Oh they would definately know where they "came from". But they would also damn well know where and who they are. And if i moved to france and had kids and raised them there id smack them if i ever saw them waving a Canadian flag during a Canada vs France soccer game for example. Or if they were ever running around Paris with a Canadian flag on their car. That would be pretty dumb.
Not to mention, the french would tolerate that crap for maybe 10 seconds at most before they took care of that problem for me.
I think in just about any other country you'd almost be ashamed if you tried to claim some other nationality than your own. |

i definately agree... had i been an immigrant back in the 17th century i woulda smacked my kids upside the head everytime they started speaking English around the other Iroquois and Huron children ..

well, i do agree that you should respect the country that you live in, but i dont see why it would be wrong to "maintain" your herritage.
For example, i dont see anything wrong with cheering on the "wrong" country in a soccergame. I know many people in sweden, that are as swedish as you can be (3000 years or so i guess ;)), that still dont cheer for sweden in the soccer world cup... are they disrespectful to their country? or when i get back to sweden, i will probably cheer for canada in some sports, such as hockey, does that make me a bad swedish citizen?
no offence, but i think that perhaps the greatest thing about canada is how many different cultures live here, and how you can be in one city and walk from one culture to another in no time at all.
really why does it matter if they say they are irish, or dutch or serbian or iranian or canadian or whatever, they still can be a bad or a good citizen... |

Its not so much cheering for other countries. It's claiming to be another heritage even though you arent. Would you ever go back to Sweden and claim to be Canadian because you lived here and learned the language? Why not? You qualify way more to be Canadian based on the same critria that others use to claim some other form of heritage. At least you've actually been and lived here!
Don't deny where the family comes from but more importantly do not deny who YOU are and where you are now.
My heart and soul are Canadian because i grew up here and any opportunity provided to me is because of here. NOT holland, england, scotland, france and where ever else someone in my family in the past happened to live. |

heh ok France was bad example, even though you'd see Algerian and other Africans flags in France...

that's because Canadians are the nicest ;) and other countries don't have as many immigrants as in big Canadian cities. I am sure you wont see this flag waving stuff in smaller Canadian cities with Anglo majority (just for the record I am not defending the flag waving e. I have never done this before..)
and Diginut I think you are being alittle hypocritical as you claimed to be a "moderate Zionist" before, no? :D |

nicest? More likely we are pushovers. And i dont think youd see the same crap as pervasive in Australia either. You have some immigrant minorities waving their flags with the big difference that THEY ARE ACTUALLY FROM THERE!!!
Im not saying that immigrants claiming another heritage is a problem. It's their kids who are fully born and raised here thats ridiculous. |
