funny thing is that whenever i meet TAs in person the reaction is always positive.
Im glad to see that the people i have met so far are mature enough to see what discussion on here for what it actually is. |

I agree. This is completely disgusting. I WILL NEVER refer to my WIFE as my "spouse". She's my WIFE.
This is a complete disgrace. |

Yes, this is pretty bad.. To be honest, I thought it was some bad joke it first.
I have nothing against gay marriage.. But I'm just curious what's next ? Marriage between 3 people ? Is that possible ? |

From the actual Ontario court decision:
[115]b: "Secondly, the Court should consider the type of remedy which is appropriate – severance, reading in, or striking down..."
So yes, a court CAN indeed read something in. Whenever a statute is broadly interpreted, that's exactly what is happening.... and that is by no means unconstitutional. It's the court's role to interpret statutes within the context of the Charter and broaden interpretations as necessary to ensure equality. |
Nonsense. Look at the Constitution Act, 1982:
52. (1) The Constitution of Canada is the supreme law of Canada, and any law that is inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution is, to the extent of the inconsistency, of no force or effect.
i.e. struck down
(3) Amendments to the Constitution of Canada shall be made only in accordance with the authority contained in the Constitution of Canada.
i.e. a court cannot amend the constitution to get rid of heteroexual marraige, only Parliament can through the procedures laid out therein. No reading-in / legislating from the bench! |

When our PM makes an ass of himself by refusing to support the BMD plan, he did the right thing because he listened to the "democratic majority". But when 75% of the country likes marriage just the way it is, there's no need for the government to consult us when they feel like changing it.
When the USA takes action against violent dictators they are acting "unilaterally" and "imposing their beliefs" on the rest of the world. But when our government pushes ahead with this garbage legislation despite protests and petitions from millions of people countrywide and strong admonitions from people like the Pope who we claim to respect, we just know BETTER than they do.
When the stupid Americans come up with dumbass names like Freedom Fries, we're all over them. But when it's written into law that we're no longer allowed to use the terms "husband" and "wife", that's okay.
We laugh and laugh and laugh at all the frivolous multimillion dollar lawsuits in other countries. But when CEOs have to screw their companies over because some idiot judge told them that there aren't enough black people at the company, they did the right thing. And when students at a university try to start a "white" scholarship, they get their funds from their OWN POCKETS taken away from them, suspended or expelled, and almost end up in jail, and we all say, oh, the university did the RIGHT THING.
We bitch and moan for hours on end about child labour or unsafe working conditions and then spend billions of dollars nationally each year supporting the companies and industries that do this. And then rape their exports with ridiculous duty charges so they have to cut even MORE corners.
And we whine non-stop about how Toronto is a world-class city and should be treated that way by the rest of the world, then proceed to tax the out of everyone who lives here, cutting away at all our infrastructure money, and give it all to some jobless fishermen on the East Coast.
What happened to us? What happened to this country? This isn't what I remember from the 1980s that I grew up in. People used to have REAL values and ethics, values like hard work and education and personal responsibility and personal pride, not these bull pseudo-values like white male guilt and "levelling the playing field". All Canadians want to do anymore is preach from our moral pedestal while blaming someone else for all the world's problems.
Well I'm sick of it. You've got a problem with me and my beliefs? Fine. you. all of you. me for standing up for what I believe in against a bunch of liberal airheads. Maybe it's high time some of you learned that we don't even CARE what you believe let alone want to impose OUR beliefs, we're just sick and tired of people like YOU constantly telling US what to believe in by telling us what we're allowed to say and what we aren't. We're supposed to have FREEDOM OF SPEECH! |

Again... refer to your wife however you want... contrary to the title of this thread, it is NOT illegal and you will not be thrown in the slammer or fined because you choose to do so.
All that is taking place is from a GOVERNMENT point of view, broader all-encompassing terms are being used in order to simplify laws so that we don't have to have two sets of them which both accomplish the same thing.
Is it any more disgraceful than back in the late 20s when the term "person" was redefined / "read-in" to include both males and females? At the time it was certainly a well held belief that it only referred to males... |

the sad part is that those who push political correctness try to make us look like the bad guys.
I dont know many people who are racist or homophobe or against equality at all. Actually in my lifetime i can name people who meet one of those criteria on one hand.
But most DO object to imposing politically correct bull on others. Such as not allowing christmas celebrations at schools or changing language to suit some political agenda.
Im all for gay marriage. But again i reitterate this: How can gays get mad at those who are upset about the use of the word "marriage" in same sex unions but then turn around and demand that the words "husband" and "wife" be stricken?
husband and wife are what marriages are about. If you don't want to be called husband and husband or wife and wife then dont get married!
My tolerence can only go so far!! |

but the difference is that the word was not changed. They didnt change the word person to "carbon based life form" for example. They just made sure that women were included in the term. |
