Ok.. I've been thinking so much about it lately...
I dont know if it is just me but I dont understand why DJs are starting to use more CD equipments then regular vinyl turntables on live sets...
I 've also noticed a lot more mistakes coming from using the CDs...
so i wanted to know how do they do it...
because i just saw this guy trying to spin on halloween./. and he was horrible... when he was trying to mix the other song into the song he was playing it sounded like he just switched cds... I could spin better than he could.. then again he isnt anyone famous.. but still.. what do you guys think about it.. and which is better for yall??

doesn't matter for me. CD Mixing is definently going to be cheaper. Get a CD Mixer for $400. just burn 10 Original mixes on a CD-R, 10 on another, and your set for a whole night for just $2.
I definently think beatmatching is the most ESSENTIAL part of a set. not the equipment or the brands or the music; blending and mixing are just what makes a nite memorable. Being able to put two songs so seamlessly together, ahhhhh, can be achieved on either decks. |

hey dj slain..I can understand what your point is
my opinion is, I like Vinyls better,I know that using CDs will eventually become cheaper but Vinyls to me is what makes a Dj a real DJ, choosing to use other equipments changes that whole concept of a djs work, it makes the work easier, so in 5 years we are gonna have millions of people who think they can spin using these cheap equipments that are easier and to me the music is going to die, because we are not going to have anymore Mauro picotto.. or Marco V... or...Johan Gielen..or PVD out there anymore...
what we are going to have is a bunch of SONIQUEs..eifeel65s who are produced in studio before they come out ...
and I dont think it is right, it breaks the history behind a dj''s job... but this is just my opinion,

wOW, that was a great opinion Urdream grl
Well I believe that vinyls are better too,
of course Cds could be better and cheaper, it is also faster, but I dont like to use them when Im out there spinning for a lot of people, it loses that certain touch, and I dont know how other djs can actually do that, I mean like you said,
mauro picotto, marco v, pvd, look at them for an example, those guys have been in the business for ages, dont you think they should be the ones to change the history of a DJ?
they know better not to do that, the djs that are doing that, are the newbies suckers who can't spin first of all and the ones who dont give a dawm about their job, its cool to play around in your room and all , but when you are out there, you gotta show what you got, and when you are using vinyls, you can show what you are about.
nice thread BTW :) |

I would go for vinyl any day :)
it's kinda hard to explain why but it feels better, CD's have their place of course, kinda hard to play a vinyl in a car lol but mixing CD's at a gig, nahhhh.
Let's put it this way, anyone at home with a bit of time and practice can make pretty good mixes using something like Traktor. Traktor has a record function on it so u can record your mixes, so u make your mix in tractor and burn an audio cd of it, one ready made mix, burn a few of those and u got enough for a night, just needing to mix the cd's together at the right points, but how boring would that be, i like to chop and change what i play, DJ's read the crowd, it's part of the magic, they start off the night with a basic set in mind, but they read the crowd and change it accordingly.
CD decks are pretty good these days giving u practicly every function you can do with turntables, and they also have their place, but when it comes down to it, it just feels better knowing that DJ in front of you is useing Vinyl.
Peace :)

The problem with CD Dj'ing is that its hard as hell to be unique. With vinyl, you can get those white and obscure labels and obtain a truly underground sound if you dig deep enough and turnover the right rocks.
The mixing part itself is not that much different from each other. You can correct any mistakes during a mix with just the pitch control, and infact, increasing/decreasing the pitch on a CD deck doesn't affect the key, as a vinyl deck would.
I, however, happen to be in love with vinyl. Its almost like a cult, going to the record store, meeting people, discussing tunes, coming home lugging your purchases over your back (hehe...any females care to give me a massage? jk). Plus, I could never be in a club exclusively with CD's. I'd just feel like a dork having little tiny plastic things as the source of my sound...I love the big 12" vinyl. |

well, DJ's spin Vinyl....so when they start playing cd's they wont be spinning anymore and it will become very unprofessional imo...a real dj is a dj who spins vinyl, beatmatches etc!!!! not play cd's at a party:mad:

I agree. But one negative point is that not every track is available on Vinyl, for example the great "Many Miles To Soon" promo from Rank 1. Compare it to the original mix of Such Is Life, I think many DJ would prefer to spin that track, but where to get such vinyl? Therefore one point for the CDs. |

A dj who spins cause he loves it spins Vinyls because
you become one with the music. When you buy a vinyl you know
you want that tune really bad and think it will work on the
dancefloors.
A dj who spins cd´s often does it because its cool to be a dj
you burn som cd´s with mainstream music and do some ty
beatmatching at a local club
My point is if you really love to spin you will
spend extra dollars on equip and records

Hey Dream Girl,
first you say:"I 've also noticed a lot more mistakes coming from using the CDs... "
and then: "I know that using CDs will eventually become cheaper but Vinyls to me is what makes a Dj a real DJ, choosing to use other equipments changes that whole concept of a djs work, it makes the work easier"
what is it now?
But anyway, I think some people misunderstand the use of CDs. I don't think we should talk about a "DJ" putting on a complete Mix-CD and then making one transition after 75 min. That's not going to happen. But instead you have single tracks on your CD and when you use that, there still is the need to beatmatch, find a good cue-point, know how the other track is going to end and so on...
It's NOT easier then vinyl mixing IMO. And I admit that I use both Vinyl and CDs almost EVERY time I spin nowadays....same with many BIG DJS. There even was a thread about big DJs using CDs in the DJ Zone. When I spin I use maybe 85% vinyl and 15% CDs and there is a good reason for that...I can get MORE TRACKS. It's just not possible to buy every vinyl you like and some of them you can't get at all.
Last Saturday I played "Svenson & Gielen - Twisted" from CD and 3 (!) other DJs who where spinning that nite came up and asked what it was (including Miss Angee).
So I use both and will continue to do so. And man DO I LOVE MY VINYL:D! |

you dont know how right you are man!!!
here in israel.. its hard for djz to spin vinyls.. cause there are hardly any stores here and its very very expensive.. so djz spin with cds most of the time, i have to say its not easier then vinyls.. like dj dawn said you still have to find a good cue point, you stil have to pitch the tracks so they would match perfectly, and thats not easy to do, most djz in here use the pioneer cdj100 cause they absolutly rule!.. they have the jog wheel and some effects to them.. and also have the pitch, djz who only use cd players totally suck  , and you could think why.. no pitch, the mixes totally suck, yestarday i went to a party where some dude was spining.. ing horrible mixes!, i almost killed him, he played brooklyn bounce - born to bounce, cosmic gate - melt to the ocean, safri duo - played a live.. lets just call it in one word, COMMERCIAL!
so back to my point, i prefer djz spining with vinyls, but its not that much harder then cdz.. |
