I learned on an automatic, but 2 years ago when it was time to buy a new car.. I traded mine in for a standard and just basically had to learn myself with maybe all of 3 lessons before picking up my car..
Now I love it.. wouldn't drive any other way (except in traffic) Then it is a bitch!

Driving an automatic isn't driving...it's steering.

Manual all the way ! :)

My car uses Steptronic and also has a sports mode which enables faster gear shifts but is still automatic. I rarely use the feature..personally think it's more of a toy than anything. Ideally for you veteran stick shifters what RPM's should a person switch @ for each of the gears? I can at least learn to listen for the engine changes on this car and then eventually move onto a real stick when I get my next car in a few years.

Also, what does everyone think of SMG? Still fake or cool>?

^^^ its different for every car...

when just cruising you want to shift in the middle of your power band which is generally in the mid to high 3000 rpms

when racing you want to shift so that the resultant rpms will be at the beginning of your power band...

I went manual last year and will never go back. Its cheaper on gas and repairs and murders an automatic in speed. The other bonus is that most other countries have only manual, so all those automatic drivers are screwed when the leave north america!

From the way i look at it, sequential gearboxes are here to stay. They just get better and better, that I may consider one for my next car (And I am an avid stick shift person). Very soon we will have actual F1 seq. gearboxes (one day....).
One technology that is great is Audi's DSG. Extremely well thought!

manual is the way to go....

Agreed. S2000 has high revs - the prelude can go to 90+ in 2nd, 140 3rd, 190 4th, 250@8000rpm in 5th. All depends on how much noise you want to take, lol.

I first practiced on my brothers ty little civic for a few weeks, then when I got my car brand new it was pretty scary. I wasn't comfortable with hills or rush hour traffic for the first couple of months.

I love my 6-speed. The only way to drive.

I like Audi's new dual-clutch on the A3. Might solve my problem of the lady not driving stick (me only driving stick). We'll have to see once I get a chance to test-drive it.

Thats the DSG. I drove it on an A3 in Europe a little while ago, and trust me, the gear shifts are fast and smooth, no need for 'throttle-lift' during gear changes like how you have to do it on the other sequential gearboxes.
