i had my sights set on a MIDI keyboard, Reason 2.5 and Rewire it with Cubase.

That's what I do and it's working fine for me along with a couple analogue hardware synths that I record into Cubase (oh, and Rebirth too!).

I don't see any real problems with Reason, nor do I hear anything wrong with it. Then again I program every synth sound from scratch (ie the default sound when you create a Malstrom or Subtractor), so I get what I want out of it. I can see people having problems if they're relying on presets, as they all pretty much blow chunks...

Thanks for your post!

yeah i dont think i can afford any hardware inputs atm but soon when i finish year12.

by programing a synth, do you mean that you use the default sound and start making adjustments to what you want out of that sound, or do have some good programing skills to reproduce your own default sound like Malstrom or Subtractor?
yes i see no problem with reason in the demo so im going to get it soon! and also i think most of the time you get what you pay for?

I use the default sound that reason uses, which is a 1 oscillator patch with a simple tone and basic envelope settings and the filter wide open. I start making modifications from there.

I've been dinking around with various analogue synths for over a decade and have gotten to the point where I can imagine a sound I want in my head and can program that sound fairly quickly because I understand what each and every setting on my synths are supposed to do.

It's a little bit more complicated in Reason because of a number of extra paramaters and the backside mod routings open up a BILLION different possibilities, so it takes a litle bit longer... though sometimes some "accidents" happen that take me in a whole new direction with a sound that I hadn't thought of before!
RIPassion
I love those accidents :)

now does that noob set up seem ok, cause throughout the threads most have been bagging the out of it really. i thought reason was a great program but now i have no confidence in buying it now.

what shall i do?
is there other great VSTI out there like reason, or shall i buy a whole heap of separate VSTI'S. But really it would be cost effective buying reason as it has the whole studio setup with synths and drums.
i am very new to production, so i am trying to learn as much pros and cons when using software and hardware and also have just been stuffing around to get used to the programs to see how they work (DEMOS).

THANKS :)

cakewalk project 5 v2

man decisions, decisions!

so from what it seems it is very much like REASON.

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK OF PROJECT 5 FROM CAKEWALK!

it must be great to elabarate on the sound you want to create and also you know how to produce the sound.

Awesome mate! :gsmile: thanks for your wise comments!

man i had a quick look and looks promising from the details! and layout nice!
how do you think cakewalk are compared to propellerhead software!

like there all good but does anyone use cakewalk software and also for example project 5.
mzvirbulis
although i already have CUBASE SX!
it states on the site!:
Open Host Environment

Ultimate synth host with open support for VST and DirectX instruments and effects
ReWire™ host and client for integrating with Reason™, SONAR™, Pro Tools™, etc.
Support for industry standard, and proprietary sample formats: ACID WAV, AIF, Akai S5000/6000, Kurzweil, LM4, Ogg Vorbis, Sound Fonts 2, SFZ, WAV

well it says synth host rewire with reason, so it is a sequencer also.
this takes the point of me having cubase.
or can i use project 5 with cubase, although then im better off using reason 2.5 with cubase?
does these instruments of P5 compare to reasons because reason is a dedicated vsti where as P5 is all in 1.

im not sure about the whole studio in one.

im very sceptical atm because i have never used VSTI'S much and really dont want to waste money on something im not happy with?
also im not sure what i would rather REASON or PROJECT 5

mzvirbulis
mmmmm gapless AUDIO ENGINE thats handy? good for your creativity!
nothing will block your path, although wouldnt it depend on your soundcard.
i have a creative eXtigy external sound card it really good.

what is latency?
is it the response time when you trigger a MIDI response from a keyboard etc.?
mzvirbulis
ha i found this,

Top ten Reasons to chooses P5V2 over Reason

#10>VST & DXi

#9>Multi-track recording

#8>Live performance multipad playback (like ableton)

#7>Full Acid support: real time multi-slice editing of pitch, pan, & gain for all imported and recorded audio .

#6> Better Synths:

PSYN is a better subtractive synth than Subtractor (4 oscillators vs 2)

And a new wavetable multi-sampling synthesizer by RGC audio (makers of amazing z3ta+ << way better than maelstrom)

#5>1/2 the price

#4>Reasons' new feature "the Combinator" was built into P5 from V1

#3>If you own P5 you can get Sonar for 1/2 price(at least), propellerhead doesn't offer a studio sequencer.

#2> Automation libraries that allow you to drag and drop automation clips onto your midi clips (very fast!)

#1> You don't have to be a sucker/sheep that pays $200 for an upgrade of two features:

one of which was already in P5,

and the other that is practically useless because anyone who masters Reason tracks usually re-wires it into Nuendo, Cubase, Logic, or Sonar.
