yes, they're both rock, and yes, they're both great music (to some, maybe not, but you get the point). The night would be MUCH better if The Killers opened, and then LP came on. To me, it's the same thing as house and trance. |
