And with respect to brain-washing, yes, most religions perpetuate themselves by indoctrination. Why are the children of Catholics more likely to be Catholic than the children of Shintos or Hindus? The minds of children are much, much, much more easy to convince of beliefs founded upon faulty logic than adults are. |
its a psychologically known fact that human nature involves passing on customs, traits and traditions on to offsprings as a way of life to withold and use for guidance until of a right age to make their own choices when on their own.
the ur saying about shintos and hindus not passing on their religion is total BS. if that was the case, hinduisnm wouldnt be in existence till today despite it being way older than the catholic faith which is comparatively new.... |

You misunderstood... I mean that the children of Shintos and Hindus are not CATHOLIC!
Edit: I'll clarify by adding the following:
The argument I'm trying to make is that people tend to follow their own kind. If your parents are Hindu, then it's more likely that you will be Hindu than be Catholic, because of the beliefs that your parents indoctrinated you with. You claim that parents give their children these beliefs to guide them before they can make their own decisions, but most parents don't want their children to ever make a decision to change from the religion they were brought up with. I think the intent of most parents who are raising their children Hindu is that the child will be a Hindu forever.
To me, that is taking advantage of the child's immaturity because it is so much harder for them to change their beliefs later in life. |

My "faith" is common sense, education and logic.
You won't ever find me sitting there "accepting" anything because "God made it that way"
"Why is the Sky Blue? Cause God made it that way and it's not for us to question God"
To me...that is accepting being passive and not growing on your own two feet and being responsible.I question everything...and I always will.
Organiazed religion is just a way to cop out of understanding and accepting ignorance and fear. I'll pass on that thank you very much.
I will be asking the question "Why" till the day I kick the bucket (and probably even that won't get me to shut up :D lol)
+1 for the Atheist list |
i like the way u think man! cheers mate!! :gsmile: |

ya I know. well imo, alot of relgion these days is modified for personal interest. I am not that religious really (well I am in concept), but I'd probably be labeled as sinner by the hardcore followers |
see and thats also whut i dont like... the way u are often judge, tho i dont mean to imply all religious ppl do this...
its like, you KNOW u believe in god, u just feel it in ur soul or whutever, but if u dont conform to some of the hardcore traditional ways of ur elders for example, ur considered a sinner or obviously u dont believe in god properly or some other bs...
i mean, i know alot of ppl that believe but dont follow the bible to a tee bc even they say alot of it is just "guidance" and not hardcore steadfast static rules... and alot of those guidances were more applicable years ago when the bible was originally written...different times |

I say "oh my god" several times a day. It is embedded in my vocabulary, and I just like saying it. I also say Armin is god. Both of these sayings are in different context to the actual "God" that so many people are brainwashed into believing in !!
I am thankful that somone created this big fat magical story they call The Bible, because it has left us with some seriously amazing art and architecture !! It also gives us good frday off so we can party at Decadence every year. :D |
Hehehehe, i need to get to know you better girl :p... i find your way of thinking refreshing and very much like my own! cheers to you PartEgurl
esp. ur comment about when u drop the "god" word... i find many religious sayings very colourfull and love dropping them
i say "for the love of jesus" or "whut in the name allah" , etc. etc. very frequently... just sounds cool and is very interesting speak! :D |

| Like DJ Elyot said, I think I'm mostly agnostic, just because its difficult to forget everything that you've been brought up with. It confusing sometimes, because you feel like you should think about a certain issue one way and you are on the opposite end of the spectrum... like with the whole gay marriage thing. Also, with the Pope dying this afternoon, i know i'm suppost to feel some emotion for it... but, honestly, I really don't. It's weird. Anyway, i'm not an atheist because basicly, i need an adjustment phase. At this point in my life, I have learned to logically think though my beliefs not just take them for granted because that's what someone told me when I wasn't old enough to understand what logic was. So, yeah, add me to the list. |

I love how all these Athiests here act like any who believes in a higher power is automatically labelled an ignorant, naive, brain-washed and simple-minded individuals  What a ing joke!
I'm agnostic, but please don't add me to the list. I'd rather be caught with my hand in my pants than be associated with such arrogance |
No worries, ill leave ya off it mate! cheers |

It's all about tolerance, man. It's not as if people can't be friends if they have different beliefs. How many conservatives do you know with liberal friends, and vice versa? They probably think that people of different political opinions are stupid, ignorant, brain-washed, etc, but it doesn't mean they have less respect or don't want to be friends.
Kids are gullible... that's why you can convince them of the existance of Santa Claus. When you try to convince them of the existance of God, they're more likely to believe you than adults are, and are more likely to adopt those same beliefs and carry them into adulthood. Of course, most religious families indoctrinate their children into believing in God much more deeply than they do about Santa Claus, so the belief is harder to dispel. Santa Claus gets focused on once per year; many religious parents force their kids to pray every day and send them to some kind of service once a week, so they're constantly exposed to it. It's just very difficult for people to abandon those kind of beliefs when they're so deeply ingrained in their lives.
There are very few people who grow up as Atheists and become religious later in life. A far greater number of people grow up in a religious home and decide to become Atheist or Agnostic later in life. |
While I can't really argue with any of your points cause you're right on most of them, I've noticed that many, many Athiests have a very elitist attitude. Believe what you want, I say, but please don't insult me or my beliefs in the process. And that goes for anyone. Christian, Athiest, Muslim, etc.
Comparing this to politics though, I dunno about that. My main beef with all these political heads is they're too caught up trying oh so hard to be on ONE side, which I think is bull. Just like Chris Rock said, listen to the topic at hand, and THEN form your own opinion about it. |

Its oftentimes true, i have noticed this before w/ a few peps, not that it bothers me atall, i find it reassuring to find ppl who are vocal about their beliefs since i dont know that many myself, most my friends hold some kinda religion, tho they are extraordinarily passive followers. But even so, its so great to be around ppl once in a while that share whut u believe so intensely! |
