sure we are...we're just top of the food chain. You do know that our genetic code is 98% akin to that of chimpanzees right? So they're animals and we're not? |

Obviously something makes us really really... special. It's why we don't quite act like chimpanzees. |

yes...maybe if you read some theories on evolution and the human species, you'd understand why sex is a simple biological function. That said, it's always better when you have feelings for the person, no doubts there. But you DO NOT need to love someone to have sex with them. That's either a religious or personal choice and not the driving reason to have sex. |
Not an opinion i personally accept and follow, but I get your meaning which is quite valid.

That was my whole point about condoms. OBVIOUSLY, ten year olds having sex is a problem. But 14 and up (POST PUBERTY of course)...no, I do not see a problem with that as long as they are EDUCATED in safe sex practices and have been given enough information to make a mature choice. Don't give me any crap about young teens not being able to make those choices either. Kids are a lot smarter than the credit they are given by arrogant people in the media. |
This was basically what I was driving at; kids aren't mature enough and know enough about sex either through lack of parenting and/or education.
i agree that some kids are really smart, but most are pretty naive and ignorant; too often I see teens acting on impulse without thought. |

that would be intelligence which developed over millions of years. Honestly, people need to READ the evolution theories before commenting on them. Unless you're brainwashed by a crazy religion, it all makes perfect sense and, unlike a certain book, has countless pieces of evidence to back it up. |

The problem with sex education these days is it's not thorough. It's full of holes.
Example. I've taken sex ed classes since grade 4. They were very very very basic back then, but overtime, they got into more details. The classes preached safe sex and looked at STD's, but failed to mention how easy some std's can be caught EVEN WITH A CONDOM.
These FACTS would scare alot of teens away from having sex:
- herpes and genital warts can be passed on even with a condom
- herpes may stay dormant for years before coming out to say hello. if you are very sexually active, you may never know who you got them from
- even unexposed herpes CAN BE passed on during a process called shedding where no sores are exposed but the virus can still work its way over
- genital warts can cause damage to the cervix, perhaps causing cervical cancer and/or difficulty with child birth in the future
- THERE IS NO CURE FOR HERPES
So yeah, you can't even inspect the goods to make sure it's safe. You're really going in blindly. But how did I find this all out? Not sex ed classes. A pamphlet at the doctors office.
I personally get regular STD testing (bloodwork and as gross as this sounds, a swabbing, and no, they don't stick it up your dick), it's free thanks to OHIP, and I get it done whenever I'm at the doctors for whatever reason and feel that it's been too long since i've gotten one. May be a touchy/embarassing subject to bring up to some (especially if your doctor's your family friend) but it's stupid not to.
Another scary thing about some STD's is that when dormant, it's MUCH harder to detect them. You may pass clean yet still be infected.
Scary that ALL teens should know. Oh, and I forget what they are now, but the stats on how many university students and highschool students actually have STD's is shocking too.

ok but who's to say what age people can engage in sex then? Think about it for a second. At around age 13-15, boys start producing sperm and reach puberty. Girls are a little younger...mostly 12-13ish. So if they're phsyically ready to have sex, then how can society demand they refrain until reaching a responsible age in their view, for example 18 or 21 or marriage, etc. I agree some people can do it too young...but I'm not concerned if some kids, at age 12 or 14 or whatever, are experiencing sex. I'm mostly concerned about them receiving the proper information at a suitable age and have that drilled into them every year. It just seems much more important to me to stress that everyone use condoms or birth control rather than stipulating they wait until a certain age. People like George Bush, who support abstinence, just don't have a clue as to what really goes on among the world's youth...or at least he turns a blind eye to look good in front of his morally conservative base. |

-the average length of a chimpanzee penis is 3 inches
-a chimpanzee male can perform sex in six seconds
Still think you're similar to a chimpanzee? :haha:
Any animal can mate... but only humans with the requisite maturity can make love.
While you make some good points on sex ed. and contraception (purely physical aspects of sex), consider this point of view:
| quote: | | a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection. |

Love is what makes us human.
Can a 10 year old fathom what love is? While he or she may be physically capable of having sex, they most certainly aren't mentally/emotionally ready. |

The fact of the matter is, if you were to test most 13-15 year olds on the facts about std's, pregnancy, etc. they'd fail. I think the concern doesn't stem from the actual age, but the percentage of kids that age that are engaging in sex without a matured knowledge of the risks involved.
The beef with the conservative/family values view is that they think that at the ages 13-15 or whatever, the teens "virgin" ears should not be exposed to the "adult" topic of sex. Since sex, and anything sexual is deemed adult (by TV ratings, pornography age restrictions, etc.), absitanance till they're mature enough to learn the facts is their answer. Not teaching them the facts is what I disagree with, because an in the case of sex, an uninformed individual is more likely to seek pleasure over the unknown side of things.
The 2 paragraphs above combined are conditional to eachother. The kids lack knowledge because they are simply told to abstain without enough reason. Together, they make the age figures "shocking" to most.
It's like the war on drugs. Trying to tell kids to stop doing it doesn't work, because they'll discover that it feels good. Providing the full scope of risks allowing them to create their own cost-benefit analysis should be the goal at hand, but the facts should be thorough and true. The question of morality should play no part in sexual education. And besides, the age of experimentation is limited by nature. Teaching all people able to have sex the facts about sex would be the NATURAL thing to do.

I'd love to see somebody prove that a 10 year old cannot love.

you're quoting the Vatican? Man...I hope you realise that whole post was a load of . Again, you should read up on some theories , which again, have tons of proof, that explore the very real possibility that love is merely a biological reaction of very intense attraction. Quoting the Vatican...propaganda at its best. You're hilarious. |

| Karim...I agree with your post. I just think it's much more reasonable to try to get the best information out there (and sex ed is by far not perfect, especially in catholic schools) rather than obsessing and freaking out over the fact that some 14 year olds are having sex. People are always going to be getting it on...so why don't we try to manage the problem and lessen the risk rather than combat the problem with "don't do it" which will never work. This same ideology has been applied in Africa rather than supporting the use of condoms. Now look at the state of that continent in relation to the spread of HIV/AIDS. |
