^^ Fuad, you don't have to lift with BMW's SMG or SMG-II. I imagine that SMG-xx (whatever they're calling it this week) you wouldn't have to lift either. True sequentials don't require lifting the throttle - only automatics prentending to be manuals do, eg. Tiptronic, Autostick, etc. do.

Having driven both a TT 3.2 with DSG and an M3 with SMG-II I feel BMW's system to be much smoother. I mean sure, VAG can sure make a great system and all, but the vehicles they mate them to are just so subpar when it comes to longevity compared to BMW. Not to mention I'm a BMW whore.

I'm hoping my next car will be a nice sensible 330i with SMG. The car I learned to tear up in. Can't wait for BMW Driver Training Session 2 this summer, instead of ripping an E46 M3 on backroads I finally get to give it without limits or laws to worry about.

You are correct, there is no need for throttle lift with the SMG's, but to get the perfect shift w/o having that slight lag or jerk, throttle lift solves the problem.
I know exactly what you mean about VAG's capabilities, the gearbox is meant for more powerful cars, but I hear rumours that Porsche plan to bring the DSG to its cars down the road. Now that would be awesome. :eyes:

That would be great, as Tiptronic is seriously an antiquated torque-converter piece of that should never have even been implemented. The GT2 and Carrera GT require such an option, IMHO.

Speaking of Carrera GTs, some dude died in one yesterday at a track day event in the southern USA. Can't remember where, saw it on another forum I post at, a few of the guys knew him personally. They were really, really upset. Thing is, the car was basically completely intact. 150+mph decelleration is enough to rupture most organs in the human body, unfortunately :(

The GT3 and GT3RS (drooooooooooollllllll) should stay stick. Pure road connection. Take away power steering too.

all this talk of stick driving makes me wonder. For those who drive stick, is it bad to down shift as an alternative for braking? (high RPMS to lower) my car is loud when I do it..

Benjamin Miles Keaton. I've actually had the pleasure speaking with him (knew him from 6speedonline.com) on a few occasions, when I had questions about C4S upgrades (he knew his well, was one of the first to supercharge his 996 cab). Top notch guy, and very down to earth. He actually offered me a ride if i ever was in the LA area. According to him, he was the happiest to offer rides to anyone in his CGT. He leaves behind an absolutely gorgeous 8 month old daughter and wife. RIP Ben.

IMHO, engine braking goes hand in hand with conventional braking (I love it). I guess it would not be too good for the engine in the long run (but I may be wrong)

I was just worried about the clutch thats all, do you know much about heel toe technique, is it hard to do?

despite was anyone says, no its not. use it WITH braking to help slow the car faster. its kinda like "engine brakes" in a way. obviously if you shift into a wrong gear and redline it then its bad.

No damage to the clutch for engine braking, just dont 'slip' the clutch. Heel & toe: takes a lot of practice....but once mastered, is the ing ! something like double clutching (which i am still trying to perfect).

I'm not going to say if it damages the engine, as I don't think anybody really knows or has gone into serious depth on the subject. It's fun as hell and I'd continue to do it, but then again, new brakes are how much cheaper than a new clutch? :haha:

my box was MADE for racing, OR, made for driving around a garbage dump where teh car will break down anyway and you can just leave it there ;) haha
