Believe what you want, I say, but please don't insult me or my beliefs in the process. And that goes for anyone. Christian, Athiest, Muslim, etc.

Comparing this to politics though, I dunno about that. My main beef with all these political heads is they're too caught up trying oh so hard to be on ONE side, which I think is bull. Just like Chris Rock said, listen to the topic at hand, and THEN form your own opinion about it.

I do agree with you that some uneducated atheists are a bit arrogant... but I have lots of religious friends... jews, bahai, muslim, christians, buddhist, etc. It doesn't bug me one bit. I do have my opinions, and I have lots of knowledge and arguments to back them up, but I don't hate on other people because of them. Leave my Atheism alone and I'll leave their Theism alone.

fair enough, but i know of MANY people that converted from Hinduism, Buddism and even Islam, to the Catholic faith personally.

yes their parents were uber pissed about it because religion in a family tree is one of the common factors that binds the generations together.

for example, hindus celebrate Diwali (festival of lights) while christians dont.

Catholics celebrate christmas while muslims dont.

now should there be 2 members of the family, practicing 2 different faiths, there would be no reason for each one to celebrate the other's religion-inclined day(yea i couldnt think of a word to use).

so all im saying is, yes there is a need for parents to pass on faith.

It confusing sometimes, because you feel like you should think about a certain issue one way and you are on the opposite end of the spectrum... like with the whole gay marriage thing.

What do you mean by that?

Do you mean like...you know that you should believe in one thing, but find yourself believing in another?

To me, that is taking advantage of the child's immaturity because it is so much harder for them to change their beliefs later in life.

It's amazing how many ppl i've encountered and they have no reasoning in their beliefs. If you asked them why they believe in such a thing, they would say that that's what their religion tells them. But they first came about the religion from parents... it's just a set of beliefs that keeps getting passed down from one generation to the next, and maybe at first the teachings were relevant, but now none it makes sense and that's why more people are choosing to "become" atheist.

true true, my buddy's wife Missy gets VERY VERY upset w/ me when i say "jesus christ" or "for the love of christ" or anything. even something as small as "damn"... or "oh hell"

which i find VERY strange and VERY irritating to avoid (since i of course try not to offend her... it just causes more problems with hanging out w/ my best friend if im agitating his wife inadvertintly)

i mean, my parents are believers (well my dad believes but thinks the bible's all BS, a fairy tale someone wrote, he told me) but i mean ive always said "jesus" or "damn" or "christ", whutever, and never taken for it... they really dont care... and IMO exactly, whuts the big deal (obviously thats just my opinion tho)

but if i were to drop something on my foot or break something and i said "" or "" around my parents, they course would get VERY upset and tell me not to swear, yada yada yada... so its very hard and strange for me to activley avoid around Missy saying such religious expressions which i use so prolifically in my everyday speech :(

the main reason for religion is to set guidlines for life and to believe in life after death.

i have questioned my faith several times myself but i still go to church every sunday, as thats the only time i actually find myself praying. reason why i go to church despite my questioning of faith? cos religion is based on belief and if u belive, u belong.

what i would really like ot know is....all of u who "cherish" atheism and condemn theist, waht exactly do u find ur purpose in life to be?? just a simple quetion....to elaborate on it, what exactly are u living for?

I was a catholic, and in that church, it is against the belief system to support homosexual marriages. But i'm personally a liberal person, and I believe that if two people are in love and they want to spend the rest of their lives together, then there should be nothing stoping them from getting married. Another example of this is the virgin Mary BS... yeah, right! I don't understand how i'm suppost to blindly believe that a virgin gave birth to a child. That's just imposible.

there is no purpose in life. u were born, therefore u exist.

i dont see why ppl NEED a find a purpose in life for life to have meaning. u are alive now, so live ur life as much and as fully as u want, bc when ur dead ur dead and u no longer exist and cannot experice jack.

make of life u what u feel u wanna. i dont belief in any higher purpose to anything and i dont see why that concept is so dismal or downhearting to so many other ppl.

i just enjoy life as it hits me.

EDIT:

Same goes for death. i guess the idea of living on in heaven or being reincarnated or whutever is a very nice way to look at things.. and gives ppl hope and whutever in life.

me, i dont believe in that stuff... once ur dead, ur dead. u nolonger are apart of ANYTHING... but i fall to see whut that scares ppl so much. it dont scare or bother me at all... its just the way it is and i dont see why that should be upsetting... and to worry about it doesnt even really make much sense to me since its not like ull regret it after the fact since ull be dead and hence its a moot point therefore.

dont interpret that as me not caring if i die, id like to of course keep on living and having fun w/ my friends and hearing blissfull music and all the other joys of life... i just meant the prospect of existing no longer once u die is not a terrifying or unsettling concept to me. :thepirate

I'm against gay marriage but it has nothing to do with me being brought up as a catholic. Actually...I'm more against them having kids. Let gays get married for all I care.

Oh, and you're not supposed to take the Bible literally.

marriage is a bonding in faith between a man and a woman. it has been so since the begining of time.

the term marriage is considered sacred to our catholic faith since it is one of the 7 sacraments that are fulfilled during a person's life.

the main reason why catholics dont support gay "marriage" is because homosexuality itself is not accepted by our faith since woman was made to be man's companion for life.

If 2 people of the same sex really want to be together, then why dont they jsut practice common law?? its as good as being married....why get the whole religious ceremony?

anyway...im not getting into taht now as that is a totally different can of worms and ive spoken enough about it in this post

I honestly don't have the sentiment to care about holidays in their holy sense. I give gifts and eat turkey at Christmas, but I don't pray, I don't celebrate Jesus, I don't go to church, and I don't sing Christmas carols. I hung out with my Bahai friend on Yamaha(sp?) and had dinner with him, but I didn't fast or pray or anything.

There's nothing wrong with deviating from tradition. If tradition brings knowledge and fun, then great (like Christmas and Easter... they can be lots of fun without any religious aspects to them), but I'm not going to fast during Ramadan or Lent or something just because tradition dictates that I should, and if my parents or family have a problem with that, then it's their problem.

Take the good; get rid of the bad; and enjoy life. You can always learn something from other cultures.
