I'm a hundred times more pleased by a DJ who can actually provide a decent build-up in his set, instead of playing some track including some one-minute-long nonsense breakdown-buildup hands-in-the-air time-for-the-god-pose track after the other.
Besides that, all those breakdowns really spoil your trip. |

The whole breakdown....snare roll, bombastic anthem paradigm always reminds me of that one dork you knew back in highschool who had no social skills and no one liked him.
Then one day, in the cafeteria or the halls or a classroom or something, he said something that was just ing AWESOME. The timing, the poise, the manner in which he said that, either a zinger or a snappy comment, just floored everybody. It was brilliant. It was talked about in the school for several days afterward. It had become legend.
And he knew it. And it kind of became like his catchphrase, and he would use it again and again, every day, and every time he said it people would laugh, but each time a little less and less. But after awhile, it got kind of tiring of hearing him say it all the time, and again he went to being a lovable loser no one cared about, only far more pathetic because he wouldn't let go of his 15 minutes of fame, his sudden moment of glory that propelled him to the top of the school's social hierarchy.
Trance is like that guy. It stumbled upon this great novelty gimmick back in 97 that a lot of us said "This is awesome. I love it when the snare roll comes and everyone goes nuts when the Anthem hits. We need more tracks like this X-Cabs - Neuro."
And then in 98, we got our wish. EVERY track had this formula. Raped it to cartoonish extremes. Every song in every set of every DJ the same god damn thing. Drop the beat at the 96th bar, ambient wash for 16, rising anthem, snare roll, crescendo. Yeah, the stuff was that ing predictable. And after a year of this we were like "okaaaay..that was fun the first three thousand times we heard it, but seriously you guys. Stop it. Stop it right now. This breakdown-anthem stuff is getting really ing annoying. Let's get back to some regular trance now."
And yet it wouldn't stop. They kept churning out the schlock. Sure, all the punters and posers loved it, and it became this trendy thing for normal people to enjoy because it was just a funny rap and a choreographed dance routine away from being pop music, and probably because of that, trance became addicted to its own success, and didn't want to go back to being niche music. But it had nothing else going for it, so it didn't want to leave the comfort of this dominating formula. By 99, I had completely pulled myself away from attending any trance parties. The music was just too ing awful.
I figured something so shallow and gimmicky could not possibly last. I'll just sit back and wait til the storm blows over, and come back to the scene when decent stuff starts coming out again. Six years later, I still remain, as ever, in voluntary exile. The only possible explanation for why these snare rolls and anthems are still around is the turnover rate. There are exceptions, but generally people who get into trance rarely stay longer than 9 months. So it's really the newbs who keep all this cheese alive.
Meanwhile, trance keeps clinging to its sordid past like some pathetic, washed up former athlete bragging about how many touchdowns he scored back in highschool (4 in one game!). The only thing more pathetic than that are the people who reminisce with it. |

AMEN to that. And tracks like Deepsky - Cosmic Dancer.
That is real banging trance with all the tough ingredients, 303s and techy sound crafted for the dancefloors.
The irony in Ishkurs post is always how much spitting and cursing he may take he always hit the right spot, and is often very true in his judgment. Only really naive and indoctrinated people wouldn't agree with him. |

I don't think Ishkur would disagree on the fact that Neuro is a great tune. And way before its time (it was released in 1995 and sounds better than most stuff released today) |
